Aretha Franklin Goes on Jenny Craig
May 30th, 2007 by Rian | Filed under Celebrity Diets, Miscellaneous Celebrities.
Soul singer Aretha Franklin has jumped on the Jenny Craig bandwagon in order to lose some weight before her wedding next month.
She eats 1,750 calories and smaller meals on the plan but says she is still really hungry.
“I’m at 1,750 calories a day and I’m starving. You just have to get used to portions and changing your lifestyle.”
The heavyweight diva, who will wed long-term boyfriend Willie Wilkerson Jr. next month, insists she knows the Jenny Craig diet works - because she has seen amazing results in the past.
1,750 seems like a lot of calories to some of you, but when you’ve been eating more than double that, you can certainly lose some weight at that amount.
Maybe we’ll get to see some before and after photos next month.

First!
Good for her.
That is not very many calories at all. If that was all I ate in a day I’d be starving too! Well, good luck to her, hopefully she’ll have a slow starting fitness routine worked in, that will help her to feel better too.
its about time
GOOD LUCK 2 HER.
Love love love that lady!! Uber talented and beautiful. She’s struggled with her weight for years. Hope this helps but personally I think she’d be better off with a nutritionist, personal chef and personal trainer Jenny. She can afford all the bells and whistles!
Yes, you can. She will lose weight. Eventually, however, she’ll need to cut more.
I GAIN weight on that amount of calories. Must be nice to have an actual metabolism…
1750 is not a lot of calories. I actually thought you were joking when you said it “might seem like a lot to some of you”. Unless you are completely inactive and less than 5 feet tall with a tiny body frame, 1750 is completely healthy. For the average American, it’s perfect for a diet plan. Remember, a 2000 calorie diet is pretty standard. My body burns about 2300 a day thanks to age, exercise, and size.
No! We don’t need another big beautiful woman conforming the celeb standards. She is gorgeous with a little more meat on her bones. Plus, she wasn’t known for her figure, but her voice. Though if she feels it is a step towards a healthier life, then so be it.
Actually, one of the most common mistakes people make when losing weight is to cut calories too much and to go to low. Most women (the vast majority) could easily lose weight at 1750 calories as long as their nutrition was spot on.
I’m a personal trainer and sports nutritionist and I own a business wherein I work as a consultant and trainer for professional and amateur athletes and regular people trying to lose weight.
In my opinion 1750 is too low for her and she’ll plateau and crash on this “diet.” Also, Jenny Craig is processed crap. She’d be better off sticking with natural foods.
She is severely obsese, she would need to start with a low-cal diet to lose weight before even thinking of working out, especially at her age, so she seems to be going about it the right way.
Hopefully it works for her… otherwise she’s not long for this world…
I will love Aretha no matter what she does.
aretha is one seriously fat lady
i dont think any diet that leaves you feeling hungry is the way to go, why isnt she doing exercise too?
She should find out if shes an eligible candidate for stomach banding if shes really serious about loosing weight, keeping it off and starting a healthy lifesyle.
Go Aretha!
I always thought she carried herself well and looked great as a full-figured woman, but a few pictures I have seen of her lately look like she’s ventured more into the realm of the morbidly obese, and for her health’s sake, she needs to lose the weight.
UK Department of Health Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) are a daily calorie intake of
1940 calories per day for women
and
2550 for men
yeah to seriously think 1750 is “alot of calories” for the avg. woman atleast, you must not know very much at all about nutrition. I’m 5′4, which could be considered fairly short, and thats about the amount I’d eat just for maintaining my weight (128) if i were fairly sedentary. and if i excercise and am active, I can eat about 500 cals more and maintain easily.
anyway, at her weight, she probably could get away with eatting much more and still losing. by making such a drastic and sudden cut in calories, she’ll lose alot initially, but then as someone else mentioned, she’ll plateau.
but then again, i don’t think this is a big concern in her case. since it’d probably take her a month to fully plateau. and by that time, she’ll be off her diet, and enjoying her wedding. she’s clearly only concerned in losing some vanity wedding photo weight/inches. once the wedding comes i’m sure she’ll be back to eating all in sight and even more out of the temporary deprevation, and end up weighing more than she did before going on the diet. smh.
1750 is not a shockingly low number if you’re trying to lose weight. I’ve had my energy output level medically tested while training for an Ironman. My daily burn without excercise was calculated at 1500 calories when I had 15% body fat @ 5′2″ 110lbs (you burn calories more quickly the more muscle you have). I don’t think Aretha has a lot of muscles so 1750 calories a day is not detrimental to this woman’s health. It’s her psyche that will suffer more because she’s probably used to eating a lot more then that.
Thanks Miss M for posting the standard. It’s amazing how many calories the average Amerian consumes a day.
Good for her.
um anon, what Miss M posted was the daily estimated average REQUIREMENTS for consumption each day. not what the average american consumes per day, which is a totally differant thing, as it’d probably be much more.
and no, 1750 isn’t “shockingly low” but it is pretty low for a woman with her weight, and would be a shock to her body since its probably alot less than its used to consuming.
but healthily, without exercise, an avg woman can go as low as 1200 cals per day in order to lose weight. 1500 for a man.
*well, avg person in the UK according to Miss M’s post, not US
It’s no wonder she’s so huge…she was quoted as saying that she craves ribs and pigs feet!
I know this is the skinny website, but I find it hard to concentrate on anything but this woman’s talent. However, good for her for working towards being healthier, healthier = happier.
eden, i guess i wasn’t clear enough. the average american woman consumes a lot more than then what is required which is only 1900+ calories. the reason so many in this country are clincally obese is because they eat more than there bodies require.
Along with the diet, Aretha needs counseling to change her mind-set. She comes from a family of thin people — both Erma Franklin and Carolyn Franklin, her sisters and Vaughan and Cecil Franklin, her brothers, were thin. All of Aretha’s four boys are thin as is her neice (Erma’s daughter).
Aretha needs to be “programmed” by a shrink to get her mind OFF food and onto other important things in her life. She should stay OUT of the kitchen and allow a trained cook//nutritionist to prepare her meals.
Aretha admits that the ‘extra poundage’ affects the way she sings. I’m happy she’s made up her mind to do this. But, she needs MENTAL help as well
I joined jenny 3 months ago and lost 28 lbs so far, freakin sweet!!
she has been grossely over weight for a long, long time. I”m glad she’s finally doing something about it.
1,750 does not represent an exorbitant amount, nor one that would prohibit weight loss. I’m a high-mileage runner and am nearly underweight (according to BMI calculations) as is, and if I eat fewer that 2,500 calories per day, weight begins dropping off me at an alarming rate. When you feed yourself, stay active and also allow necessary rest days/time, your metabolism functions quite well.
PS- I’ve been in the “I gain weight at 1,300 cals/per day even though I exercise all the time” but seriously, if you eat well, exercise to a healthy degree and allow yourself to rest regularly, you’ll be fine. Balance your life, folks, and the calorie thing fall into place.
