Can Kelly Clarkson Be a Healthy Role Model?

Thanks to everyone who sent me email tips about Kelly Clarkson! Unfortunately, she does in fact look like she has gained back any and all of the weight she lost last month.

Kelly was recently profiled in a teen magazine talking about how she wants to be a “healthy” role model. Which is really good and all. However… is overweight “healthy”? (And I swear I don’t mean that in a rude way, just being honest). She is nowhere near obesity or anything, but does look overweight.

What do you all think?

Can Kelly Clarkson Be a Healthy Role Model?

  • Denise |

Obviously the frustration of what’s going on in her life is affecting her weight. She’s eating out of anger, and probably using food to soothe her hurt feelings. Even still, this outfit does nothing to compliment her body, which isn’t that bad. A different look could make all the difference and at least help hide the weight gain.

  • brandy alexander |

She is nonthreatening, but healthy? Probably not.

  • M |

I think a) she wears really unflattering clothes and b) will she stop going up and dwn so much! Bt she is totally too heavy now and looked her best way back wen she was lik a UK 8

  • tim jones |

Man, that cute face, those thick thighs, soft arms, and supple belly are gonna occupy me for the next 15 minutes.

  • Swanhilda |

she yo-yos a lot, which is not healthy in my book. She needs to maintain a healthy weight long-term to achieve some credibility. And this outfit does nothing for her.

  • kacey |

omg she apprently time traveled back to 1999 to pick up that outfit.
and she could stand to lose 20-25 pounds. she is in no way “healthy” by medical standards

  • schuk |

But her belly is quite flat for her weight, isn´t it ?

  • Kittah |

Yep, exactly what I said about her before. Her bmi most definitely has to be above 24.9. Not healthy.

  • ali239 |

SkinnyGirl I’m soo glad you brought that up!! I’ve been thinking about it for a while, too, and I find it so frustrating!!! I don’t think Kelly is a ‘healthy’ role model at ALL!! ‘Healthy’ role models should be girls like Hilary Duff or Halle Berry or Drew Barrymore- women who profess to eat healthy instead of bragging about being a ‘healthy-looking’ role model that loves junk food. C’mon!

  • s |

she’s obviously a naturally thick girl. I’m sure a lot of her yo-yo dieting has to do with stress (some people eat). Hopefully she’ll get it under control to be a better “healthy” role model.

she should have fired her fashion consultant before letting her manager go….yikes, Kelly - what were you thinking?

  • SuperModelSuzie |

The cloths and flat shoes doesn’t help how she looks. She could look sooo much better with the right wardrobe choices.

  • stefbo |

maybe she means a ‘role model’ in the non -weight sense - like being a good person, not being trampy/trashy, having respect for yourself, etc…

not everything has to always do with weight - and I am sure that tons of young girls do look up to her - not all people are as concerned about weight as we are on this site.

she is a much better role model than those celebrities who drink excessively, do drugs, go to jail, starve themselves, and sleep with lots of guys

  • Steph |

Come on, she’s a little overweight - but that’s actually known to be healthier than being underweight. Plus, we don’t know he eating habits.

Also, am I the only one who thinks we should send Elle magazine millions of angry letters for the airbrushing job on its cover?

  • Mo |

She picks horrible clothes for her body type… okay, so she’s not super skinny, but she shouldn’t dress this way even if she was!! She needs a stylist - STAT.

  • julia |

i don´t think she´s a good role model. me myself ain´t very skinny (size 8) , and to me kelly clarkson is sort of fat. ali239 is right, drew barrymore, hillary duff, that are good role models. it´s all about eating healthy. and kelly clarkson doesn´t look to me as if she would like healthy food…

  • erica |

she is no role model for me.

  • julia |

    size 8

  • skinny minnie |

    shes not healthy, she’s fat

  • suzy |

She appears at least to have a healthy appetite! All kidding aside, she is certainly overweight, and that’s as bad a role-model as the uber-skinny size-zero’s are. Is it one in three American kids who are overweight or obese? They don’t need to be looking at a girl this size and saying “it’s OK, look at Kelly Clarkson. She says she’s healthy so its OK for me to be a lardass, too.”

She shouldn’t wear tops that show the fattest part of her hips; no one wants to see that. And those pants should be burned, she couldnt have found a pair that make her look stubbier, and the crotch-bird is just… I’m speechless.

  • hmph |

haha she’s pretty much anything but healthy.

  • Chels |

As long as she gets enough exercise and eats nutritious foods, I highly doubt she is unhealthy. Actually, she probably doesn’t have an overweight BMI. I’m 5′4″ and my BMI says I;d be healthy at 140 pounds. If I was 140 pounds, I bet I would look even more flubby then she does.

    Good for her.

  • V |

    What’s wrong with you people??!!!
I for one am glad to see someone in the public eye who isn’t a size 0, and has trouble with their weight.
I yo-yo with my weight, and it seems no matter what I do I can’t stay stable, and I do not have an eating disorder. Some people just struggle with it. I think she looks fine.

  • momus |

well it might be an extreme but it’d rather have little girls idolize her than a scary skinny anorexic girl. and at least she’s saying that it really doesn’t matter how much you weigh to sing.
however, if she wants to be a role model, no offence but she can take a stab at being HEALTHY instead of yoyoing and then posting your face on someone else’s body in a magazine photoshoot.
plus, the outfit… the crotch-bird… i won’t even go there.

  • Joslin |

I’m not sure that she’s overweight–I mean, how tall is she? She’s not uber skinny or anything, and her pants are a size to small for her, but I’d be willing to bet that her BMI is midrange, not overweight. What are her height/weight stats?

  • Mo |

not to be insulting or anything…but you guys are a wee bit hard on her. She looks fantastic! I hate how, when celebrities re pin thin, eveyrone jumps on them! She isn’t fat at al! If she wa fat she would have fat hanging out of her clothes. Her stomach is flat. She may not be toned to what is expected in todays society but she looks great! She isn’t built to be a skinny skinny girl! I would rather the celebrities looked like her (normal) than pin thin like Nicole Ritchie, etc.

  • Persephone |

I think how a person presents themselves and their acts should be the basis of why they are considered a role model. From what I have seen of her, she is a better role model than most in young Hollywood.

If we are talking about body type role models, then not really. There are people who have ideal bodies somewhere between fat and too thin.

  • ln |

ali239- i disagree with you stating that hilary duff should be a role model, she admitted herself she “got too skinny” at one point. she clearly wasn’t eating, although she looks a lot better now! BUT i do agree with your overall point! defintely agree! :)

kelly doesn’t look bad per say….just unhealthy

  • Anna |

i would say more so than someone whos really too skinny but she should not gain anymore weight, either.

  • georgie |

she may be a bit chubby, but she certainly looks happy and healthy with it! lovely skin, hair and makeup. i wouldn’t be unhappy if i looked like her :-) i much prefer seeing her to one of those anorexic chicks with bad hair and skin.

  • laurafin |

There’s more to someone as a role model than their weight.

She’s obviously not said she wants to be a role model to kids about fitness and healthy lifestyles, she probably wants to show kids that there’s more to being famous than shoveling bags of coke up your nose and flashing your bits in front of the media’s slobbering consumption of it all.

It’s pretty damn narrow minded of anyone to imagine that her weight would be the only reason that she might be a role model to younger people.

  • Lori |

I personally think she is really pretty but she keeps wearing those low low rise “rocker” pants that are way to long and it just makes everything SO WRONG. But Unhealthy weight…..Id bet if she lost 10 shed be in the normal BMI range.

  • Lenore |

She’s clearly not obese, but I don’t know how fair it would be of me to say she’s fat and/or ugly. She seems to be pretty happy in the pictures, I’m guessing she probably feels comfortable in her body and isn’t that the most important thing?

  • peach |

In the first picture she looks good!
ok, her clothes are horrible here and are unflattering.
Ok, she struggles with her weight. But no way can u call her a lardarse - she’s hardly morbidly obese.
I’d put her at about a size 14 (uk) or 10 (us)
    what’s wrong with that?
she DOES look more healthy than most celebrities. Persephone i agree - its hardly like she’s snorting coke or taking crystal meth to stay size 0 like most young famous people.
She’s just ORDINARY. she’s proven you can make it even if you are NORMAL. thats inspiring to young girls.
and anyway, most of america are fatter than her anyway - so she is a good role model to them!

  • Danielle |

She’s chunky, but I don’t know…..it kind of looks good on her. She looks very happy.

  • clo |

i guess its good to have someone in the spotlight whos not a size 00. i wonder if she looks thinner in person?
i also agree that she picks bad clothes for her body type, she needs a new stylist ASAP, her clothes are also ugly

  • Megan |

Sure she could tone up a bit and that outfit is horrible.. But I think she’s an average sized woman, not overweight. Anyone who thinks otherwise should ashamed of themselves for allowing their standards of beauty to be warped by the Hollywood bobble head trend. People should be applauding Kelly Clarkson for her refusal to be stick thin, not bashing her.

  • Anon |

She has a crap album coming out. Fired her manager. Is probably stressed out of her mind from cancelling her tour. She’s not usually this heavy and I’m cutting her some slack and saying this is because of stress.

  • coopy |

I am on dating websites. I have met females who looked like her. When I see someone like that I would have a tendency to run away as fast as I can. ( But, I talk to them for a little while, not to be rude). Her dating website profile probably says average body. But, she is definitely overweight. Not obese yet, just overweight.

  • Joelle |

    In short, no.

  • Alexa |

definately not a healthy rolemodel. Being overweight is just as unhealthy as being underweight. It’s just another extreme in the opposite direction. extremes in any case are not healthy at all, no questions asked.

  • Fiona |

I am not in favor of size 0 women like Victoria Beckham but kelly must be a size 10 and she looks fat and not healthy.

  • peach |

her album isnt crap i like it :p

  • sulci |

her outfit looks good, must be hard for her to be bigger than normal.

  • Brittany |

Why can’t she be a healthy role model. She looks fine to me. You people kill me. If someone isn’t super skinny, then their fat. I think Kelly looks good. She looks like a normal healthy woman.

  • rosemary |

honestly, i think we all have unhealthy habits we could work on… for kelly clarkson it seems to be her yo-yo dieting and for other celebs who are “healthy- looking” and claim to eat a bunch of junk, well thats not exactly a great habit either…however, i don’t think most of us are qualified to say wether or not she’s healthy… that’s something her doc should know and address kelly and he habits accordingly…as for just looking at her, she doesn’t look bad, she could definatley tone up, but I know looking at her makes me feel better about myself versus looking at a tiny cele (jenna jameson or nicole richie) and the magazine’s advertising is probably just playing on making insecure people feel better about themselves rather than reinforcing it…I know I’d personally be way more inclined to buy this magazine than another magazine talking about jessica simpson’s new diet or whatever…just my opinion though…

  • Kali |

Kelly looks wonderful! So what if she’s 5′4 and 145 pounds? Leave the poor girl alone, she’s beautiful and a talented singer. I also agree with Anon, she’s probably very stressed!!

  • An |

ok, i know that everyone should be ‘accepting’ of how their bodies look and such, but we shouldn’t be thinking that people who are overweight (as Kelly Clarkson appears to be) as healthy! Just because 60% of American adults are overweight doesn’t mean that it’s healthy- it may now be normal, but it’s not healthy. Kelly Clarkson is not a healthy role model- I don’t want to be as big as her.

  • sarah |

it’s like you said skinnygirl, she’s not fat, nor is she obese, but she IS overweight. i think she is a very pretty girl and i love her music, but she would look fabulous if she lost 10-15. she looked best at the 05 vma’s imo.

  • jaime j |

I’d say this is about the size she was when she first became famous. I think she’s naturally a little bigger than average, so I could definately believe this is a healthy weight for her body type. She looks awesome in these pics…well, besides the clothes, of course!

  • SkinnySexySarah |

    she’s a chunk

  • anna |

I think her clothes are really unflattering, but she looks REALLY happy… so she looks great to me.

Someone who is happy and carrying a bit of weight looks miles better than someone who can barely walk or smile becuase they’re so skinny.

  • Ian C |

no because she is a fatty

  • meeshell |

Does anyone know how tall she is?? How much do you think she weighs>?

  • Erika |

As others have pointed out, not the greatest outfit choice. She’s not super skinny; however, I really don’t think she’s overweight, either. She’s average. Why can’t that be a healthy role model?

  • carmen |

she could afford to lose 10 pounds or so…but meh, if she’s happy the way she is, then yeah, she could be considered a healthy role model.

  • Cherie |

I think that her BMI is definitely over 24. She looks definitely bigger than my sister - and my sisters BMI is something between 23-24.

But her [Kelly’s] hair and face looks still so beautiful even her body looks just … awful.

  • Layla24 |

Kelly is beautiful and talented. Those pants would look funky on anyone…they just aren’t cute. I admire Kelly, and perhaps she is enduring something that we know nothing about. People cope in different ways and it is so unfair to be this judgmental of someone else. So yes, Kelly is a role model because she is talented, intelligent and stands up for what she believes in.

  • Kitty_Cat |

I think Kelly just has an unfortunate body type (have you seen her in a bikin? Tiny breasts and all her weight is stored in her butt and thighs, which doesn’t help the fact that she’s on the short end)… I’m actually glad to see someone famous who appears to struggle with their weight, though she could really stand to lose 15-20 lbs. At the very least she should tone up a bit, especially those arms.

  • amle |

I just think she needs to wear clothes that fit.

  • kellysai |

i think that being a good or ‘healthy’ role model extends beyond someone’s physical appearance. What about the fact that she came from nothing, won AI and has a fabulous career?

What about the fact she is not flying around town flashing her girl bits and spewing vodka and coke soaked vomit everywhere? Just because someone is beautiful and thin, does that make them a good role model? I hope not!

maybe we all need to focus on more than just her weight…she seems like a nice, happy, down to earth person.

  • Naty |

She has to be at least 150lbs..if not 10lbs more than that. And those pants mght be a size 10, but that doesn’t make her a size 10! theyre waaay too small and unflattering

  • tes |

Ok everyone chillll out! Here’d the deal. She’s not a stick. She is a bit chubby. But she is extremely active. She dances around on stage and burns hundreds of calories. She also runs on the treadmill. She does not have the perfect body. She loves life! She has her mind set on what she wants to do. She is a strong, empowering woman. Kelly is successful. She doesn’t act stupid, she hasn’t gone to jail or rehab, she is open, honest and talented. THAT is a healthy role model, and all around awesome woman.

  • Stacy B. |

Tes, I couldn’t have said it better myself!

  • Focus. |

Oh the crotch-bird. She wants to draw away from the fact that she’s huge. Or she wants her privates to symbolize freedom.

  • laura |

she’s not a good role model because she’s extremely overweight!!!!!!! if i were her id definately lose like 30 lbs. god, she’s just disgusting

  • Karma |

I’m torn whether or not to like this girl and her ideas. First she says she “[loves] food far too much” to ever develop an eating disorder (even though we all know she briefly struggled with bulimia ) and then she says “I’ve got a butt, I’m Greek- I can’t help that. And I think it’s good for people to see normal.”

Normal?? I wouldn’t call her normal. And there is no way in hell she is a size 10 as far as I’m concerned. If “healthy” to her means accepting and loving her body the way it is, (or the way she is allowing it to be) then I suppose that could be a good thing. We need more women in the world who don’t relate self worth with the number on the scale. But “healthy” to me has always held a different definition with higher standards. Yes, like some of you, I am glad she doesn’t starve herself skinny but I wouldn’t mind seeing her a little bit thinner, with a little more muscle tone and definition.
And believe me, I can sympathize with the whole “Greek butt” concept as well but you don’t see me using it as an excuse!!

  • r |

“However… is overweight “healthy”? (And I swear I don’t mean that in a rude way, just being honest). She is nowhere near obesity or anything, but she is definitely considered “overweight” on the BMI scale”

Actually, recent studies have shown that people considered “overweight” that eat healthy and exercise are often HEALTHIER than their average weight exercising/eating well counterparts. Weight is a very poor indicator of health.

The fact is, there is no way to tell if Kelly is healthy unless you do her bloodwork and give her a fitness test.

  • thinista |

She would be a better role model if she wore clothes the right size instead of trying to sqeeze her bulges into something too small

  • ChildBride |

She looks like she’s on the heavy end of a healthy weight scale, but I wouldn’t call her “overweight.” She would look much slimmer if she wore clothes that flattered her figure - that outfit does nothing for her!

As for being a healthy role model, it’s already been said, but being a good role model isn’t just about how you look.

  • lambman |

She can be a role model for being happy with who you are…which is generally a healthy attitude.

And if she eats a balanced diet and gets regular exercise she can still be a role-model for a healthy life-style…even if she is technically overweight. The actual weight a person is doesn’t matter as much as having a balanced and healthy diet and exercise routine.

  • Muffy |

She’s not obese, but she is spilling over. She needs a new style.

I tend to think she’s NOT yo-yoing but rather has consistently been chubby. Obviously that last magazine shoot was bogus, but then, we already knew that!

    Thx, Rian.

  • saviana |

I’m not saying she looks horrible, but she definitely looks big. And while that’s completely fine if someone is happy with their body in such a state, I don’t think it’s some unreasonable request to want her to lose a few. After all, celebrities don’t exactly have HARD jobs and a part of that job just happens to be presenting a good image. She shouldn’t do anything she doesn’t want, but let’s not pretend she couldn’t lose it if she just put the effort in. All these people have to do for a living is sing/act, and look good while doing it. It’s not exactly a rough life. If I was paid millions and photographed constantly, I’d never let myself get this badly out of shape. It’s sort of like, what else do you have to do besides maintain your body and sell albums? It just seems like celebrities of all people should feel the desire to get healthy since they’re constantly in the spotlight. I’d hope she’d feel the same way, so I don’t really feel bad for her if people are going to comment on her weight gain. So many people would kill to be in her position, and if she’s not going to make the most of herself in it, I don’t really sympathize. I get my ass out of bed everyday to go to the gym, and I’m no celebrity. Just do it. Or at least, if you’re not, don’t wear THAT. Jesus.

  • Ala |

I don’t think a healthy attitude is one that doesn’t care enough to eat right for your body and give it proper maintenance with exercise.

She has said in the past that she is too lazy to workout much and if she wants a doughnut then she has one.

I believe in MODERATION, and I don’t think she has it. She seems to be at the high end of the spectrum.

  • Lady Mae |

It seems as if she gave up. I’m a size US 10 and consider that ‘thick’. I think she’s currently beyond thick. You can totally see it in her face, waist, and upper thighs.

  • Amanda |

I agree with everyone about the clothes. That outfit would make anyone look awful. I think she could probably lose 5 or 10 lbs but she is in NO way unhealthy looking. And I agree that it’s refreshing to see a celebrity struggle a little with weight. Even with money, time and the resources to do anything you want, celebrities are still human.

  • Muffy |

I had no idea that US sizes differ that much from UK sizes, Peach! Why is that?

  • leelee |

I am so damn sick of this I have to b a fuckin skeleton or people are gonna rip me a new asshole. This girl is not overweight. In normal land…. AKA not hollywood Kelly Clarkson is a normal size. How is sticking your finger down ur damn throat or starving yourself healthy.??? Get over it..

  • Nicky |

are u kidding me? she is about to have a heart attack of all that fat!

  • Kelly |

She is just trying to be a “healthy” role model because she just can’t lose that fat.

  • brittany |

what happened to liking people for their talent? so what if she has a few extra pounds, she’s beautiful, granted the outfit is awful. guess what, she’s not a model, she’s a singer. shocking i know.

  • kat |

whoa did they EVER photoshop her for Elle or whatever mag that was!!
i didnt’ think she was THIS BIG!!

not healthy - but neither r superskinny celebs so i guess her being the opposite gives a healthy balance in media exposure…if only there were more tubbies to really even it off!

  • faye |

man, no way. arg this is something that always angers me.

i remember seeing beth ditto on the cover of NME nude and feminist groups praising them for it, when she was clearly overweight, obese even i’d say.

but if an underweight star would have been put on the cover of NME, naked…it would have been racy. it irked me to no degree.

    complete and utter double standard.

you want to be a healthy role model, kelly? go on a healthy diet, don’t go overboard with it and continue to make music and STOP trying to get press the way you do. it’s disgusting. i still can’t get over that bulimia confession. utter BS.

  • Eva |

It does not look like she is living a “healthy” lifestyle. I know I read somewhere that she gets so busy and has a hard time eating right…my recommendation…find the time and a stylist!! I hope she bounces back from this slump!

  • MsCarla |

Not if they keep photoshopping her for magazines. What kind of message does that send?

  • Sam |

I have the same body type…when I was heavier all the weight went to my legs and butt…any who I do think she needs to loose about 20 lbs. But I still lover her!!!

  • cherry |

the only reason i think she may be an unhealthy role model is because she looks so untoned, i don’t know how tall she is, but i’m not much slimmer than her and my BMI is well within normal range….and having a similar body shape i can safely say she should not be wearing clothes like that!!!

a new stylist and some exercise and i think she’d look fine.

  • Jorge |

Everyone, I have a few things to mention
Firstly, I think Kelly looks amazing. She is the artist I feel most attracted to, as weird as it may seem to any of you.
Secondly, please analyze her physique. Her arms are the heftiest part of her body, disproportionally so. If you notice, her stomach is almost flat, and her hips, thighs and behind are proportionate to each other and not as chubby looking as her arms. I think it has to do with her frame, body type, and since Kelly is modest up top, the focus is drawn to her arms.
Thirdly, she may be overweight by BMI standards, but I take those ratings with a grain of salt since they are done with an inaccurate indicator and parameters. Most male athletes would be overweight as well (muscle weight), but they are healthier than most people that are within range. There are also people within range who are tremendously unhealthy. BMI is just a reference, but it is not absolute.
Fourth, as much as it pains me to say, my opinion is that she is not healthy. Since her weight keeps fluctuating, and her diet and habits keep changing, it must not be good to her body. Also, please remember the strain of the lifestyle artists have to live through, especially during their tours (not the case here). What this means is that she has unhealthy habits, and an unhealthy lifestyle, which leads to her fluctuating.
With all this in mind, I still wish that I will be the first person she told “I love you” to. (in my dreams)

  • Sara |

I really don ´t think she is that overweight. If she´d gain a bit, then propably. But being slighly overweight is better for health than being underweight. But of course this is about what she EATS: if she eats healthy food she is okay. If she is that size because of junkfood it´s not okay. But her size is fine. That doesn´t make her unhealthy.

  • Karma |

And as for the way she dresses?? She was once asked which part of her body she is most proud of. She replied, “I like my waist because it’s the smallest part of me! I do love my figure but I’m part Greek which means I’m curvy. I like wearing stuff that shows it off best.” So I don’t think we’ll be seeing her change her style any time soon…

  • stephanie |

i think she looks very healthy. like, very healthy on the verge of being overweight. i wouldn’t say she looks heavily overweight, but maybe just slightly.
in the second picture she looks pretty good. it’s refreshing to see someone who’s so obviously comfortable with their body and curves. but she ould definitely stand to lose about 20 pounds.

  • Anon |

She looks like she has at least 30% body fat. That’s not healthy. She looks a bit overweight too. Just because she looks “normal” compared to Americans, that still doesn’t mean she’s a “healthy” woman. 67% of Americans are overweight or obese. When is our culture going to stop normalizing ‘fat’? I know not everyone can get down to a size 0 (nor should they) but what’s wrong with being a healthy weight, like somewhere in the range of 115-135 lbs. for someone who’s 5′4″?

  • Lorrie |

    uhm she isnt overweight

  • isabella |

wow, she has gained lots of weight.

  • wendy |

    look at her face!
    she’s obviously overweight!
her nose is so bulbous now!

  • GoshGollyMe |

she shouldnt of dieted down to skinny h. duff size. thats why this happened. the body said..AH HAA HAHH HAA…and poof after back to old eating habits and then some.

being in denial is not healthy. and with her lifestyle throwning on 10-15 more would make her in a wt. range that would start to have health complications.

her weight fluxing all the time is even worse. she should just stay as she is and start working out. she doesnt have a stick body and should try to go back there. naturally chunky girls look better working out than dieting like freaks….

did she lose her vitamin water contract yet?
i bet they are not liking this gain at all.

she would of looked so much better with a bright green top that covered the upper arm area. this is an outfit for her back when she was skinny. now it looks like fat bar trash on her. ugh…

  • Rian |

Can we tone things down a bit and try and be nicer? Remember that everyone has different opinions - some people think she is overweight, some don’t, some think she is fat, some think she is thin. Nobody will ever agree, which is fine, but don’t get so angry at me or other people commenting. It’s just opinions… Thanks! :)

  • Josefa |

She’s not overweigth but, I think many people thinks that is becuse allmost every star is too skinny

  • Stephanie |

Um…chick is quite fleshy. Greek ass or not, that’s just not attractive.

I don’t care how many industry folks give us their best performances in expressing concern for the size 0 trend. And I call bullshit on the whole fat-acceptance thing.

It’s all about marketing a product, and Britney Spears alone has proven that one can have a successful career without any real talent to back it up.

  • KallystaDee. |

Hm…if she was toned…and curvy (not flabby), I’d say yes.
But here she looks out of shape.

  • Kristen |

I don’t know if anyone realizes this, but it is possible to be in the high range of your healthy BMI (which she appears to be) and still be perfectly healthy. Ask any high school or college softball player that can run a seven minute mile but has more flesh on them than, say, a track star. You also need to take into consideration weight distribution on her body. Yes, her legs and hips are big, but most women in Hollywood are basically medical freaks because their weight is strictly in their breasts. Most normal women carry their extra weight around their hips and thighs, and when they build muscle in their legs (from, for instance, running) it makes them appear bulky. I would venture a guess if this is a strictly health-related debate, Kelly Clarkson’s arteries are probably clearer and her blood pressure is probably lower than those tiny women who eat anything they want because of a speedy metabolism. Frequently women who are slightly heavier eat much healthier than the ones who have always been able to eat French fries and hamburgers due to their high metabolism, and therefore, end up being healthier overall.

  • Mrs. Norton |

a cute girl but, wow, what happened to her?!

  • Ashley |

Her weight wouldn’t be so noticeable if she stopped gaining and losing all the time and would start wearing clothes that were more flattering. Otherwise, I would rather see young girls idolize her than some other walking bag of bones in hollywood.

  • catseyesvc |

she looks overweight. it could be because of the stress she’s feeling over her new album but where are her “people”? she is going to have a hard time taking it off.

  • yoga girl |

Can Kelly Clarkson Be a Healthy Role Model? Hell no.

  • Him |

Since she has almost no belly fat, her slight overweightness seems to be a genetic thing, indicating that she’s probably in excellent health. Studies have shown that being overweight the way she might be isn’t unhealthy.

  • Girly Girl |

Being slightly overweight is not a guarantee that you will be healthier than someone who is normal weight. I’m guessing that since Kelly eats whatever she wants then she is indeed not healthy. She looks to be out of her weight range here. The weight range for 5′4″ goes up to 148, which is pretty high, but she looks out of that to me. It’s a huge difference from the Elle photoshoot. I wasn’t aware how much they photoshopped her, and I think that’s kind of sad.

  • nat |

Agree! Halle Berry, Drew Barrymore, these kind of women are real role models.

  • angelbaby |

no muffin tops and a flat stomach. she is the ultimate definition of curvy. she is not fat by any means.

  • glam |

eww no she can not be a healthy role model. shes flaunting her fat around like its okay to be fat and it’s not. and it’s not okay to be nicole richie size either. its just like those dove ads. the girls on there look fat to me. once again theyre saying its okay. i like the fact we have lean and slender runway models. it should be inpiration to overweight americans everywhere that they shouldnt look the way they do. they should be looking up the models and hoping one day they can be thin enough to fit in normal clothes. i know some people have problems that cause them to be overweight theres nothing they can really do. but to the people that just sit at mcdonalds day after day or the parents who see their overweight toddlers i just could smack them. its suicide.

  • Jen |

That outfit is terrible on her first of all–completely unflattering. It’s like she is trying to emphasize her trouble spots. I don’t think she’s someone I would consider a great role model. Her constant weight fluctuations (and they are pretty signficant) lead me to believe she is not at a healthy place when with her diet/body. I hope she is able to find balance. An example of a good role model for girls is someone like Kate Winslet.

  • irrational.exuberance |

I think people are placing too much emphasis on BMI as an indicator of “healthy” versus “unhealthy.” My BMI would suggest that I am overweight, but I am very athletic and wear a size 2. Regardless of her I don’t think Kelly looks healthy, and looks like she hasn’t been sticking to her running regime.

  • GoshGollyMe |

as i look at these pics more…she seems to have the binge and purge bloat….maybe its back…she admitted it…hmm…

well its an easy way to create press…tell a lie..eat some pizza and create the weight yo yo drama!

  • kayla |

She is not a role model. I hate that just because you’re bigger than you should be that you should be a role model. Fat is not okay. Its also not that hard to be skinny. Go to the gym put the burger down and shut up. fat is not beautiful or inspiring, makes me lose my appetite. size 0 is perfection.

  • ju |

    that’s stupid!!
    she isn’t near obesity!
    she’s curvy and healthy!
    and beautiful

  • Solitudes |

She looks like a woman, and she actually glows. Her weight might be above her ideal weight, but she sure is better than those anemic skeletal chicks.

Plus- she have great ass (LOL), and you people had your brain washed by the media (…and gossip sites, too. :D ).

  • Nicky |

some people bring up the fact that she is a singer not a model. Of course we know that, but the question leads: can she be a role model?

so we are not gonna talk about her talent, we talk about her huge ass and lots of fat around her heart!

  • peach |

Muffy - i have no idea why they differ so much!! it freaked me out no end when i started hearing about size 0 - i thought it was ALOT smaller than it actually was! a US size 0 is like a British size 4, which is still tiny but not AS small as i thought!!

  • emmie |

glam and kayla — please tell me that you are both around 13 years old. It still wouldn’t be an excuse for the embarrassing “insight” you have to America’s so-called Obesity Epidemic: “ummm, its like so like not okay to be fat. Ooooh, yucky! OMG! Fat people are gross, they should read fashion magazines”. Hilariously vapid and lame. I realize that I am on this silly website too, commenting on something as ridiculous as Kelly Clarkson’s weight, but you two should really get off your computer and read a book, any book, and hopefully have an epiphany beyond “size 0 is perfection”.

  • Maxx05 |

That outfit is horribly trashy, and someone with Kelly’s body type should never ever expose herself that much. She needs to drop a good 35lbs. I protest her blaming Greek blood because I have some greek in me as well, and I am the same height she is, but have 30″ hips and wear a size 00. I don’t have and eating disorder or such thing. She needs to stop eating the freakin donuts and do some exercising.

  • preeya |

she is not overweight, i don’t thi nk. she just has no waist and really thick, short legs.

  • Rach |

Poor girl needs a stylist — BAD. Her weight wouldn’t be that big of a deal if she knew how to dress to flatter her body type.

  • emoxlies |

To me she looks like she is at the higher side of a healthy weight.

  • Am |

Let’s not kid ourselves…she’s overweight bordering on fat. So no, she can’t be a totally healthy role model. She needs to drop 30 lbs. FIRST.

And for those who claim they see a flat belly and muscle tone on her, I just don’t see what you’re seeing. Sorry. She doesn’t look horrible by any means. But she is not physically fit.

I think America is so obese right now, that folks at the smaller side of overweight are now being considered normal, as in okay. And thinner people are considered SKINNY?? Size 0 or 00 is nuts, yes. But I can’t think of any woman who wore a size 16 and looked healthy. Not one. Anything between a 4 and a 12 (maybe 14) is fine. Outside of that, just too extreme.

Overweight adults are raising overweight kids. It’s a shame that fruits and veggies cost more than Twinkies and Whopper combo meals.

  • lmd |

1.) I distinctly remember seeing a little “I used to be bulimic” over her picture on the cover of one of the magazines you posted recently- probably the Jessica Simpson issue. That is not healthy or role model like.

2.) She wears clothing that doesn’t fit her and make her look good, She emphasizes all the wrong spots.

3.) How the heck did she gain so much weight?! she used to be a lot thinner than this.

  • FAWN |

shes fat . and trust me in about two years she will fall under hollywood pressures and become a stick and will look TONS better.
i dont understand how this is healthy..her fatness takes away from her face

  • pris |

she’s not ‘fat’ she’s chubby…she’s got an ass and hips

  • Violet |

No way is she too fat or even anything like overweight - she is a NORMAL sized girl and looks fit and happy. You lot are frigging numpties if you think she ought to lose weight…she’s a talented (no, I’m not a fan) woman, let her get the f*** on with it - who cares whether she’s an 8 or a 16??

  • Violet |

Ps - And yes she probably will end up stick thin in a few months thanks to tossers like you lot!

  • Rosie |

Why would somebody her size even TRY and wear an outfit like that???

    NO MIDRIFFS FOR FAT GIRLS!

  • Tucker |

I think she looks really pretty and I love her hair and makeup and clothes (except for the wings thing.) And their is no way that she is overweight. This is average, and she is one of the lucky people who can gain some weight but keep a flat stomache, which means she is healthy. If she was one of those girls who gains ten pounds and then looks three months pregnant, it would not be very healthy, but since she holds her weight in her lower body she is fine. And any doctor will tell you that her body is healthier right now than the girls who are drugging it up, binging and purging, or just starving themselves to have their bones pop out.

  • Tucker |

    and imd—-
she was bulimic in high school for six months and then ’snapped out of it.’ That caused a bid debate on here too. Basically she messed around with an eating disorder but never got into the dangerous for your life zone. Although I think if you make yourself throwup more than once (even if its just like once a month) you have an eating disorder.

  • Tucker |

by the way, my december, her new album is #1 on itunes!

  • Tucker |

okay, faye, I just saw your comment
comparing beth ditto to kelly clarkson is ridicoulous!
Beth Ditto is obviousely well over 200 pounds! NO one on this website would say that that is healthy. Kelly is maybe 150 tops, considering she’s short. Kelly does not have mounds of fat hanging out everywhere, she is average! Which is healthy. Beth Ditto is clearly obese, and yeah good for her for posing on a magazine showing that she does not care. but for her health she should lose some.

  • Christina |

    She is not overweight.
I know many many guys that have said they prefer her body over skinny celebrities.
I have a few friends that also think christina aguilera is too bony.

To me, she is not overweight but i wouldnt call this her “ideal” body weight.
But i think alot of guys love this.

  • Aly |

Her clothes aren’t flattering. She doesn’t look healthy to me. She looks flabby, but not fat. Like she eats too much junk and doesn’t work out. She has a very nice shape; just a little weight loss (10-15 lbs would look nice) and some toning and she’d be good to go. She isn’t far gone, she just needs to exercise and eat right.

  • Maxx05 |

To anyone who does not think she doesn’t need to lose weight, take a good long look at the first 2 pics of her arms. They are lumpy with pockets of fat. Those are grandmother arms. Any girl her age certainly should not be in that sort of shape, that is horrible. She shouldn’t have sagging skin in her 20’s. Period. She needs to lose weight and shape up.

  • Samantha |

    Two questions

Why do celebs always pull out the ‘role model’ stuff when they pack on the pounds?

Why do people who can afford beautiful clothes dress like they’ve hit the jumble sale? (kelly here and Miss Spears)

  • Anonymous Realist |

Role model? No way. A girl should not be looked up to physically who is that chubby, but also who is yo-yo’ing up and down in her weight. it’s not healthy and it’s also not attractive.

  • Tessa |

OK. Basically, she is a celeb and appearance is part of her job, she shouldn’t let herself go, and she did a little. She is obviously self conscious about it, and is trying to show shes “proud” of it by wearing awful, tight clothes, which make her look even heavier and calling herself “healthy.” She could lose 10-20 Pounds. Im sorry, but where is this “flat stomach?” She gains more to her thighs, shes a pare. that actually is healthy compared to an apple.

  • Beetle |

    *reads comments*

    God, I hate women.

  • Tucker |

    she has the best hair

  • CelebCrazy |

    Check out www.howcelebritiesloseweight.com
This is an ebook, that has the Diet and Exercise Secrets of over 250 Celebrities. It is a must for all of us in the know, and who want to know how these people look so incredible.

  • tara |

ugh please. so she likes carbs, lollies and chocolate. i love her for it. much prefer to see her then someone like Nicole richie wasting away. so she wears bad outfits. im sure we all have too once. just the world hasn’t seen it and put shit on us. leave her alone. would u like to all put your bad pics up here?? and let everyone poke shit at you? since when was a bit a flab unhealthy according to medical standards?? shes let herself go?? get over yourselves.

  • Southern Girl |

She isn’t overweight. Yeesh! Southern girls don’t look like the twigs in NYC and LA. And we don’t hear the guys complaining either.

  • Mel |

so because she doesn’t have a FLAT stomache she’s unhealthy? wow… guess I should stop looking at this site.. I thought it was a site to talk about people who were too skinny or wayyyy too big but I think Kelly looks better than the average person and DEFINITLY think she is a heathly role model because she is confident in who she is. who cares that her stomache and face are a lil bigger.. so what. she’s still better than the average american.

  • Nikkicicles |

What size do you guys think she is?

  • joy |

I personally don’t mind that she’s a little overweight, and sure, i think she could be a great role model. i think that it’s amazing that she’s doing so well regardless of her body shape, it says a lot about her dedication. So cheers!

  • lovedeniseh |

I don’t think she is overweight. I can see her hip bones! Maybe she just had a holiday and ate a lot of good food!(:

  • Cacee |

What is she? A size 8..maybe?!?! why do you have to be a size 2 to be healthy? I think it’s the close she choose to wear that make her look heavier. I don’t think she is unheathly. I would love to see you people that think she’s unhealthy because if you’ve got room to talk you must me tiny!

  • MMH |

Yah, she is pretty porky; and she’d better slow down before she does get into the ‘obese’ catagory! And,
wear clothes that actually fit her, not ones that fit last year!

  • b |

i totally agree. her wieght/dieting saga is totally unhealthy. she is like princess of yo yo dieting, not to be upstaged by the queen–Oprah. she is up and down and up again all the time. and bottom line overweight is not healthy. a healthy role model would be drew barrymore, jessica biel, heidi klum, etc

  • Holly J |

she is overweight and being overweight is not healthy!!!

  • foxie |

Shes from Texas, Im from Texas and we call that “corn fed”.

Shes got a big donkey ass. Somehow it just works for her….

  • lmd |

Thanks for clearing that up for me Tucker. I didn’t know the story behind it.

  • H |

She looks like she needs to lose a few pounds, but, honestly, she’s a far better role model than the stick-thin actresses, singers etc we normally see. I guess what she wants to say to the girls who look up to her isn’t so much ‘you should be the same weight as me’ as ‘you should be happy with yourself whatever weight you are’, which is a pretty good message if you ask me…

  • Lily |

I think she is using this “healthy role-model” spiel as a way to stay fat and not get hassled for it.

If she really wants to be a healthy role-model, she could definitely get into a bit better shape. I’m not saying lose weight, but tone up some of that flab at least.

  • Lily |

And I don’t see why she insists on wearing those awful, unflattering clothes…Is she trying to send a message that she’s comfortable with her body?

  • hailey |

those pants! are a major fashion violation - and SO unflattering and not helping the way she looks.

  • danielle |

WHAT THE F___K IS SHE WEARING?!?!?!!? WHAT’S WRONG WITH PPL!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD AND WELLL… AND SHE DEFF NEEDS A TEN..

  • Jessica |

this pic disgusts me. she is so overweight its repulsing. to think she once was thin and sexy with a number one song. sadly since america cares about the size of the singer before the talent, until she gets thin, she will never have a hit song again. she can NO WAY be a healthy role model until she gets healthy. she needs to eat 3 healthy meals, drink a lot of water, and steer clear from sugars and carbs and hit the gym. its sad that with all her money she cant buy a brain

  • Anonymous Realist |

Southern Girl - maybe the “guys don’t complain” because they don’t have the option?

  • Ashly |

okay.. she doesn’t look.. horrible… she isn’t obese.. her outfit makes her look kinda big. She shouldn’t wear shirts that are too short and show her love handles but honestly I don’t think she looks that bad. Her face shows evident weight gain but she doesn’t look that bad in my opinion…

  • Sarah |

Personally, I think she looks good. She doesn’t look skinny, she would look better if she lost a few, but considering how many people are obese these days her weight is not particularly unhealthy. I think she is a healthy role model in that she’s somebody to look up to who ISN’T stick thin or starving themselves. I bet she is healthier than most girls in Hollywood. After all, it is much more unhealthy physiologically speaking to be a little underweight than a little overweight.

She looks happy and smiley, and comfortable with herself, even though she is NOT very thin and THAT is beautiful and that is healthy. And I do think that makes her a good role model. Its not so much about how much you weigh but how you eat, if you eat healthy and exercise and are still a bit chubby, then thats most likely just your body type, and to be able to accept that is important.

Anyway, yeah, I think she looks gorgeous, yes she’s a bit on the large side, but at least she looks happy unlike people like Nicole Richie who walk around looking emaciated and miserable.

  • Tucker |

    ^^^^^
I completely agree on the happy part. I am not saying that people who eat healthily are unhappy, and people who stuff themselves silly are very happy. But someone who drugs it up and makes themselves throw up just to stay bone poppingly thin can not be very happe. Its all about a healthy medium.

  • mary |

I know this is going to sound really cruel, harsh, and superficial (and that’s not how I mean it…by the way)- but oh my God, really. That kind of image doesn’t sell in Hollywood. She doesn’t even look healthy. Bodies like Jessica Biel’s and Scarlett Johansson’s are healthy. They cleary work out but they also eat. THAT is healthy. Kelly Clarkson is probably trying to prove some point about not being the “ideal” skin-and-bone celebrity, but at this point she just looks lazy and she’s busting out all over the place. She doesn’t have to be (and she SHOULDN’T be) disgusting and anorexic, but she looks ridiculous and disgusting on a different level here.

  • Xti |

i think she’s one of those people who seems to think she can get away with wearing the same sort of clothes that she’s always worn no matter what her weight is. She doesn’t look anywhere near fat here it’s jsut unfortunate that she’s gained in her arms and she’s wearing a short sleeved top that will draw attention to it. Also if she got her jeans in the next size up. Is still think she’s really pretty but could look alot better if she wore more flattering clothes

  • hobnob |

i think she looks hot… hotter than longoria

  • Anon |

I don’t know one guy (except Tim Jones, who posts on this website) who DOESN’T think Kelly Clarkson is fat.

  • elise |

That “outfit” is just hideously unflattering. She is definitely on the heavy side but not by very much and I do believe it’s healthier to potray that kind of an image instead of the emaciated one that we’re getting from all over the place. More so, being a healthy role model includes a lot more than just looking a certain way.

  • Tucker |

she does look better than longoria

  • Banky Sinatra |

I wouldn’t go so far as to call her fat…

…I mean she’s not quite muffin-topping those (silly looking) pants, and she’s only got one chin, so no, clearly she is not fat.

Does she look as good as she could? In my opinion, no. What could she do about it? I’d say exercise a bit, or eat more healthy food (don’t eat less, just eat better).

Let’s be realistic here, she looks like the average North American young woman, the sad fact is that the average North American woman (men too, not a gender thing) is in terrible shape. Ask yourself honestly: Does she look like she could run around playing soccer for 90 minutes (soccer games last 90 minutes)? Does she look like she could jog for 20-40 minutes?

An average young person (with no underlying health issues) should be able to do those things, a better than average person should be able to do those things well or at least more comfortably.

Does she look fat? No. Does she look like she could benefit from better eating/exercise habits? Absolutely. Would better eating/exercise habits tend to improve her health thus improving her appearance? Yes.

  • sarque |

I don’t think she’s obese, and I doubt that her BMI is actually that high. She’s just not built like a stick. However, she could find some pants that fit and flattered her figure a little more. They’re just too small, which makes her look bigger than she is.

  • Koen |

Lovely curves she has. She should gain a little more and make her belly hang a little over her pants.

  • purpleplague |

She looks fine, she just needs to dress better for her body.

  • lindzz |

tes…how do u know kelly ‘runs on a treadmill’..do u have cameras set up in her house??..nobody gets that big eating healthily and exercising..the girl is clearly scoffing too much crap food

  • Tucker |

first off what the hell is scoffing?!
Kelly get’s lots of excercise. She has personal trainer that she kick boxes with a couple of times a week and when she is in L.A she runs on the beach all the time. And people can definetely be that size even if they eat healthy and excercise. We do know that if she really cared enough she could be a lot smaller as we have seen her smaller, but she must not care cause she looks healthy and happy too me.

  • sarah |

The outfit is so unflattering and looks too small which just makes her look fat. I don’t think she is a healthy role model because her weight yo yos all the time. I know weight does fluctuate but not on that scale!! Surely that is not healthy! It’s not her size so much she needs to tone up she looks flabby

  • Ely |

    honestly I think she’s fat..

  • Jenny |

I don’t think she is necessarily a ‘he
