Heidi Klum: “Some People Are Just Born Skinny”

June 5th, 2007 by Rian | Filed under Miscellaneous Celebrities, Supermodels, Celebrities Eating.

Heidi Klum recently claimed that she has always been “too round for fashion shows” and that she never felt right on the catwalk.

The beautiful mother of three prefers to eat food rather than starve herself for fashion.

heidi_klum_060407_04.jpg

“The other girls are always much taller and skinnier. I stick to what I am good at and have never been prepared to starve myself to death and do crazy stuff just to be a thin rail, and fit into their clothes.”

Heidi also does not wholeheartedly blame the fashion industry for the “size zero” trend. She agrees that yes, they make certain rules and use a lot of super-skinny girls for bookings. However, a lot of the models she has worked with eat like crazy and just don’t gain weight.

‘They make the rules and ultimately book these skinny girls. On the other hand, I have worked with so many girls in the past who eat like crazy and do not throw up.’

‘Some people are born skinny, and that’s just the way it is.’

Well said, Heidi.

If she keeps eating shit like that she’ll blow up like Jennifer Love Hugetits or Kelly Fatson

  2. lambman | 5/06/07

She is lovely, beautiful and sweet.

She was never a stick, never could be look at her hips…still she has an amazely sexy body and an even better personality.

I agree with her too, most models are naturally thin, its wrong of people to blame the models for doing their jobs…blame the people who design the clothes, organize the runway shows, book the models and buy the fashion magazines…for the most part models are just props anyways.

    and first, bitches

  3. lambman | 5/06/07

or second, but only to the lovely lalalalalala and at least I took the time to write a comment first lol

  4. lambman | 5/06/07

actually I read lalalala’s comment and take back what I said…what a horrid thing to say…and idiot too because Hiedi has had like 3 kids, and clearly will never been the size of kelly clarkson.

  5. anonlady | 5/06/07

when she talks about models who eat whatever, i think gisele is one of them…she is often seen eating junk and she just seems to be naturally lucky.

  6. karmalife | 5/06/07

She thinks she’s “too round”??? She must have some issues herself.
I’ll admit, I always thought she had major hips compared to the other Victoria’s models, but I would never call her ROUND.
Regardless, I’m glad to hear even someone like Heidi won’t starve herself to fit media’s demands.
And it is also good to know that we are all right when we assume that some of these models are indeed, naturally thin!!

  7. Maya | 5/06/07

I adore Heidi Klum. She and Seal are the cutest couple ever, they always seem to be having so much fun, and they look so relaxed and natural. Sweet people. :)

  8. junebug | 5/06/07

heidi klum rules. just finished watching the last season of germany’s next top model.. she’s so much cooler than tyra. she also seems pretty skilled at eating in front of paparazzi.

  9. mmm | 5/06/07

Yum. That ice cream looks good. Now I’ve got the munchies…Damn you Heidi!!

  10. hannah | 5/06/07

i love her, but she was and will never be “round”.
haha… i glad to hear that not all models starve themeselves…
    yup

  11. jed | 5/06/07

These pictures showing women eating are pointless. Let’s say if they eat 2000 calories a day, they might start gaining—if they eat 1500 a day they will stay the same—if they eat 1200 a day they will be losing.

They have to eat enough to stay the same plus an additional 3500 calories to gain one pound. We have no idea how often Heidi eats ice cream cones and how many other things she eats and how many calories a day she burns and whether a 3 pound change on the scale will cause her to skip a few ice cream cones until she loses the three pounds.

Seeing celebrities eating proves very little.

  12. LN | 5/06/07

i love her! she is perfection blahhh. makes me feel kinda ick

  13. Muffy | 5/06/07

Ah bullshit! They do too throw up……………..if they eat, that is! That’s such a crock of shit!

  14. *Sullen Girl* | 5/06/07

She might be thicker than other models, but she appears to have very little actual fat on her body. Look at her jawbone and her neck… lovely.

  15. pinot fino | 5/06/07

“seeing celebrities eat proves very little”….

except that they do eat, which is exactly what everyone’s accusing the skinny celebs of NOT doing. so I would say it proves rather a lot, to be honest!

  16. Jodi | 5/06/07

Part of one the quotes seems a little off.

““The other girls are always much taller and skinnier, so it was just isn’t my girl. ”

    Whaa?

  17. Jodi | 5/06/07

And then, of course, I omitted a word in my comment, which is only fitting. Insert “of” before “the quotes”.

Also: Heidi’s cool. For some reason I really dig that she’s married to Seal. They seem “normal”.

  18. Um.. | 5/06/07

Jed- did you read the actual point of this post?? It’s not about the pictures of her eating (not directly anyway).

  19. karma | 5/06/07

    I caught that too Jodi.
Rian- can you clear that up please? Was it a misquote or typo?

  20. brandy alexander | 5/06/07

I really don’t care how a model gets that skinny, the whole aesthetic is unfeminine. I get they all need to wear clothes well and be around the same size, but the ideal shape is clearly becoming more and more adolescent male-like.

  21. Sloan | 5/06/07

She’s super pretty. The “my girl” comment is probably because English is not her first lanuage and models/showbiz personalities often refer to themselves in the third person. I agree the ice cream cone looks delicious. Is it that ice cream replacement Tasti Delite? If someone knows, please post lol.

  22. lis | 5/06/07

Heidi’s English is sometimes a little entertaining. Though I have to admit the “my girls” sentence didn’t even quite make sense in German…

I’m sure by “round” she meant softer and a big wider - not quite the same “round” that is implied in casual English.

  23. Keelia | 5/06/07

    Oh please.
She may not starve herself, but she works damn hard for her bod. She trains with David Kirsch and his regime is GRUELLING.
I’m actually with Jed on this one.

It is true that some people are naturally very skinny- although the models are SO skinny… I don’t think their sizes are something that many people can ntaurally maintain without a lot of effort.

  24. parissucksliterally | 5/06/07

she is right to an extent, but she’s also laving out the women who take laxative, or drugs.

  25. SkinnyMilo | 5/06/07

Seeing A few pictures of someone eating on ONE day doesnt prove anything….There are tons of pics of Nicole Richie eating…it proves yes sometimes she eats but it doesnt prove how much, how often, and it definitely doesnt show what she does after she eats (ie. exercise, laxies, purge,etc..Im not accusing her..just examples)…Theres no way of knowing what a celebrity REGULARLY eats from a few photos…thats why accusing someone of eating normally/healthily, or eating terribly/nothing…..cant be proved.

  26. Ala | 5/06/07

    her jawline is gorgeous

  27. sam | 5/06/07

i agree … her jawline is really nice

  28. Persephone | 6/06/07

I agree with lambman about heidi. she is one of those people that a born skinny. She will never be the size of Kelly Clarkson or Jennifer Love Hewitt.

I don’t think she has issues with her body, I think she just realizes that she isn’t a stick figure like most models.

  29. Kalisto | 6/06/07

These pictures are all from one take, aren’t they? And she is eating three different kind of ice-cream! Lucky her…

  30. schuk | 6/06/07

I love her. She´s just beautiful and so sympathic…

  31. Anonymous Realist | 6/06/07

Yeah Heidi, most humans are born skinny. Under 10 pounds, most of them.

Then they start eating shit like that.

  32. kara | 6/06/07

Anonymous Realist > ahhaha ! What a stupid comment to think humans are born skinny. weight is low but don’t forget babies are not really tall LOL ! They have generally a normal weight and it happens some are born fat !

  33. LittleBlueBear | 6/06/07

pasta and icecream is not “s**t food”, like some of you said. not super healthy either, but she should not be judged for eating them. Fries with mayo and pork fat is s**t food.

  34. Miss M | 6/06/07

karmalife: she meant too round compared to the stick insect that are the other models!

I thinks she is very attractive when she is done up (she looks horrible without make up!) but I don’t like her as a person. Everything is always so perfect in her life, she is the über-German, which I find repulsive.

  35. Jodi | 6/06/07

In the first photo, the ice cream coating (I think it’s that dip stuff!) PERFECTLY coordinates with her fingernails!

  36. apricotmuffins | 6/06/07

we already knew that some people are naturally thin. its the pressure for everyone else, people who ARENT naturally skinny to be the same size thats destroying womens lives.

The models are not to blame. the models are victims too, if they have to starve themselves to keep their jobs.

  37. Jade-chan | 6/06/07

I was about to say the same as apricotmuffins
it’s so damn unfair some can eat whatever they want and look skinny while most people have to watch what they eat or even starve themselfes(depending on what body type they like/want to be)

  38. coffeecup | 6/06/07

    I’m turned on by the 4th pic…Ohhhhhh

  39. Fliss | 6/06/07

I agree with people who say pics of people eating proves nothing, it could have been the only thing they ate that day.

The fashion industry is supposed to be about luxury and extravagance but the only thing the models on the Chanel runway remind me of is all the starvation and poverty in thw world.

I also agree with the fact that people should stop attacking models as they do not choose the standards but are forced to conform to them by agents, designers and fashion magazines. The models are really the victims and many of them come from poor backgrounds (malnourished in the first place) and are trying to feed their families. There is also the fact that many of them are impressionable teenagers.

  40. thinista | 6/06/07

What is that ice cream coated in? it looks like blood

  41. Kay | 6/06/07

There are naturally skinny girls, I agree, but all the ones I knew (a friend, my sister and two of my aunts) do have one thing in common, they do NOT eat like crazy. They actually have a little bit less appetite than average. But they do eat normal food.
I know that because they all tried to gain weight, which they would only suceed at for a while and then lose it.
For me, the only time where I could truly eat like crazy and remain skinny was when I was a teenage a few years ago.
Very likely these model Heidi is talking about are teenagers.

  42. ilaria | 6/06/07

she’s a “huge” hypocrite: some month ago in her show “germany next top model” there was a kind of scandal in Europe because SHE, HEIDI KLUM, said that a girl who was 1,72 m for 50 kg (110 lbs)was too FAT to be a model….

  43. Muffy | 6/06/07

“What is that ice cream coated in? it looks like blood”

    red #40…..muahahaha

    I don’t think that’s 3 different ice creams there. I think it’s 2: a cone and a bar. But damm, what a pig! j/k

I wholeheartedly agree, just cuz we get a glimpse of her piggin’ doesn’t mean the calories weren’t reserved elsewhere. That might have been her one meal of the day.

  44. ln | 6/06/07

Anonymous Realist- ummmm your comment made me laugh. please go back and read it again….it makes you sound like an uneducated idiot…. haha. gave me a good laugh though!

  45. Em | 6/06/07

i think she looks gorgeous. her skin in the second picture is glowing. all food debates aside, she’s naturally beautiful.

  46. Sacharomyces cerevisiae | 6/06/07

That was so profound. thank you Heidi for sharing these wonderful thoughts with us

  47. missy | 6/06/07

Yes some people are naturally skinny but people are not naturally emaciated.
    thank you very much.
and heidi is gorgeous, shes not chubby at all and some of you guys scare me when you say that shes going to blow up or something.
    please.

  48. shades | 6/06/07

wow, she is spectacular and she must know that seeing as she’s one of the most successful supermodels of all time!

I don’t know why she would say something like that? Maybe it’s to show us that everyone has insecurities. Whatever the reason surely its counter productive to portray a SUPERmodel as still not keeping up with the standards. I think its rather pathetic to complain when there are so many insecure people looking up to her, and there she is calling herself “too round”…

  49. Anon | 6/06/07

Runway and high fashion models supposed to be rail thin - not because it’s beautiful, but because rail thin girls makes better clothes hangers.

So it’s not the perfect woman’s body they are after but perfect clothes hanger. The idea is to draw attention to the clothes not the girl. But in the minds of too many young girls, being a fasion model = being beautiful.

People need to wise up and realize it is an INDUSTRY and about making a sale, not about the ideal beauty. The same can be said about men’s magazines, which glorifies the man’s ideal of the perfect woman’s body. Curvy and perfectly groomed.

  50. SuperModelSuzie | 6/06/07

    whatever

  51. mnemosyne | 6/06/07

i think everyone of us knows this kind of thing. we probably all have one or two skinny friends who eat so much more than we do and just don’t gain weight.

  52. adriana | 6/06/07

Okay I know this is off the subject, but it’s criminal someone should look so damn hot eating an ice cream cone!

  53. Karmalife | 6/06/07

I don’t see how models are victims here. No one forces them to choose their profession- starve themselves (if that’s what they do), or make a living being in photographs, ads or fashion shows based solely on their looks. Freedom of choice!!

  54. emmie | 6/06/07

Runway and high fashion models aren’t “supposed” to be rail thin. I do agree that Heidi does not fit what has become the standard for the past 15 years or so -a standard that is demanding thinner and thinner modelseach year, so called “uber waifs”. Models even ones working for couture houses were not always seen as “clothes hangers” that were once allowed to be flesh and blood women. now they are half starved eastern European teenagers who are pressured to retain their “youthful” (read malnourished) figures and they end up doing unhealthy things.
I second whoever said there are certainly naturally thin women, its the blessing of genetics and/or a healthy relationship with food. There are not, however, naturally emaciated people.

  55. apricotmuffins | 6/06/07

so, if designers are designing all their clothes for the ‘clothes hangers’ (and designers have been quoted saying that the clothes they design look best on the models), then why on earth are we, the general, normal population, trying to wear their clothes.

Theyre clearly not designing them for us, theyre designing them for an ideal that very few people can achieve. thus, everyone who doesnt fit the clothes is made to feel inadiquate.

  56. Anon | 6/06/07

The stuff that goes down the runway is NOT what goes to the stores. The clothes are originally designed on 5′7″ size 6 bodies and adjusted from their.

What is wrong with people taking the hanger comment literally. Means the model’s job is to show the clothes and clothes just naturally hang better on straight and narrow.
God isn’t there anyone on this site who’s in high fasion or has first hand knowledge of the industry?

  57. Stefany | 6/06/07

Well said Anon - I agree. How many guys really want to date a clotheshanger. They like girls with some shape and to look like a FEMALE!! We are born with hips and breasts in order to bear children. That being said I agree there are naturally thin women and most of it has to do with genetic. Heidi Klum is not going to balloon up like Kelly Clarkson as someone mentioned earlier. She does not have the genetic make up nor the bone structure. she will always be a beautiful woman - not to mention she has had like 3/4/5 kids and still looks as good as she does

  58. apricotmuffins | 6/06/07

anon, they still design clothes with one figure in mind. clothes should NOT be scaled up from a size 6, as a size 6 body is very different from a size 16 body. Bigger girls need clothes too, and to think that women who wear larger sizes shouldnt wear anything fashionable is as petty as it comes.

  59. Dee | 6/06/07

I’m glad she said this, she has a point. She is one of my favourite models! Models don’t have to be underweight to be a success.

  60. MeL | 6/06/07

    models do eat!
of course there are exceptions but in this case
this woman is a good example that you dont have to starve to look good.
maybe she’s lucky for not gaining but she born like that.
vlada is the most flawless model for me & she does eat!
she’s so skinny & lovely .but not sick
    love this example women.

  61. Nicolette | 6/06/07

Wow Heidi is not round she is fabulous and looks great! And she is totally right too.

  62. Madeline | 6/06/07

I agree, not all models starve themselves. I am naturally thin (though not tall) and I eat whatever I want, and I don’t seem to gain weight. I have gotten a slight belly, but that’s just because of the way my body is. If I were to tell anyone that, they would say ‘oh whatever no you don’t’. Heidi, along with everyone else, has the right to express her insecurities about her body. Everybody sees their body differently from how others view it. A skinny person has every right to complain about her body as much as a big person does. Skinny bodies are not perfect either.

  63. carol | 6/06/07

Some cynical people honestly can’t understand certain people have fixed body types, and their body types won’t change. If your predisposed to be plump as a child, then your going to be plump unless you work on it. It works with skinny, too. I am average weight and height, and my brother, who is 6″3 is 150 pounds. Genetics plays a large part, and you can try to gain a few or lose a few, but it is harder/easier depending on your body type.

  64. glamaddict | 6/06/07

what is all this bull about teenagers are naturally skinny and can eat like crazy and not gain an ounce? Im a teenager and I gain a pound if I eat a cookie. when I was undeweight (When I was anorexic and only ate one bowel of oatmeal a day) the smallest size i could get into was a 5. and i still didnt look ill at all, no one even made comments i was skinny.

I exercise 5 times a week and diet but i still fluctuate between 123-130 (im 5′5).

  65. Fiona | 7/06/07

Must be rough! I am slim, but I have to work at it by carefully watching what I eat, and chasing my two kids around for exercise.

  66. Milky | 7/06/07

so basically she just regurgitated what a bunch of others have been saying… niCe… she got sorta fat, then lost it.. big whoop!
and you can tell that she’s a bitch from hell just watching the way she acted on Project Runway. ..oh and her outfits and hair on that show !!!! horrible cheap mall chic ETC she’s a typical bimbo model.

  67. lalallalalallal | 7/06/07

This is probably all this damn chick ate for the last week. Nobody is as skinny as she is naturally. She’s obviously an anorexic in denial trying to lead the rest of the world astray. What a biz-natch!

  68. duhhhh | 7/06/07

Glamaddict, not all teens are built the same. When I was in my teen years, I ate WHATEVER I WANTED and maintained 110 pounds at 5′5. As soon as I turned 18 it all went downhill, though.

My 2 sisters had to watch what they ate so that they didn’t gain. I don’t know why I didn’t. Honestly, who knows why some people gain and some don’t? Shit happens. Deal with it.

  69. mimi | 7/06/07

glamaddict, we are all different! I’m also a teen (I’m turning 19 soon) and I can eat whatever I want and maintain around 100 lbs that way (I’m 5′5). I also tend to lose weight very quickly so I always have to watch out and try not to reduce my calorie intake. I also never ever work out, I’m too lazy for that. I’m telling you the complete truth. And I’ve been very skinny all my life. My mother also has always been very skinny. It’s genetics. By the way I’m from Eastern Europe. I see a tendency that a lot of skinny models nowadays come from here. Maybe it’s just the way we are build up.
So I believe what Heidi says - it is completely possible.

  70. glamaddict | 7/06/07

it’s hard when youre obsessed like I am. I honestly would like to be a model but I am too fat.

  71. renee | 7/06/07

dont think like that girl, love your body, at least try ok. i have my own issues to :( I wish we all loved our bodies. those that are insecure anyways.

I dont believe Heidi though. My therapist has been doing this for over 25 years and has seen lots of models and have heard the experiences first hand. MANY models do develop eating dsorders, usually after they start. a lot of them are not naturally that thin. lets be realistic, good lord.

  72. Natalia | 8/06/07

how can you NOT agree with what heidi is saying? she is basically saying what we already know, that some people are born naturally thin while others have to struggle to maintain a lower weight. what’s new there?

she is certainly not claiming that all models are healthy and were born as thin as they are, she simply stated that some of them are and that not all models belong under the catgory of ‘unhealthy’ or have an eating disorder. we all know a lot of them do, but she’s not making any reference to them.

there is nothing wrong with anything heidi is saying. i think she’s great. she’s down to earth, simple and yet still one of the most fabulous people to watch. she doesn’t make an effort to conform to anyones standards. she’s fantastic being exactly who she is. you got to respect that.

  73. hedgehog | 11/06/07

she has to be one of the prettiest people out there and she is not thin or fat, but looks very healthy. unfair :(

  74. Astrid | 11/06/07

Oh THANK YOU Heidi!!! I’m absolutely like that! I eat everything I want and I’m still thin (or skinny?). People just don’t understand. It’s so boring at least! And I don’t understand why they don’t.

  75. Ali | 16/07/07

SO totally wrong to show pics of celebrities eating and assume that that’s normal for them. Notice how their places are always full and they’re taking like one bite. They most likely either take that one bite and leave the rest or they eat that one ice cream and then have a salad with no dressing or fruit for the rest of the day. But whatever, they can keet being photographed and we can keep drooling over the fact that skinny people can too eat ice cream. Then we all buy it and pig out and get fat.

  76. rose | 17/07/07

awww i love heidi. she`s gorgeous & supasmart

  77. myartisfashion | 22/07/07

What people fail to let the public in on is what these celebrities are doing to burn these calories off, whether they eat like this daily, if this is their only meal of the day, what their general food habits are.. Celebrities get paid to do TV shows about exercise, being filmed working out to show that they “like to keep fit” when they make completely different claims elsewhere. In reality, we don’t know who is doing what, unless we live with them. All I know is that it’s not solely beauty and body image that has been distorted. The way people view life has been distorted, it’s un-real, it makes me furious.

  78. Gibbons | 27/07/07

Perhaps it’s all the drugs. If you do a lot of coke, and you eat like a horse, you still don’t gain weight. Yepp….coke it is then.

  79. Baby | 5/08/07

Hiedi is very small and could have done runway shows but I guess no one booked her for them and for that the designers are idiots. Heidi is gorgeous and will NEVER blow up like Kelly Clarkson.

  80. Eira | 7/12/07

I agree with what heidi klum sed - sum people are born skinny. My best friend’s a LITTLE bit shorter than me (I’m 5′6) and she weighs below 100 pounds. She doesn’t hav an ED. in fact, for someone really skiny, she has a BIG appetite (sp?). but she hates her body coz she says her body’s flat..no curves at all

  81. Reenefupnob | 9/02/08

I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
