How Tyra Banks Lost 30 Pounds

We all knew this was coming…

Life & Style is running a cover story about Tyra Banks and her recent weight loss. A lot of people are probably rolling their eyes and thinking she is doing this all for publicity.

ls2.jpg

However, I have a theory about the whole Tyra Banks weight phenomenon. A lot of us go through this: we don’t really realize how much weight we’ve gained until suddenly seeing a photo of ourselves. Unfortunately, Tyra saw a very unflattering photo splashed all over the tabloids and internet. She probably suddenly realized that she wasn’t healthy and didn’t look her best. At first she was hurt and angry at all of the tabloids and blogs calling her “fat”, so she started her “So What?” campaign. But at the same time she realized that she really did need to lose weight to get healthier. So she did.

That’s only my personal theory. Of course, I could be wrong. What do you all think?

Anyway, the article talks about how Tyra feels more comfortable at a lower weight (understandable), and when she saw the very unflattering beach photos of herself, she decided it was time to do something. So, she lost 30 pounds and now looks fabulous.

Click here to read the fully scanned story. Note in particular the meal plan at the end of the article, which looks like every other fake celebrity diet we’ve seen in these magazines time and time again!

    First!

Ok, she definitly lost pounds, but the cover-photo looks really fotoshoped. “I feel more comfortable when I´m lighter”. This woman seems not to know what she wants… But you have to say, she is just a beautiful woman.

  2. Hungry & Mean | 25/05/07

I feel for her in a way because I can’t imagine how awful I’d feel to be in the position she was in a few months ago.

However, it is slightly hypocritical to launch her “So What?” campaign and then work hard to lose weight and appear thin again.

  3. Natalie | 25/05/07

Her body looks strange to me. The picture looks very photo-shopped, down to the strangely flat neon green color of her bikini. Her hair also looks odd. Is that a wig? A bad coloring job?

I don’t blame Tyra. I blame the media machine that somehow makes some women all look the same.

It would be nice to see a few dimples or wrinkles or pores on a magazine cover. As tired as this sounds, I find the women the most interesting and endearing when they ignore the flaws and seem happy, rather than when photoshop every women until they look like the same person.

In other words, I think more celebrity women should embrace their age simply because it differentiates them. People have different tastes. Why not have different faces to accommodate everybody? I’m tired of this mass produced example of beauty that all the celebrity women try to emulate and end up looking like a strangely plastic 19 year old girl with nothing memorable about them.

  4. Anonymous Realist | 25/05/07

    How about 30 more?

  5. TN | 25/05/07

“So What!” Its great that Tyra lost the weight and all because its obviously healthier BUT to agree to be a cover story on a tabloid is pretty hypocritical after that big campaign. Way to make a statement Tyra.

  6. lambman | 25/05/07

I still say she gained the weight and is loosing it ONLY for publicity and to endear her to daytime audiences. Daytime TV views can relate to weight loss and gain, but not to supermodel perfection.

Natalie - Tyra’s hair is always a weave, she and Beyonce both favor the lace front wigs…I don’t know what a lace front means either, I just know that’s the kinda B. and Tyra use

  7. Caffeine Freak | 25/05/07

Hm. I’m in agreement with the people who think the photos look altered.

Also, I do think that she needed to lose some weight for the sake of her health, but 30 lbs. so quickly? I’m not sure it’s possible to healthily drop that much in just a couple of months. I mean, it’s not as if she was morbidly obese.

  8. adriana | 25/05/07

    Natalie - Amen sistah!!!

And on the other hand, I understand what Rian is getting at. I’ve done this same thing. You see yourself in the mirror every day and you just look like you. But when you see a pic of yourself, you imagine what you look like to other people. I think it’s only natural that Tyra was rather defensive at first, she’s only human (plus, the media were being a**holes about it). Of course, being healthy always feels better, and usually looks better too.

  9. Jodi | 25/05/07

I big “so what” to Tyra. Feh. I couldn’t care less about her if I tried.

  10. sarah | 25/05/07

i like your theory skinnygirl! it actually makes sense. and she did look reeeally unhealthy before she lost the weight–and before it didnt look like she had ANY muscle tone, like it was all fat

  11. Marianne | 25/05/07

    I have depression.

It started right around Xmas. The reasons are of no interest to this discussion, so I will only tell you that it seriously affected my weight. I am weight-conscious, frugal eater with iron discipline, and since Xmas till mid April, I lost all control of my habits. I quit the gym and laid on the couch day-in, day-out, binging. Eating things I had never even tried before, and in quantities I couldn’t even hold.

I put on about 20 pounds in 3 months. I felt horrible, uncomfortable and ugly, which in turn made me eat more. It was only when I started my psychological treatment that I slowly recovered my will.

I haven’t lost all the weight yet, but I do feel SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE. Like I belong in my body again. Going from lean to heavy in a matter of months is very hard to get used to (hopefully I never will, in fact), it’s like having constant menstrual bloating. So I understand where she’s coming from, and wouldn’t call her a hypocrite. Her message stills stands, bigger girls should not be made to feel ashamed of themselves.

Having said that, she never reached an unhealthy size. Neither did I, and most people tell me that while I saw a whale, they saw a slightly fleshier me. My ex came to visit me when I was at my worst, and patting my shoulder he joked, “There’s still nothing to pinch!” But that’s not how I felt.

I didn’t mean to use this topic to make it about me. All I’m trying to say, is that, by experience, I can understand her reasons, and congratulate her.

As far as the photoshopping is concerned, well, it’s not even the celebs who do that, it’s the magazines.

  12. Lizzie | 25/05/07

Being an attention whore is unattractive no matter what you weigh!

  13. Lucie | 25/05/07

    I don’t think it’s hypocrisy (the so-what-campaign-versus-I-feel-more-comfy-when-I’m-lighter thing).
I wouldn’t appreciate it if everyone was making fun of my putting on weight, even though I would be the most critical one towards myself. It’s more or less the same thing as when you don’t like it when ppl criticizes your family: you are the only one who can criticizes… (dunno if it makes sense).
I think her message was “don’t give a sh*t about what ppl says, if you lose weight, do it for yourself, not for the others”.

  14. karmalife | 25/05/07

I say, more power to her. If it took her being ridiculed to finally take the weight off, then so be it. She looks much better this way. As for her being a hypocrite, I guess her campaign was nothing but a joke and I’m sure a lot of her “followers” are now disappointed. She was obviously just reacting in defense to the pictures of her cellulite ridden ass when she claimed “so what” earlier this year. The truth is, it’s hard for women to accept their bodies, their flaws and the number on the scale. Part of me wishes Tyra could have stuck to her “campaign”, only because she is apparently some type of pseudo role model to younger girls. At the same time, I can’t stand her myself and I think she looks much better (and I’m sure she’s much more comfortable with herself) minus the 30 pounds.

  15. Right there with ya.... | 25/05/07

Marianne..your story touched me. I am in entirely the same boat. I went from being a very active, thin and healthy person for over 10 years, to becoming completely sedentary, unmotivated and unable to control my eating habits. I know how hard it is to look at yourself in the mirror and not even recognize who you have become. I don’t leave the house if I don’t have to- I don’t socialize or do the things I used to do. It’s awful to feel like you have lost control of your life.
I’m glad you’re getting help- I am starting therapy again next week. Plus I started a low carb diet and I joined a gym again a few weeks ago (and am actually going). Keep your chin up and look ahead, not behind. We can be whoever we want to be…

  16. Marianne | 25/05/07

    Thank you.

Depression runs rampant in my family, but having reached 29 without being hit by it, I thought I had dodged the bullet. I was wrong.

I stopped socializing too, to the point of emailing my friends asking them not to try to call me or see me, that I would contact them when I could. I missed many days of work, and I’m in a fragile financial situation due to that (insert rant about “the health care/social assistance system, their waiting lists and their anachronistic attitude to depression here”).

I, too, wish you a prompt recovery. I hope you feel “yourself” again, and that we both manage to stay that way (and I don’t just mean weight, I mean our heads).

  17. Persephone | 25/05/07

I agree with Lambman about Tyra’s weightloss.

And as I always say, if she really did not care what people thought, she would not have made a big deal out of the picture or being called fat.

  18. Marianne | 25/05/07

However, I would like to state unequivocally that I am a strong supporter of healthy living, and am convinced people look their best when they’re on the lower end of their normal BMIs, simply because their bodies are not being overworked.

Eat to live, be active, keep hydrated. Your body will follow.

Hard to remember these simple truths when you hardly have the will to get to go to the bathroom, though, I know.

Sorry about confessional. *blushes and tiptoes out*

  19. SuperModelSuzie | 25/05/07

She just LOVES attention and talking about herself. She does look great, however!

  20. barbie meow | 25/05/07

Yeah it’s pretty airbrushed or photoshopped.. she’s so beautiful regardless of her size so who really cares

  21. Helen | 25/05/07

She looks amazing as ever, and I still love her…but after all those interviews where she said ‘I still feel hot at this size’ and ‘I’ve accepted I’m going to put on a few pounds every year’, it IS hypocritical, and a bit bizarre, for her to lose the weight. She shouldn’t say things with such vehemence if she’s going to go back on them. And I mean, she could have just lost the weight quietly and not sold the story to a tabloid if she really needed to slim down. Why publicise her obvious hypocrisy? And I just think it’s a bit of a let down to the women who I imagine were really inspired by her ‘So What?’ campaign for her to then appear on a magazine presenting exactly the kind of airbrushed, unattainable ideal she was supposedly campaigning against.

  22. miss tiffie | 25/05/07

remember when she talked about how she looked and felt great being a bit bigger? while i admit she got a bit too big, it’s kinda funny as well. of COURSE she feels more comfortable, she’s got the world staring at her closely writing down every pound she gains and loses…. it’s kinda sad. either way, she always looks great. she’s tyra banks for goodness sakes!!! i’m glad she’s getting HEALTHY as opposed to just trying to be skinny again…

  23. Helen | 25/05/07

Also - ‘a rep for the star denies any weight loss’? I thought the whole point of the photoshoot was publicising her weight loss…which is obvious anyway?

  24. Nicole | 25/05/07

She doesn’t look 140. And also, she has strange legs!

  25. Kar | 25/05/07

What a fucking hypocrite!! She was always saying that she didnt care that she gained weight and she started that BS “So what?” thing but obviously she did care. She is such a liar and Im sure a huge let down to all the fatties who were in love with her becuase she was embracing her newly gained FAT ASS. Everything she says on her show is hypocrital and is clearly not realiable because half the time her “Panel” of experts consists of biased non-experts who rest on one extreme or the other. I would write in to her producers to tell them how fucked up their show is but Im afraid Tyra would have me on the show to preach to me and tell me “So what Im a hypocrite? SO what!!!”

  26. kitschy | 25/05/07

She’s flippin’ hot. Tho’ I would say the larger self is her ‘real-type body’ - read: when she let herself be truly at ease with food and not work out religiously for 5hours a day or something. But as I said, at present - flippin’ hot.

  27. ino | 25/05/07

The meal plan at the end doesn’t really look like a “fake” celebrity diet…if most people at just like that, they wouldn’t have a lot of chub, to say the least. Notice that there are no carbs after breakfast…when carbs are eaten at breakfast at all. And there is no high fructose corn syrup in the diet whatsoever, no added sugar other than from fruit, which the body processes differently anyways. I say that I am glad she is finally healthy again, and cutting out all the garbage that she was eating before. Publicity stunt or not, I think that people should find her ability to bounce back inspirational, not knock it. We could all learn from a change like that! =)

  28. Nikky | 25/05/07

Of course, this is all part of her greater scheme to become Oprah. Wait another year and she’ll weigh 211 then struggle for years as all of America sympathizes with her inability to control herself.

  29. maddie | 25/05/07

what happened to the so what campaign? she was my idol.

  30. Sophia | 25/05/07

Now she admitted she was fat? What happened to the “You call this fat”, “I am fat and I am proud” show?

  31. Sloan | 25/05/07

I think it’s hilarious the way people say it’s to be “healthier.” While there is nothing healthy about being obese, there is nothing inherently healthier about dropping a few pounds. A model’s worth is their appearance, period. Tyra is vain, like all of us, doubly so because she used to be a model and triply (is that a word?) because the media made fun of her. You’ve got to admire the woman’s savvy. She made money being thin, then literally hade her cake and ate it too, then dieted and hit the gym so she’d look slimmer and all the while saying it’s all about self-love and freedom. What she has is freedom to make tons of money and play both sides of the hand.

  32. Sloan | 25/05/07

“had” her cake. Nikky, that’s a good one. She definitely wants to be the next Oprah.

  33. narcissiste | 25/05/07

I’m with you, sophia. She is the epitome of mixed messages, with what seems to be two distinct personalities… tyra of ANTM and tyra of “the tyra banks show”. tyra who does a photoshoot with a contestant portraying a bulimic model, and tyra who has the fat former anorexic on her show talking about the media’s influence on body image, self esteem, and eating disorders. tyra who bemoans stick-thin celebrites, and tyra who has nicole richie on her show and accepts her bullshit excuses for having become frighteningly emaciated. … tyra who tells the world to “kiss my fat ass” and encourages women to embrace themselves as they are, and admits to being more comfortable when she’s thinner. the litany of hypocrisy goes on and on…

  34. Anonymous Realist | 25/05/07

    Marianne -

Brave of you to be so open, especially around icy and cruel folks like these (yes, I’m including myself in that.)

Tip of the hat to ya. ;)

  35. Holly J | 25/05/07

I agree with skinnygurls assesment of Trya. She probably never realised she was getting that big. However, I sitll like the idea of so what. The whole point is we are people first and formost, and we should be judging one another based on our looks.

  36. Muffy | 25/05/07

There’s something wrong with this picture as we’ve discussed before when we first saw it. Her legs are so untoned and so thick near the knee. Either this is photoshopped or she had lipo. It’s too unnatural looking. She’d be more toned than that, or more shapely. They’re just strange lines from crotch to knee….no one had fat knees but thighs that don’t touch. Not real. And same about her stomach. It’s so pudgy looking, untoned. I don’t think if her stomach was flat it’d look still so thick. There’s just too much wrong with this picture.

    Oh well……

  37. Leah | 25/05/07

how she lost most of the weight- photoshop

  38. Mary | 26/05/07

I think she lost more than 30 pounds because i am 5′6 and 160 pounds and i am soo much slimmer than her before picture… i really think she is around 190

  39. Christine | 26/05/07

Is there diet she can go on that will decrease the size of her forehead?

Tyra’s a nut. I hope she gains it all back.

  40. Kate | 26/05/07

Money can’t buy you a good weave, apparently…

  41. Muffy | 26/05/07

    lmao Christine!!! hehehe

  42. Frankie | 26/05/07

SG your explanation reminded me of myself, when I gained weight ofcourse I was pissed at the comments and remarks and used to either disappear or hide under loose, dark clothes, and get all defensive if anyone ever mentioned my body as a whole.YET I managed to lose weight and trying to get back in shape, first of all to like myself more, second, to shut those people’s mouths but most importantly..fit into some tight cute clothes again and to never worry at the beach in my bikini ;)

  43. Zoya | 26/05/07

they put photoshop-makeup on her sick-looking face on the mag pic. lol.

  44. tallenglishgirl | 26/05/07

She looks verystrange in this picture. I suspect photoshop but we’ll never know.I’m almost as tall as her and I weigh 145lbs but I think I look slimmer (don’t have her gorgeous waist though)!

  45. Loffles | 26/05/07

If she was 170 pounds she was still in the healthy range of the BMI (she’s 5′ 11″). Yes, before you jump on me BMI has issues. Just saying she wasn’t actually at an unhealthy weight…

  46. Katie | 26/05/07

I really liked Tyra, she gave curvier women someone to look upto and now shes just given in to media pressure.
I spose least she looks healthy and not stick thin. She does look gorgeous tho.

  47. just_me | 26/05/07

Katie, she is of course still curvy.

She looks good. As an avid dieter myself, I can’t really blame her for wanting to look good, and personally, I would die if I weighed 140 at 5′10″, let alone 170.

But it is a tad hypocritical, I think.

  48. Ruby | 26/05/07

I think she is 140. I have the same measurements as her and that’s how my body looks like.

Well, let’s subtract 10 lbs for her boobs.

  49. Brenda G | 26/05/07

    ruby you lucky girl

  50. lexi | 26/05/07

i was always slender, but a few years ago i went through a lot of personal things, and became scary skinny. when my life changed for the better i started to regain the weight. but i kept gaining gaining gaining gaining, pretty soon i was really heavy. i knew i was overweight, but i figured that i looked way thinner than the number on the scale would imply, IT WASN’T UNTIL I SAW PHOTOS OF MYSELF that i realized i looked fat, that i was fat, that i looked as fat as the scale numbers implied. it was humiliating! i have lost 50lbs since then (september 06), and am back to ‘normal.’ here’s the new problem: according to the scale i’m average. i wear a size US-6 which at 5′8″ is also pretty average. so why do i STILL LOOK FAT IN PHOTOS? it never ends, does it…..

  51. Spaniard | 26/05/07

I think she ´s lighter than 140 lbs. I´m 5′11 and I weight 130 lbs and look fatter!

  52. carmen | 26/05/07

she did cos she didn’t wanna be in the fat girl club. See, all these skinny celebrities go on and on about how awful it to be constantly scrutanised for their looks and how they feel women should have curves and how scary some really really skinny women are - they say all this whilst sitting comfortably in their size 0-2 jeans and vest tops sipping their fat free/dairy free/caffiene free latte.

It’s ok to be fat or curvy or what ever for everyone but them, the minute they gain some weight be it 10 pounds or 50 they start spouting rubbish about how the media is so image obsessed whilst secreting puking up their lunch and hiring personal trainers just so they can lose the weight really quickly.

Tyra is a stupid hypocritical ho for making the comments she did and then going on to say she feelm more comfortable when lighter. Face it, she has been used to be being beautiful, sexy etc etc and then she got fat and got attention for all the wrong reasons so homegirl slimmed down and can now once again sit there and preach about self image and body image and how we need to love ourselves the way we are whilst not having to worry about it herself.
    Hypocrite.

  53. hannah | 26/05/07

    can we say hypochondriact

  54. Lani | 26/05/07

That picture has been photoshopped. Like someone said, her thighs go straight down and don’t curve AT ALL. And if you look at ANYONE’S legs, they will be thicker near the top. Hers just go straight. And if she’s “skinny” now, where are her hipbones? One of her ribs is showing on her chest, bust her hipbones were removed? What the hell?

  55. tallgirl | 26/05/07

I actually think she’s heavier than 140…Spaniard, you’re probably jusy way harder on yourself but at 5′11 and 130 pounds you are very thin (I wish I was that light!!). I think Tyra is more closer to 150 (because obviously there was some airbrishing in that picture!)

  56. katypea... | 26/05/07

theres like 20 pounds difference between the first & the second picture just due to photoshop!!

  57. Sloan | 26/05/07

Aw Lexi don’t be so hard on yourself. Most of us don’t look our best in photos unless they are snapped at good angles by a good photog. Since we’re generally being shot by family/friends= amateurs, the look isn’t always the best. And, some people just photograph well. I knew a woman who looked kind of blah in person but amazing in photos. Just one of those things.

  58. glam | 26/05/07

clearly the pics are photoshopped. how could she have 2 inches between her thighs at 140. it’s rediculous i wish they could just get the full TRUTH out about this celebrity weight loss and have that be that.

  59. Thor | 26/05/07

You’re a cup half full person, aren’t you?
    Your theory is very nice.

  60. Veronica | 26/05/07

At first, I felt this was hypocrtical too. But then I thought about it, and really, the “So What?” campaign and “I feel better at a lower weight” go hand in hand. The “So What?” campaign is about saying “So what? This is the weight that I am comfortable and happy at. ” If you’re fat and UNhappy, or thin and UNhappy, then you should change it. If you’re HAPPY being over/under the “standard” weight for you, then great, SO WHAT if that’s not what the media embraces as beautiful.

  61. Persephone | 26/05/07

I am sure her feet are not together and that is why there is space between her thighs.

Moreover, having space between your thighs has a lot to do with bone structure. My moms thighs have always touched no matter how thn she was. My dads thighs never touch now matter how much weight he gains.

  62. karmalife | 26/05/07

I agree with Sloan on the picture thing. Even when I was a very toned size 4 you could never see any definition in my arms (in most pictures anyway) because of the flash or what have you. I always thought I looked fat in pictures!!! That’s why when we see some of these celebrity shots I know that these women are a lot skinnier than they look…

  63. Loffles | 26/05/07

I love these people who say they’d die or kill themselves if they were a certian weight…My god. What empty, horrid lives you must lead if your only reason for living is your body!

    I feel sorry for you!

  64. antonine | 27/05/07

Did anybody noticed that on the first picture which actually is a cover, she do look skinner? Even if it’s the same bikini almost the same pose? Wasn’t something done to slim her? :P

  65. Muffy | 27/05/07

On a sidenote, I find it repulsive that her hands look like she’s trying to peel off her bikini bottoms. Makes me wanna barf actually. Yes, I’m square!

    But isn’t that really inappropriate???

  66. Renee | 27/05/07

    So What.
As long as she’s happy with her body and she stays in a healthy range then I think thats the best example anyone can give. Way to go Tyra

  67. Asha | 27/05/07

is 140 healthy for someone is 5″10? wow… also, i cant believe someone said she should lose 30 more pounds. thats just sick!

  68. daringdancer | 27/05/07

I think she looks totally airbrushed on the magazine cover! It looks different to me even compared to the picture inside! I do have to say that the picture of her, the bad one the media splashed everywhere, looks photoshopped too, to make her look bigger maybe? Her arms look so much smaller compared to the rest of her. It looks fake to me. Just my two cents.

  69. fandango | 28/05/07

OK, is NO ONE going to comment on the “I’m always pulling my bottoms down” pose?? GOOD LORD, that is *the* only pose she does (of course, to avaoid any “love handle” squeeze). ugh.

  70. Swanhilda | 28/05/07

It bothers me that there have been SO MANY pictures of Tyra posing in a bikini since that “fat” picture of her first surfaced. It’s like she’s trying to prove over and over how great she really looks, and it seems like she needs to convince herself of that as well. It just doesn’t seem like the “So What?” thing to do. We all know photographers have their tricks for best angles and poses, not to mention airbrushing and photoshopping, so she has to know she is not pulling the wool over our eyes. Wouldn’t it seem far more credible if she had not done all of these deliberate cookie-cutter, photoshopped, cleverly posed, bikini photo shoots? I’d rather see a photo of her where she was caught off-guard by the “paps” –just like she was in her original “fat picture” with a more conservative one-piece suit, without the model-like posing? Then, if she has truly lost the 30 pounds, we could all see it naturally, not by some doctored-up pictures. I would also like to see a picture of her that shows the entire length of her legs, not cut off above the knees, because I think her legs look very disproportioned in real life. Her leg below the knee is really thin compared to above her knee.

  71. Ashley | 28/05/07

um, if anyone watched her damn show, they would know that the FAT picture was the picture that was altered just so a magazine could get a story. She put on the same freakin bathing suite on her show and looked NO WHERE near the weight portrayed in that picture. Which is amazing because there’s no way she could’ve magically lost all that weight immediately after that picture was taken. Tyra is beautiful and all those haters out there are just jealous

  72. Ashley | 28/05/07

plus i dont know if anyone noticed, if you look at the FAT picture, you can tell the picture was altered because her arms are their normal size which would not be the case if her thighs were really that big.

  73. Freddie | 29/05/07

Tyra, is fake and phony. She knew she wa not happy fat, but she couldn’t be honest and say that.
So after she lost the30lbs then she goes on the tabloids and flants her new figure.
She is also a Oprah wannna be.

I read in Star that she’s a big fan of the Atkins diet

I bought this week People magazine as I saw myself and a way out. I used to be 140 lbs last August and I gained 30 lbs. I couldn’t believe that a high personality profile was going through the same thing as me at the same time. Her mid-December picture is a pure reflection of myself at the same time but I did use my fingers to count for the 6 months 30 lbs weight loss period and guess what the People mag issue is dated June 4th but I bought on May 29th…that’s not 6 months in my head. On the other hand, if you look at the food suggestions in the mag (w/ pics) There is no one on this planet with this diet that would not loose weight even w/out exercise… I think it looks delicious but can be pricy depending on what side of the country you live in (papaya prices in my town is too the roof!!!) As for her 140 lbs picture her inner legs had been altered. After reading the People Mag article I was driven to learn more especially for recipees as I am such a poor cook, I was driven to get to the bottom of her way of eating by getting to the bottom of it on her show website. To my dismay, no quick link was available… which proves to me(to my disappointment) that this was not a publicity stunt like Paris, Lindsay, Brad & Angelina, Tom & Katty. They are a real bore to me as they are only try to make the junk media to cash in without working so hard and keep their wages for future movies. Let’s smell the coffee North America and drop them off the face of the earth… I still love them but their publicity doesn’t drive me to go to the theatre.

  76. Jamie | 31/05/07

yeah I agree with the theory too, skinnygirl.
And with her being so used to being so small she must not be so comfortable with all this weight. She probably felt better about it when she lost it, not just because of image but because that’s the way she always was.

  77. Zion | 31/05/07

I hate to admit to being through with a fellow sista, but I am done with Tyra. First of all, I refuse to sit up here and say that she looks beautiful. After all, Tyra has a show that is centered on her HARSH judgement of other women’s beauty. Next, Tyra has never been a small woman by any means. She has always been one of the meatier supermodels. I pray that photoshop has not occured for this picture because it is not a good picture by any means. I’m going to get to my point.

I have a problem with the fact that Tyra wanted everyone’s sympathy when she first gained weight (Fine, heck I even said the girl gained a couple so what). She jumped on the bandwagon of, “Oh lets love ourselves.” She even had a show where women were displaying their weight on their chests to show their pride. By the way, Tyra never displayed her weight that she claimed to be so proud of. She had experts on that show to massage her ego and basically said the following, “Hey, Tyra is comfortable with her HEAVY frame you should be too.” Now, after she talks all these women into “accepting themselves” she has the nerve to loose 30 pounds, and wants to still be catered to. I’m sorry, Tyra just climbed to the top of my FAKE list. I will no longer support her show or anything affiliated with her.

  78. Anne | 4/06/07

Tyra is famous because she was once a super-skinny supermodel. She built her empire on the backs of normal-sized women who felt pressure to lose weight because of women like her.
Her show “America’s Top Model” continues to make the world a harder place for ordinary women to feel comfortable in and glamorizes extreme thinness.
Therefore, ANYTHING she has to say about fat acceptance and feminist rights is hypocritical bullshit. Period.
She’s a stupid, hypocritical bitch. I don’t know how anyone could possibly like her.
Frankly, I don’t know how she sleeps at night.

  79. linda | 8/06/07

she looks gorgeous. she has that bomb body. =]

  80. Michelle | 12/06/07

I love Tyra. I don’t think she’s a hypocrite at all. She certainly wasn’t losing any money or publicity when she was bigger. She still had her talk show and ANTM, ratings were good for both shows and her fans supported her no matter what. This couldn’t be a publicity stunt or a drive for “attention” because girlfriend already had both. No, I think she simply wanted to slim down. And while she DID start that So What? campaign and on nearly every show of hers she talks about self esteem and how it’s okay to be whatever size you are, she also mentions quite frequently that it’s one thing to be confident in your body, and it’s another to be okay with being unhealthy.

If you’re 300 pounds, nobody should make fun of you for being that size, nobody should make you feel ugly or worthless or less of a human being. But you also shouldn’t fool yourself into thinking it’s okay to be that size or that it’s healthy to be that size. So while she is still campaigning for self esteem issues and for the media to get off her back and off other celebrities backs about being xx pounds, she chose to get healthier. I never thought she was fat but she certaintly could have lost a few pounds… and she did. So What?

  81. Kellie | 19/06/07

OK this is ridiculous! Tyra did not loose 30 pounds! Yes, she admitted that she had been working out and toning up for ANTM stuff, but come on. 30 pounds?!? First of all, she knows she doesnt need to loose that much weight. Also, we would see a huge difference if she did because 30 pounds is a lot of weight. And who would really know how much she weighs expect for her. This is not an actual interview that she did with this magazine. And hello, did we all forget that she is a retired supermodel?! She knows how to pose for pictures, so when this picture was taken, she knew what to do to look the best. Tyra Banks is a beautiful, inspirational, and magnificent woman and if you cant see that, maybe you should get your eyes checked. Sorry to sound harsh, but I gotta support my girl.

  82. blondie339 | 22/06/07

ok i like tyra…but she is such a hyprocrite! after that picture came out, she made a huge campaign about how that is NOT fat and how she is comfortable with that weight and that women all over should be comfortable with it. and then what does she do next?…she goes and loses all that weight. what kind of message is that!?

  83. SoCal girl | 22/06/07

I think she’s beautiful, and GOOD for her for losing the weight!!

She’s definitely an idol of mine.

I model so I know what it’s like to gain 2-3 lbs then have to lose it. IT SUCKS! But it is hard esp. when you see pictures and think, hm, I should be about 7 lbs lighter :)

  84. Ol | 23/06/07

To stay on top there is always a need to stay in shape, oreven better to gain and loose, to gain or loose. first covers are yours

  85. sam | 26/06/07

oh i wish someone who go on and assasinate her already!

  86. Jackullin | 30/06/07

I think Tyra looks absolutely gorgeous with and without the extra weight. By the way it is possible to lose that much weight so quickly when you have a personal trainer which she can obviously have. I do think it is kind of weird to have that SO WHAT thing. but it is healthier to not be overweight and I guess being a former supermodel might be something she wants to keep up. You know being skinny and all that. nonetheless I still think Tyra Banks is reallyyy cool! don’t care what any1 else sayss xoxo

  87. *Chi-Chi* | 6/07/07

omg she was never that fat that was a lie really come on who int he world can lose 30 pounds that fast please

  88. *Chi-Chi* | 6/07/07

o and her show she clearly stated that she is 160 pounds not 140

  89. Italy♥ | 11/07/07

    ahaha “so what” ??
    What if she ain’t PHOTOSHOP??

  90. rose | 17/07/07

it`s good that she did somethin about it although i love tyra just the same. the girl has been STICK thin for years to be a successful model and gained some weight when she retired, so what? i love her :)

  91. Bonnie | 17/07/07

    You go girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tyra is allowed to change her mind. Is she suppose to live unhappily just because she is trying to prove a point to the people of America. She is human, and being a celebrity does not mean she is not allowed to live the life she truly wants to live. So all you haters can Kiss her rather more toned ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  92. LF | 17/07/07

I find it difficult to believe she is 140, as she is 5′10. She looks more like 150 or more. I am on Weight Watchers (since Aprill 2006) and I lost 45 lbs. I am 5′8.5 and I weigh 137 lbs (I’m female, too) and I look slimmer than her, I think, despite being an inch and a half shorter and only 3 lbs less. Hmmm.

I found out I actually have a “small frame” by looking it up on google so perhaps Tyra has a medium frame, so she looks bigger but doesn’t weigh as much as she looks.

  93. Mickey Jones | 18/07/07

It clearly shows that Tyra is also influenced by the media, the result being the altered photo to show her as having lost 30 lbs. In a sense it’s somewhat hypocritical to preach one thing, then do another and try to justify it with ridiculous rhetoric. I like Tyra, but I’m disappointed at the way she caved in to the criticisms of the very media she was telling her TV viewers to ignore.

  94. julie | 24/07/07

    hahahah are you serious?
what’s the whole thing about i love my body and im not going to change for anyone?
    tyra tyra tyra…

but to be honest here she still looks exactly the same.

  95. Kristy | 25/07/07

I dont understand her, one day she says she likes being 163 and thick.. now shes 140?

She let the people get to her.. thats for sure.

  96. Stacy | 1/08/07

That picture of her in the green bikinni is so edited to make her look like she has makeup.
    She looks wayyyy better there.
Her without the makeup is like EW

  97. Black panther | 11/09/07

I am down with her weight loss. She has been an inspiration to me… actually I lost 30 pounds in 3 months and I am a 5′10 african american with a curvy, top heavy figure too. (Just younger) Way to go girl. (I have 20 left, I want to look like her.) People say its not healthy, but I lost mine by mad exercise, two to three hours a day, cut way back on food. (I still eat, just ALOT less.) and sweat alot, I mean alot alot! Drink lots of water and the weight just seemed to fall off at about 10 pounds a month. If you feel better thiner, go for it. Just love yourself and do it for the right reasons.

  98. Haley | 13/11/07

It’s incredible what a hypocrite Tyra is. One minute she is talking about how people can kiss her fat ass,and the next she’s saying that she was so unhealthy. I think that her weight loss was a good thing, because she was healthier because of it, but she shouldn’t send so many mixed messages.

  99. Mel | 14/11/07

She may be a hypocrite to some, but hey, at least she has the right to be one. As a celeb who’s under great pressure from the watchful eyes of the media and public, it’s not hard to see why she went against her own ’statements’, but then again, it’s her own life.

  100. Sevilay | 1/01/08

All i can say is fair play she deserves to feel comfortable with her body and so should all women!
