Brittany Snow Once Had an Eating Disorder

^^^Brittany at the Hairspray premiere earlier this year
Here we go again… yet another celebrity is “coming out” about an eating disorder they had while they were a teen…
Brittany Snow, (from Hairspray and John Tucker Must Die), claims that she once thought dieting was her “best friend” and got down to 85 pounds at age 15.
It all started when she began work on the soap opera Guiding Light at age 12. Brittany noticed that most of the actresses on the show were on diets themselves. So she started a diet herself - the “Eat Right For Your Blood Type” diet. She lost about 10 pounds and immediately started receiving compliments.
Soon it became an obsession of sorts. Brittany couldn’t get enough.
“It kind of progressed into this thing where I needed to always be dieting and losing weight and more weight,” she says in the site’s interview series Half of Us, which addresses mental health issues and ways to get help. “It became my life and I didn’t have any friends and this was definitely my best friend and I held on to it really tight.”
At 15, Snow was stepping onto the scale 10 to 15 times a day and weighed only 85 lbs.
Brittany finally decided to get help after she started cutting herself. She admits it was a cry for attention but learned to deal with things after rehab.
OK… this is clearly a publicity stunt. I mean, who cares? It was over 7 years ago!
So who is next to come out of the “teen ED closet”? Anyone want to take a guess?
And for the record, it’s not that I don’t believe all these celebrities about their previous bouts of teen ED’s. After all, I don’t know any one person who isn’t eating disordered in some way or another. But why do they feel the need to come out about it years later? All it does is fuel young girls into wanting to copy or be like their idols, IMHO.

Yeah, i agree Rian. There is no need for celebrities to talk about health issues they may have had in the past. Its a personal thing. I can only imagine that the only reason they could do it is to get publicity, unless they are people who are actually helping the cause- i.e. jamie lynn from Sopranos.

It’s a good thing stars come out about their problems. It proves they’re not perfect. And it helps other people feel able to admit that they’re not either. I don’t think it’s a publicity stunt at all (in this case), and it’s HORRIBLE that people think that at all.

Snooze. Could she be any more generic? I think there’s a version of this chick on almost every block here in NYC. Wake me when she’s over.

I agree with Ramona. Whenever a star comes out about a past eating disorder they always get a lot of negative press.
I think the pressure to be skinny is pretty crazy in hollywood and perhaps stars talk about past problems to remind people how dangerous this pressure can be.

I definitely agree with you. All these actors and actresses seem to have had pretty messed up lives. They all seem to have had problems. Like not one of them lived a normal, healthy life? Please! I don’t buy it. She looks different in this picture. ALOT different than in John Tucker Must Die movie. I can’t believe that’s actually her!! Did she have surgery or something?

Ramona, that’s because every time another star comes about having “had” a eating disorder… it really offends us that auctally do struggle with one. It’s no joke, and not just that easy to shake. People who really have an ED typically have it all their lives, even those who have recovered. All these stars “comming out” about their past EDs are just looking for some media attention.
Jodi, I second you on the generic thing. That’s auctally the exact word that came to mind with this picture. Blonde hair, blue eyes, all-american cookie cutter.

Yawn. I agree. WHO CARES? Why don’t we hear all about celebrity teen acne the way we do about their alleged eating disorders? Lots of teens suffer from acne too, and would love to relate to someone. God. Get over it already.
By Violet on Sep 27, 2007 | Reply
Ha ha! Excellent, yes, why don’t celebs come out with their acne stories?? ‘My teen acne hell’, ‘My secret trouble with piles’, ‘Childhood asthma heartbreak’…I could go on - God it’s hilarious.
I think the thing with eating disorders is that it’s a very selfish and self-absorbing disease (I can say that honestly because I have one) and all you think about is your own pitiful existence - that’s why you feel the need to ‘come out’ and get all that sympathy. It’s just another way of making it all about you.
Very sad really.
By skng on Sep 27, 2007 | Reply
It may be a selfish disorder.. I agree, but it isnt something for those who have one, they want to share with everyone.. Anonomously, yes it is fine to talk, but up front it is deny deny deny…. I also agree that it will always be a struggle for those who have dealt with the issues of an ED previously, because it is something that will plague every single moment of ones life… eating in public, shopping (eating in general) getting dressed passing a mirrior looking and comparing to other people… Triggers.. oh my god there are so many and anything can become one…

Having an ED is *trendy* right now. That’s how deranged our world is. No one wants to admit they had massive nasty zits all over his/her face. It’s much cooler to say you were 85lbs. So pathetic. Also, I can see how this constant “ED confession” bullshit annoys some ppl who legitimately struggle with an ED. When you try to kick an ED you’re pretty much “in recovery” for the rest of your life, unlike Kelly Clarkson who said she had bulimia for 5 days and then said “No this is wrong I gotta quit”. God what a LOSER! That’s called a wanna be ED’er.

i admire people who can come forth with their stories, celebrities or otherwise. so i dont think it’s anyone’s place to tell her that she shouldn’t. some may think it is a publicity stunt, but i think she’s just taking the courage to address an issue that is a common one among her target audience. my first reaction to the article was… “i’m not alone.” so i would appreciate others to realize what it’s like for those who have to deal with the disease, and that she just wants to be able to relate to them and tell them that even celebrities (those we look up to) struggle with what we struggle with. so rather than jumping to conclusions that she is just doing this for publicity, it’s nice to think about what it’s like for people who deal with it.

Stars coming out about their EDs help other people with EDs realize that they can overcome it too. They’re trying to help, stop knocking celebrities who ADMIT to not being PERFECT! I’d much rather have an actress talk about her ED than try and say they’re naturally thin and eat hamburgers every day and don’t gain a pound, they just have a naturally fast metabolism!!! Shut up already! I think it’s very commendable of her to speak out, she has problems just like everyone else.
By Holly on Sep 27, 2007 | Reply
I don’t think people just “have” eating disorders and get over them. It’s a day-to-day struggle, even if manage to not engage in certain behaviors. I agree with the people who say it’s good to talk about - it doesn’t seem like this chick is glorifying it - it sounds like she said she realized she had a PROBLEM, and managed to get the courage to tell someone. If people do look up to her, or other celebrities and they have an ED, maybe they will attempt to get some help, or at least realize they aren’t alone. And people who don’t have EDs shouldn’t just assume that someone who suffers from one is shallow, because ultimately they have very little to do with your actual body.
By Slugs on Sep 27, 2007 | Reply
No, not an eating disorder. Maybe obsessive compulsive or attention grabbing. People with true eating disorders don’t just “get over it” like that.

I agree with Sasha. Is Brittany in her early 20’s?? She looks much older than her age. I thought she was at least in her 30’s. Yikes.

It really pisses me off when people say they got over a ED. As someone who has one, even though I am a lot better now, it is a everyday struggle, not some phase 4 attention that you go through when your a teen!! I agree with this post. I think stars shuold keep more of this shit to themselves, because girls idolize them and they thin, oh I can loose a lot of weight too, and one day I will snap out of it and be normal again. Nothings is ever the way it was again. It gets better, but never the same. I think I dislike this actress now.
By suzy on Sep 27, 2007 | Reply
OK, so she’s standard Hollywood issue, boring, agreed.
The interesting issue, is, should people “out” their problems, whether they be eating disorders, alcoholism, drug abuse, whatever.
Lots of recovery programs, including the 12-step variety (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anon, overeaters Anon) encourage people to be honest and forthcoming with themselves and others about their problem, as part of the recovery process. Also to help other people who may also be suffering. Most people do this privately, but people in the public eye may decide to reach out to a larger audience, because they can, and feel it is important to do so. They get kind of evangelical about it. So this so-called “publicity stunt” may very well be an honest attempt to stay healthy and follow her recovery program.
Also, I don’t believe she’s making it up. Her story rings true; the cluster of anorexia, cutting and general misery is fairly typical, and I don’t think she’s a good enough actress to fake it that well!!

Well usually I think these stories are BS and publicity stunts, but since she’s not actively promoting any new projects and it was part of an interview series about mental health this one seems pretty legit to me.
But back to the present, what’s up with her legs? They look really veiny and blotchy, like the legs of a woman twice her age. Maybe some toning exercises and a bit of bronzer (a bit, not orange paint) could help. lIke that spray on bronzer.

RE: whoever commented on her height.
According to IMDB.com, she’s 5′4″ now. So, it’s safe to assume that she was somewhere around that when she was 15, and at that height range, 85lbs is not healthy.
I dunno… I think I agree with those who say she’s too “generic”. But, who am I to trash talk? She’s the one making movies and TV shows, and I’m the one sitting at home watching her.

Usually I hate when celebrities ‘come out’ to having an eating disorder, because most times they don’t even know what they’re talking about (uhm, Ashlee Simpson saying she was anorexic and then her mom told her to eat steak and she for forgot about it), but from the sounds of it, Brittany Snow did have one.

As someone with anorexia, I don’t like it when “famous” people come out and say ‘10 years ago I had an eating disorder , went to therapy and got all better. It means more to me when someone is actually suffering with it NOW and is seeking help. Most teenagers, girls anyway, go through a time when they may lose weight, or make themselves throw up a few times and BINGO, they had an eating disorder–It’s chic to have an ed for a lot of young girls.
Not like that at all, at least not with me and the several people I know who continue to try to get more control over their lives.

Ummm… it’s not like she’s Ashlee Simpson and stopped eating for a week and called it an ED. The girl went to ED rehab. That can be 1-6 months of institutionalization and therapy. I know. I’ve been there. Maybe she is coming out, before someone else does it for her. Either way, I think it’s effed to call it a publicity stunt when there are stars like Keira Knightly walking around saying they are fine, and in the same breath calling themselves huge.

PEOPLE WITH TRUE EATING DISORDERS DENY, DENY, DENY IT!!! not only do i not talk about it with friends, family, my boyfriend, etc., but there’s no way in hell i would ever come out PUBLICLY about it! cry for attention is what it sounds like to me. they’re trying to make themselves seem more normal, but it is in fact insulting to peope who truly suffer because it makes it seem so generic and universal. i’m sure many of these celebs may have had eating issues due to the pressure of hollywood. i know, i lived there for over a year. but there is a difference between eating issues and an eating disorder.

Rian, people go to rehab for alcoholism, drug addiction, etc but not for eating disorders.
By RaisinGirl on Sep 27, 2007 | Reply
All people (including people with eating disorders) are different. Some people feel better when they confess/talk about their struggles, and some prefer to internalize.
I have an ed, but I don’t think I have the knowledge or authority to make blanket-statements about ALL eating-disordered people. Saying that a “real” anoretic would keep it all to herself isn’t a fair (or true) statement.
I think it’s pretty catty when people call others’ experiences with ed “cries for attention”… people who get all offended by Brittany Snow because she didn’t “truly suffer” the way that they did. I know it’s easy to get cynical about this, because there are confessions every other day, but do we need to add elitism to the mix??
By ~*bonez*~ on Sep 27, 2007 | Reply
Maybe she did truly suffer, it just seems so random for her to come out and tell about it after 7 years. Maybe we’re only getting a part of the story and she had a legit reason to bring it up, but I think the way it’s being handled makes it seem more like a right of passage for girls/women. It clearly is complex issue and I wouldn’t want to talk about my eating disorder in public, I don’t have a problem with stars going public, but I wish had been in a more relevant way.
By skng on Sep 28, 2007 | Reply
cecon, I dont understand how so many peiople have skewed ideas of what an ed actually is. It consumes every single minute of your life… “can I drink that coffee can I take that bite of food… how the hell am I sitting here with my family at the dinner table I want to be alone!” There isnt a moment of my day that I am not counting the calores I have consumed vs the ones I have burned and trying to hide it all. Trying to hide my body and my entire being to the public… Anonymity is a fantastic thing - there is comfort in my bones - and i know it is a sickness and it has been with me for 10 years! Even with help it is with me every single day. These people who are over it and public about it come across as fake and are absolutley claiming an ed for attention.. there is nothing attention worthy about it. Though it may give us some satisfaction with the your very skinny comments, in the end, nothing can make us content. It is a constant battle with yourself, and that may be the most difficult thing. There is no changing everything about who you have become. Years later the struggle is stil on.
By Girly Girl on Sep 28, 2007 | Reply
It sounds like some of the eating-disordered people here are saying you never really get better from an ED, that it is a struggle every day and it’s not something you can recover from.
I agree - in part. There will always be residual issues, but some people truly do stay in recovery and live normal lives. I was anorexic for 7 years and was in hell that whole time. I was in and out of hospitals, sure I’d never be “normal” again. However, I do live a pretty normal life now, and while I still have issues with my weight, my life is definitely not consumed by calorie counts. I wouldn’t even say I struggle that much. I have some days that are hard, but not many anymore.
So I think it’s possible that this young woman did find a better quality of life after going into treatment. No, it didn’t just disappear - but she found a way to deal with it.

Jodi:
It is wonderful having people who truly understand and sadly there are never people in person who can understand us. To be so consumed is one thing, to be alone and “in hiding” is another. Thank you for understading.
How strange it is to never have the freedom to stand up and say this is who I am - and it isnt that we are being stopped by others but it is too difficult to truly get it out there. I fear every day that I will see a child suffering what I have gone through. I am in my ealry 20’s and I have been battling myself since my early teens. There is nothing romantic or glamorous about it. It is all consuming as though I am drowning in it. I know there will be a light one day and I know there has been lights, but it is ones own mind that has to change.

I am not very familiar with Brittany Snow, but I don’t think she did this for publicity. I think that it makes sense for someone to want to be farther along in recovery before going public with their eating disorder struggles. I have an eating disorder, and I hate how self-absorbed completely obsessed it makes me. I would love to do anything I can to help others–either in prevention or education, or help for those who are suffering and already entrenched in behaviors and symptoms. I think you have to be somewhat healthy yourself before you can help other people, though…even though it can be a pretty easy way to try and shift the focus off yourself and what you might need to work on.
I admire her. I think perhaps she shouldn’t have mentioned the numbers–now people are going to compare (not going to lie–I did), but her heart seems to be in the right place.

I think I’d agree with skng for most part. And whoever said it was a selfish disease? No one wakes up one morning and says to themselves “y’know, I think I’ll give anorexia a try!” It’s a mental disorder that happens gradually and it’s painful and lonely. It’s so easy to judge people but unless you’ve been through it I don’t think you’d know.

i think it was absolutely the right thing to do. for one thing, she’s pretty clearly still recovering, and she only did day treatment like 18 months ago (she’s 21. that’s what long-term vitamin deficiency and self-tanner can do to your skin i guess). the other point is that she’s not promoting anything, she didn’t go on the today show; she sat down and gave a testimonial for a non-profit website geared at mental health awareness and advocacy for college-aged men and women. that jackass from fallout boy did one on bipolar disorder. I kinda wish you would post the website here (www.halfofus.com). it’s important. so often ED correlates with other potentially deadly mental health problems, they’re deeply related issues. she meant well, even tried to give advice (talk to a friend, take baby steps)

I can see how people who have never had any type of eating disorder could easily think that this is a publicity stunt, but there may be another explanation.
I too started “dieting” at the same age and got extremely sickly thin. I NEVER admitted it to friends and family…despite it being soooo obvious. I never got the help I so badly needed. I’m almost 23 now, and “it ” (food, weight/weight loss, etc.) has been on my mind 24/7 EVER SINCE. I am just now to where I will admit to some people that I use to “not really eat” or “crash dieted a lot”, but I did and still do have a true eating disorder.
My point, it NEVER goes away! I hardly doubt she is truly done with “it”. She is probably just where I am…where you still live in a mental hell but no one really knows because your not emaciated…at the moment anyway… I can see how admitting to having “had” an eating disorder “in the past” might help her to deal with the reality of it all, but I think it’s more of an effort to come to grips with how much her life was and still is affected by the whole thing
In all reality, the poor girl probably still suffers from the same obsessive thoughts and feels just the same about her body. She may have gotten well enough to stop severely starving herself…but chances are she has just moved to obsessive dieting (a life of hell minus the emaciated look) to keep her weight lower than is normal for her body.
As for the original comment of how it was “seven years ago” implying that it is in essence history…Yeah, seven years (same amount of time for me) is a long time to spend in a daily hell. Trust me she’s still living through it.
HOWEVER, I do agree that there is nothing to be gained by stars admitting to such things. They are best keep secret in efforts to decrease the potential of influencing others to experiment with the idea.
