Jessica Simpson’s New Diet is NOT New

June 23rd, 2007 by Rian | Filed under Celebrity Diets, Jessica Simpson, Tabloid Magazines.

us111.jpg

I was so disappointed when I opened this magazine to read about Jessica Simpson’s “new” diet. Especially since the article proclaimed that this is “The diet that’s changing Hollywood”.

Ha. The alleged “diet” is the SAME one that is featured in nearly every single tabloid diet article! See the article and menus for yourself here. These supposed diet plans are nothing but the same thing recycled over and over.

In order to back my claims up, I decided to do a little research on this little diet phenomenon. Sure enough, check out the menus from Tiffany’s diet, Janet Jackson’s diet, Tyra Banks’s diet, Ricki Lake’s diet, and this supposed hot Hollywood diet. And that is just some of them.

(You may have to scroll down to the last page of the articles to see the meal plans).

It’s always three healthy meals per day with small portions, plus two snacks. Or they like to say “five small meals per day” although it’s the same thing. Granted, the diets look really healthy, as they have a combination of lean protein, complex carbs, fruit, vegetables and healthy fats. But how is it that the celebrities suddenly “discover” a new diet when it’s the same one, all the time?

This seriously leads me to believe that the tabloids have no idea which diets the celebrities are on at any given time. Instead, they keep changing around and reprinting the same one over and over and changing the name.

How disappointing.

Anyway, sorry for the long diatribe. Click here to read the article about Jessica Simpson’s latest loss, which includes stories about other celebrities who are on the “diet”.

    Dearest Rian,

If I were you, I would remove my name and address before publishing the cover of a magazine on the world wide web.

  2. Li | 23/06/07

no…tabloids keep exclaiming about these “NEW!” diets because they know it’s a surefire way to sell more papers. i’m sure there perfectly aware that what they’re printing is not new. it’s just a way to make more money.

  3. Pinky | 23/06/07

This might be a stupid question but how could she lose 20 pounds in two months while still eating and working out? i eat pretty well and exercise an hour a day but i haven’t lost 20 pounds in the last two months. I hate these articles. Such BS. And I love how they “estimate” the weight. So she’s 5′4 and 145 pounds, but then they show someone who’s 5′8 and they say “she ballooned up to 140″? Makes no sense.

  4. girlfriend | 23/06/07

Funny…Clarkson’s article also mentions a Hollywood diet too. I think it should be is part of the same list, because it ceratinly is an old one that they’re touting to be new, LOL.

Seriously though, I just thought that there’s a whole lotta irony on that cover.

  5. bhzuna | 23/06/07

Plus the before picture is so photoshopped…hello inflated.

20 pounds in two month is not healthy - any doctor or dietitian will tell you that if you loose more then 1% of your weight in a week it’s not just fat your loosing, it’s muscle too!

  6. Britni | 23/06/07

i just wanted to let you know you should probably take your address off the front of the magazine, cuz there’s weirdo’s out there.

  7. parissucksliterally | 23/06/07

20 lbs in 2 months is BULLSHIT.

I REALLY wish the tabloids would just move on from Diet Stories- I’m so sick of them.

  8. Lula | 23/06/07

Hi I came across a pic of ben stillers wife christine and I remember awhile ago you did a post on her. I saw some pictures on celebrity baby blog and she looks to be so much healthier. I hope we get some more ‘healthier’ posts.

  9. Anya | 23/06/07

About Mandy Moore (also featured in the article) IF SHE IS 5′10″ SHE IS NOT 135 lbs!

  10. Heather | 23/06/07

20lbs in 2 months is possible and it’s not COMPLETELY unhealthy to drop weight that quickly. It’s recommended that to lose weight and keep it off, loss should occur at the a rate of 1-2lbs a week. Jessica must have lost about 2.5lbs each week, according to the article.

Regardless of the diet she followed, she’s looking awesome these days. I think that’s the perfect weight for her. I personally think she looks less than 120lbs, being that she’s only 5ft3. I also dont think she weighed 145 in the “before” photo. At her height, her BMI at that weight would have placed her in the “overweight” category, albeit barely. She wasn’t overweight then!!

  11. Heather | 23/06/07

And Anya, I agree–Mandy can’t weigh 135lbs currently–maybe back during her slim days! 135 is pretty slim for someone of her height. I’d “estimate” that she weighs about 165 currently.

  12. brookelynn | 23/06/07

The tabloids suck so bad at weight estimations. None of them seem even remotely accurate.

  13. Emi | 23/06/07

Anya & Heather… I 100% agree with you about Mandy… being a 5′10 girl myself she would be MUCH thinner at 135…in the before Id say she’s pushing 200 then the after 160 as well…

Where do they get these numbers? Seriously.. I mean US Weekly is more creditable then Star and Nat. Inquirer right? How are they able to lie, I’m assuming they clear these weights with the celebs? ugh.. wish I knew..

  14. GoshGollyMe | 23/06/07

at that weight she would of lost 11 pounds without working out at all.

    20 pounds is totally do-able

    20/8=2.5

she only over did it by 1/2 a pound a week.

no big deal..besides..as soon as she ups her calories 5 pounds goes right back on.

anyone can do this…im not impressed.

but she does look so much better

  15. GoshGollyMe | 23/06/07

and oh yeh…135 and 5′10′’ on mandy m….

i think not. she still looks chunkyish and 135 on someone that tall could make most gaunt.

    i think shes shorter…she has to be….

    135 and 5′5′’ and bloated….that i would believe

  16. Anonymous Realist | 23/06/07

Agree with you SkinnyGirl - not a diet. What people need, if they want to stay slim, is a gradual, permanent change in lifestyle. And that’s not a diet.

  17. Anonymous Realist | 23/06/07

P.S. - but of course, that doesn’t sell books and magazines…

  18. cat | 23/06/07

i don’t even think any of those celebs in the jessica simpson article even look that slimmer. it just looks like an awful before pic and a great after. jessica seems to have lost 10 pounds at most. 20 pounds on 5′3 girls is a lot.

  19. KallystaDee. | 23/06/07

Wow whatever they always say the same thing.

  20. tim jones | 23/06/07

dammit two very hot women, jessica and eva, lost weight.

  21. Tucker | 23/06/07

haha I thought the baby said that she was bulimic when I first looked at the cover. And I could totally see me doing something like putting my address and name on the internet by accident. I do stuff like that without thinking all the time, haha.

  22. Persephone | 23/06/07

No way Mandy Moore is only 135 pounds. She doesn’t even look like she lost much weight in the before and after. She is just wearing more flattering clothes in the after.

As for the Jessica story, they have to do something to sell magazines. No one would buy the magazine if the title said Jessica Simpson lost weight in a really boring and sensible way.

  23. Loli | 23/06/07

is that good or bad tim jones?
i think that eva looked better in the before picture and ive never seen her looking that skinny before.

  24. phoebe | 24/06/07

Mandy Moore could be around 135 lbs. There’s no way she’d be 160 or 200. NEVER. I’m 5′9″ and I’m 122 lbs and I’m by no means skinny.

  25. Ala | 24/06/07

There’s no way JS lost 20 pounds….MAYBE 10 at the MOST.

These articles have always been stupid and untrue. You’d have to be gullible to think that they are actually the REAL diet the celebs eat.

  26. b | 24/06/07

wow all the food they have her eating in the meal plans seem like it would add up to be way over 1.300 cals. they must be really small portions or something cuz man that seems like a lot of food. oh and 20lbs in 2months is impossible without starvation and mandy moore is way over 135lbs at her 5′10″ hieght. But i do applaud them for guessing jess at a more believable 120lbs now and 145lbs when she was heavier, cuz most mags guess bogus wieghts that are really way too low

  27. Pip | 24/06/07

On the before & after in the article, there’s little difference. I hate those high waisted jeans, but even then she simply looks a little more toned and about 10 pounds lighter in the after - look at her waist and thighs. Nowhere near 20. And the trainer says how he never weighs or measures his clients - so unless Jessica herself chose to tell the magazine, they are completely guessing. I like the sound of the trainer though - how he emphasises keeping feminine curves but toning them.

I love how all the before pictures are usually with sad faces or unflattering angles, like “I’m sad and fat” while the after are always in stunning dresses, makeup and big smiles, like “Thin is best :) ” Ah subliminal messages…

  28. Holly J | 24/06/07

Jessica Simpson still looks like poo! Frankly, all the celebs mentions look like poo…

  29. L | 24/06/07

Jessica looks more like 110 pounds and Mandy Moore cannot be 140, she looks more like 150 (before photo). They can’t estimate right..

Anyways, does this 5 factor diet thing actually work? Anyone on it?

  30. rhen | 24/06/07

Jessica Simpson would look more stunning if she already shed pounds. I am also looking forward to see Shiloh pictures in the magazine.

  31. notsure | 24/06/07

    Why disappointed?

Are you an overweight person waiting for the next miraculous solution?

Small portions and exercise is the only way.

Unless you want me to hook you up with my model friend’s dealer.

  32. Tucker | 24/06/07

Pip—I totally noticed that too. And it cracks me up because you know those sad face pictures they used are completely out of context almost always. They usually just take a picture right before they sneeze (okay I have been sitting here for like five minutes and I cant figure out how to spell sneaze(?) sneez(?) snease(?..no I dont think that one.) haha anyway

  33. Liz | 24/06/07

I don’t beleive Jessica lost 20 pounds. she is 5′2 so it would be very noticable and unattractive if she lost 20 pounds. she looks like she has lost 5 pounds and who cares anyways cause she was never overweight.

  34. Reasonable | 24/06/07

Their weight estimations are so off 98% of the time that I’ve completely stopped reading those magazines. Not only that, but Jessica Simpson has gone on record as saying that while she was working out for “The Dukes of Hazzard” her waist went from a 26 to a 23, not that she got down to a 26. They had to keep altering her shorts because she kept losing weight.

There is no way Katherine Heigl is now 130 pounds. She’s definitely about 10 pounds more than that.

  35. Andrea224 | 24/06/07

Um maybe these celebrity diets are all the same because it an actual BALANCED diet not some stupid fad. They way to lose weight and to keep it off is not to restrict one food group but to have healthy amounts of all types of foods.

What are you expecting to see?

  36. Fliss | 24/06/07

    Little Shiloh is so gorgeous!

  37. anonymous | 24/06/07

tabloids suck man… i wish they would just get rid of them. they put stupid ideas in young peoples minds who actually believe whats in them (something i sadly was once a victum of which led me to believe that that was how i had to be, and suck 4 years of my life from me with an eating disorder). its a shame. its all so untrue most of the time. youre better off getting something like vouge or allure than trashy US or even worse the national enquirer. its all a buncha bull.

  38. Ala | 24/06/07

I dont understand why people are always ready to hop on the next fad diet bandwagon. The only way to lose weight is to eat less than you are now, and exercise more. Period. It is that simple.

  39. Sandy | 24/06/07

Jessica Simpson’s lower half ‘before’ was not even that chunky. She is just top heavy and her outfit emphasised it before. I doubt she lost 20 pounds.

  40. Sloan | 24/06/07

“Mandy Moore could be around 135 lbs. There’s no way she’d be 160 or 200. NEVER. I’m 5′9″ and I’m 122 lbs and I’m by no means skinny.”

Phoebe, even if you don’t see yourself as “skinny” you must be super lean. A friend of mine, a dancer, is 5′9″ and 130 pounds and is absolutely svelte. Her legs are perfect and some find her upper body too thin … I know different people carry weight differently but at that height one could weigh 145 and still be slender. Or more if they carried a lot of muscle.

(Yeah, I agree, Mandy Moore isn’t likely 135. Agree with all others who posted who said the tabs are crazy bad at their guesses.)

  41. AK | 24/06/07

Let me tell you something. I’m 145 pounds and 5′10″. I look pretty much the same as Mandy in her red dress. I’m slim, but not skinny. I have very long legs but they are strong and toned. My waist is 27″, 28″ on a bloated day. I’m usually a 6 but like anything, I can pull a 4 sometimes, and sometimes I do an 8 - that all depends on the brand.

I’ve been 133 pounds before. Girls envied and complimented me and guys said I looked gross (go figure). Many is not 135 but she is not 160, “pushing 200,” or anything ridiculous like that. She’s simply a normal, semi-athletic, realistically slim and healthy girl who happens to be over 5′7″. The reason she gets so much crap is that any celebrity over 5′7″ or so is usually a supermodel. Mandy is not, but she’s still beautiful. I think people don’t think of it like that.

  42. Mee | 24/06/07

Yeah- these articles are pure bull…just a way to get weight-conscious Americans -like us!- to buy the mags–but they are entertaining nonetheless!!

…You don’t just “eat right & exercise” and lose 20 lbs in a little under 2 months (in most circumstances)…I think either she supplemented Harley’s diet with weight loss pills OR she ate far less carbs than those listed in the sample diet plan…

…& I agree with you Sloan, I am 5′8″ and 120 lbs and I am SKINNY! lol!…so I don’t know what is up with Phoebe…I am not “anorexic-looking” but I wear a 2/4 and am very lean so if she is a full inch taller than me and weighs as much as I do she has to be pretty slender (although I recognize that individual body fat percentages vary)…

  43. Jenny | 24/06/07

What are those jeans she’s wearing? Maybe it’s the jeans. They look great!

  44. tim jones | 24/06/07

Loli, if you know me or have seen any of my posts, you would know it is a bad bad thing. I love my women with a lot of meat on them.

  45. Mia | 24/06/07

Her trainer was on E News this week and said that she did not lose 20 pounds. US Weekly is full of crap.

  46. Anon | 24/06/07

Yeah, Jessica said she got down to a 23″ during her Daisy Duke days. She’s wearing William Rast jeans in the “after” pic above, which fit about half a size larger than most high-end denim brands. I bet she’s wearing a 24 now.

  47. pinot fino | 24/06/07

Jess was a 23″ as Daisy Duke? my god, that’s so unfair - she still had boobs! when I’m little enough to fit into my 23s my chest is, to put it nicely, unimpressive.

she does look a hell of a lot better now. when she was bigger she was a little too hefty for my taste, but at her thinnest she looked pretty unwell.

  48. pinot fino | 24/06/07

and actually, I LIKE the fact that the tabloids are finally promoting a halfway healthy eating regime as the “new hot diet”. Too many people get sucked into fad diets because they think that’s how their Hollywood heroes look the way they do. Most of those people won’t lose much weight at all, because diets that ask you to eat only maple syrup (or whatever the current fashion is) aren’t really that practical, if you need to live a real life (or if you’re not that good at ignoring extreme hunger pangs and fainting spells). If they are lucky and manage to actually stick to the often-impossible diets for a couple of months, they lose 20 pounds and screw their metabolism in the process, and think “yeah! I’ve done it! I look GREAT!” - and then go back to their crappy old eating patterns that made them fat in the first place.

As everyone’s already said, sustainable weight loss requires eating a healthy balanced diet and doing exercise. If you’re actually incapable of figuring out what that means for yourself, the plan that Pasternak suggests sounds pretty good (though they must be pretty small portions, because if I’m in charge, the average slice of lemon pie has about 1300 calories on its own!)

    Hmm. long post. ^^sorry^^

  49. drdisaia | 24/06/07

It is just something else she will try to sell.

  50. Muffy | 24/06/07

On another note…….Brangie’s baby is really adorable but Tomkat’s baby is still cuter. *snicker*

  51. Karma | 24/06/07

I would like to hear more about her trainer’s workout regimens. From the looks of it, it seems like they are 5 full body workouts per week. What ever happened to recovery time??

  52. manda | 24/06/07

karma– i totally agree!! you need a days worth of recovery time if you are going to do it right. if you are doing strength training every day you shouldnt be doing full body you should be working on diff parts of your body every day. but o well

  53. kat | 24/06/07

    she looks great!

  54. offtopickinda | 24/06/07

awww…shiloh is looking more and more like a retard as she grows up. I mean that literally.

  55. Who? | 24/06/07

    wooooooooo
    hoooooooooooooo.

  56. Tucker | 24/06/07

I just feel bad for that baby because I dont think its physically capable of closing its mouth

  57. Aly | 24/06/07

Totally off subject…Shiloh Jolie Pitt is such a beautiful baby.

And you guys are all right…. that is not a new diet. It is the eating lifestyle that is recommended by all trainers (including mine) to lose/maintain weight when working out 5-7days a week.

  58. Tucker | 24/06/07

I really dont think John Mayer weighed 225 in the first picture. More like 200. I guess he is tall though. What do you guys think?

  59. stepho | 25/06/07

When was that picture taken? I almost don’t recognize her face. I think the before picture looked better :(

  60. purpleplague | 25/06/07

20 lbs in two months is fine. That’s a daily 1250 calorie deficit, which you usually can reach with 2 hours daily of cardio and eating 1200 - 1500 calories a day.

  61. AP | 25/06/07

SG with all the attention jessica is getting now would you please do a post on ashlee???

  62. Pinky | 25/06/07

purpleplague, lol, i guess that’s why i haven’t lost 20 pounds in 2 months since I only have time to work out 30 min or an hour 4 or 5 days a week.

  63. SuperModelSuzie | 25/06/07

It could just be me, but the two pictures of Jessica don’t look THAT different. She looks to be a bit bloated in her brunette picture…that’s all.

  64. karma | 25/06/07

Pinky- you have to also keep in mind that Jessica was making a lifestyle change. I know you say you work out every day for an hour and eat well, but most of these people who are featured in this article made big changes to get results. Your body reacts to change- if Jessica wasn’t working out or eating properly, of course she is going to lose weight if she starts hitting the gym 5 days a week and eating 5 healthy meals a day. You need to shock the body somehow in order for it to change. Doing the same routine day after day is going to give you the same results. You could add some time to your workouts, change the foods in your diet, or try eating 4-5 small meals instead of 3 (if that’s what you’re doing now). Just my opinion, but I thought it might help.

  65. karma | 25/06/07

p.s Or an even better idea; add some weights to your routine!

  66. stefbo | 25/06/07

I don’t buy in to Jessica’s diet. I think she looks great and has definitely lost weight, but not 20 pounds!! The “diet” listed in the magazine seemed like a “normal” way of eating…I don’t see how Jessica lost weight eating that amount of food and exercising 25-45 minutes p day. I work out more than that and eat less than that amount as well. It depends on the day - some days I am hungrier than others. My weight has not changed despite the amount of exercising. I think Jess is eating a lot fewer calories than those listed in the daily diet plan

Maybe Karma is right that you have to “shock” your body, but when I went from doing Bikram yoga 5x per week to running (20 miles p week) and lifting, I gained 5-10 pounds….oh well I guess

As for Mandy Moore, no way she is 135 pounds esp bc she is 5′10″ If she were that weight, she would look a lot thinner - I think she looks great, but def weighs more

  67. Pinky | 25/06/07

Hmmm, maybe you’re right. I already do a variety of cardio and intense weight training routines, so maybe I should try the five small meals thing. I don’t do that now. Thanks for the input.

  68. Anon | 25/06/07

If she dropped 20 lbs in 2 months to get to her natural weight then doing it while eating and excercising is not unhealthy or a lie. I’ve dropped 5 lbs in 2 weeks before after a very lazy sleep and food packed vacation. No special diet. Just eating normally again.

  69. lambman | 25/06/07

I think when you gain and loose weight this often you do it more quickly and drastically. Your body looks a certain way for a reason, if you change your whole diet so much and then slack, and then do it again, your body starts to get back into and out of shape more quickly.

  70. workitout | 26/06/07

who cares, jess looks great as usual! and its so funny how you all say that the tabloids are just so utterly and completly off, yet you are able to make an absolutey certain guess at her weight! lol its hilariousss you all think your experts!

  71. jess_is_great | 26/06/07

to”stefbo”: commenting about it being impossible to lose that weight and eat that amount of food, because u said you are eating much less, its totally possible -shes keeping her metabolism constantly going, controlling her GI, and eating a good amount of calories for her body size that contains properly balanced nutrition ie. right amout of fiber, protein, etc. per meal, sometimes you can eat too little calories which causes your metab. to go slower. also that 5-10 lbs was probably a lot of muscle it weighs more than fat you know…also the more muscle mass you build the faster your metabolism is thus you burn fat and calories more efficiently!

  72. lk | 27/06/07

I would guess JS is about 105 - no way was she ever more than 125! Remember the camera adds pounds. She is tiny and has always been!

  73. SoCal girl | 29/06/07

Yea, I wanted to add that I model and I’m 5′9 and weigh 120…

Thats REALLY thin…Honestly, I hate to be that small, but my agent demands it…

Mandy Moore could be 135, but I bet it’s more than that…most likely 160ish…

When Tyra Banks gained all that weight she weighed 165 and still didnt look fat.

When you’re really tall, the pounds take longer to notice. You can gain a good 5-7 lbs and no one would notice like they do on girls that are around 5′3-5′5…

It does depend how you carry your weight, but tall girls tend to get the advantage…

    :)

  74. horndog69 | 3/07/07

I’ve got an all-protein diet for her!!!

  75. Lexie | 3/08/07

    wow, is that even possible.

  76. Reenefupnob | 10/03/08
