How Katherine Heigl Stays Fit

As Katherine Heigl gets more and more popular, people are wondering how she stays in shape and what type of food she eats to stay slim.

Well, wonder no more… it appears that Katherine has jumped on the Harley Pasternak bandwagon. Like Jessica Simpson and several others, she trains with Harley and follows his 5-Factor diet.

This diet includes eating five small but nutritious meals per day. Each meal is supposed to contain a protein, a carb, a vegetable or fruit, a sugar-free drink and a healthy fat. You can read about the diet in detail here.

Katherine says she is not an uber-athletic girl and doesn’t want to be.

KH: I first said, “I’m never going to be — nor do I want to be — an uber-athletic girl.” It’s just not me and I don’t have that kind of discipline. He [Harley Pasternak] said, “I just want you to be healthy.” A lot of what we focus on is posture. I slump into myself when I get stressed. If I were going to play an action hero, I’d have to get that look. But I’d never maintain it. For me it’s never about achieving a look that’s impossible.

Well, whatever she is doing, it works. Katherine has appeared to maintain a fit, stable weight since the beginning of her stint on Grey’s Anatomy.

How does Katherine Heigl stay fit??? Lemme see, CIGS!

  3. Carrie | 24/10/07

If she really wanted to be healthy she´d stop smoking like a chimney.

  4. Kim | 24/10/07

Oh — and all the smoking helps too. Sorry, no role model there.

  5. katya | 24/10/07

    yawn, this girl sucks

  6. Johnny | 24/10/07

Yeah, that’s what I was going to say. Don’t even publish that she just wants to be healthy. Like all of hollywood they use cigs to stay thin. They’ll look great in the coffin!

  7. Jodi | 24/10/07

Oh no. We’re in for another batch of crap about smoking versus non-smoking. Someone (Edan?) please wake me when it’s over? Thanks.

  8. Em | 24/10/07

SHE SMOKES. that’s how she stays thin.

and healthy? you’ve got to be kidding me.

    ugh. she’s pathetic.

  9. Scottie | 24/10/07

She’s 5′8″..any guesses of the weight?

  10. jessica | 24/10/07

She doesn’t seem incredibly healthy to me. Not athletic, a smoker…not impressive. However, I do admire her for not dieting herself down to nothing, as seems to be the trend for women break-out stars.

  11. breads | 24/10/07

why call her pathetic just cause she smokes?
its not a crime, yes its a vile habit that is used by many women to stay thin but thats their choice, wrong as it may be
    i think she is beautifull
so what if she smokes,i dont have to kiss her nor breathe in the passive smoke so thats alright by me

  12. poops | 24/10/07

    How does she stay fit?

    She doesn’t.

  13. Jessica | 24/10/07

She’s hot. I love how she embraces her body. But she smokes? That’s a no-no.

  14. Lise | 24/10/07

    I`m with poops, she doesnt

  15. Alyssa | 24/10/07

HA… try she binges on food once a day and then smokes whenever she’s hungry.
    What BS…..

  16. Lenore | 24/10/07

It sucks that she smokes, but she is pretty regardless of the nasty habit. If I had to guess her wieght I’d say maybe 130.

  17. jamillah | 24/10/07

I’d guess 135ish for the weight

  18. BoBeffi | 24/10/07

Just because people smoke doesn’t mean they’re going to be thin… i see enormous people smoking all the time.

  19. parissucksliterally | 24/10/07

    by SMOKING and drinking COFFEE.

  20. Ivy | 24/10/07

    unlike her bag-of-bones co-star hahaha
(wow i am being evil today)

  21. Brit | 24/10/07

Jesus! Just because she smokes doesn’t mean she can’t try to eat healthy and work out. For all you superior beings out there who have never smoked, try to take into consideration that it’s not an easy habit to kick. What she does to her body is her choice. I’m pretty sure she knows how smoking effects her and if she wants to quit she’ll do it when she’s ready.

I don’t understand people that condems a someone because of a personal choice. If it doesn’t effect you then shut up about it.

  22. Lise | 24/10/07

    TSsskk
    Ive read the article.
Young girls who read this: its bullshit!
If you train or work out every day, you dont get around on 1300 calories a day!

  23. purrtykitty | 24/10/07

umm, yeah…and the idiot smokes, too - that probably helps more than anything. i’ll take my tips from stars that actually do things like work out, eat right and not do anything counter-productive to their health (that would be the smoking-thing if you didn’t already get it).

oh…and i realllllly don’t like her, so i don’t listen to a thing she says anyway.

  24. mem | 24/10/07

    130 guess weight

  25. Asuka | 24/10/07

Oh, Harley Pasternak… how I wish I could have you as my main ‘mo. I guess I’ll just have to settle for self motivation and jogging all alone!

Jealousy of Pasternak put aside, this woman bores me to death and I hate Grey’s Anatomy, so it doesn’t really matter to me whether she slims down or blows up. I hope I’m not alone in this sentiment and it goes to show that universal popularity is just not achievable ;)

  26. Cossey | 24/10/07

I like it when she smokes after sex!

  27. Tiff | 24/10/07

She is pretty, and has a nice shape. I wouldn’t call her healthy though, she smokes too much.

  28. elyse | 24/10/07

i don’t even think she has that great of a body– just big boobs, and in what she usually wears, they make her look completely untoned

  29. Charlize | 24/10/07

    According to imdb she’s 5′ 9″ (1.75 m) and not 5′ 8″.

But anyway she looks better than a couple of years ago I think.

  30. Spectra | 24/10/07

I was going to say “chain smoking” is how she stays thin. It’s a gross habit and it’s got to be one of the dumbest ways out there to stay thin. I’m pretty sure she barely works out…she can’t be uber athletic when she can barely breathe right. I know smoking’s a tough habit to kick, but it’s pretty hypocritical to say how healthy you are when you have a habit like that.

  31. ph3nix | 24/10/07

smoking does NOT make you thin. look at all the obese and overweight smokers out there.

smoking also does NOT render you unable to work out. i know many smokers (myself included) who do cardio regularly (marathons too!) and can climb 5 flights of stairs quicker than the chubby person in front of us who gets winded after the 1st flight.

    please quit the self-righteousness!

  32. Ella | 24/10/07

She’s not very toned, in fact she’s flabby. I was surprised when I saw her at the gym not too long ago. She’s really skinny with big breast and not as pretty without makeup and her hair done. Her head is huge. After working out I saw her outside with a cig. and diet Coke.

  33. carnap | 24/10/07

As I’ve said in previous posts, I’m not a smoker and I never have been. I also think smoking is unhealthy and smells bad.

However, bad reasoning makes me shudder. If a person does something unhealthy (e.g., smoking) why should it follow that the person is incapable of doing anything anything healthy (e.g., eating well and exercising)? If a person does something that is in some cases linked with appetite suppression, but in just as many if not more cases not linked with appetite suppression, why should it follow that the person is doing the thing to lose weight? If a person is photographed a few times doing something (e.g., smoking), and the photographs are shown to people who don’t interact with the person on a regular basis, why should those people assume the person does the thing she was photographed doing constantly (i.e., why should it be assume that the person is a chain-smoker)?

And finally, if a person is a Hollywood actor, why should anybody assume that that person has any duty to act like a role model?
There are a lot of public figures who devote their lives to doing good things, and almost none of them are film stars, pop singers, models etc.

  34. Lovinglife | 24/10/07

Umm sorry to burst anyone*s bubble- but you CANNOT be healthy and be a smoker. ask any doctor what the number one thing you can do for your health is and they will say: Quit smoking. Yes, it isn*t healthy to be obese/overweight either- in fact it can be deadly- but a doctor will always recommend quitting smoking before losing weight!

(and no i am not insensitive to smokers, it*s a personal choice, and those people shouldn*t be scorned, but the facts should be straight).

  35. lambman | 24/10/07

she is pretty fug without make-up, but has a great body!

People smoke, get over it she is ruining her looks and health, not yours

  36. yulya | 24/10/07

She does not look fit and she does not looks pretty. And who cares anyway.

  37. itsme | 24/10/07

Have never seen her in a bikini but she looks pretty darn good to me.

  38. carnap | 24/10/07

Lovinglife, I appreciate that you are not trying to be insensitive to smokers, so I won’t accuse you of insensitivity.

However, I have to accuse you of making dubious claims on the behalf of medical science. Can you refer us to a significant number of research articles in peer-reviewed which claim either, (1) You cannot be healthy and be a smoker; and/or (2) The number one thing you can do for your health is to quite smoking.

Much depends on how “health” is defined (and it is far from obvious that “the medical community at large” agrees on a definition). But we can make the case that the strong claims of (1) and (2) are dubious without even seriously debating the definition of health.

Consider the case of Bill and Fred:
Bill exercises regularly, prefers to walk instead of drive. He spends much of his free time outdoors, and likes to go to “the country,” for the fresh air. He enjoys food, and eats when he is hungry, and stops when he is full. His diet consists mostly of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and a moderate amount of meat. He avoids processed foods. He doesn’t do drugs and rarely consumes alcohol. He has a fulfilling career, and good relationships with family and friends. He considers himself happy. Bill is a moderate smoker.

Fred hasn’t exercised in as long as he can remember. He drives everywhere. He lives in an very smoggy city, and so avoids going outdoors when possible. His job is very stressful and he works long hours. He is terrified of getting fat, and often skips meals. When he does eat, he eats processed food, usually “diet” food: low-fat/low call micro-wave dinners, low-fat ice-cream and cookies, baked potato chips. In times of indulgence, he eats non-diet fast-food (McDonalds), etc. He drinks heavily. He has strained relationships with family and friends. He considers his life stressful and overwhelming. Fred is a non-smoker.

I know many people who are more or less like Bill. I know many people who are more or less like Fred. Many of the people like Bill seem to me to be relatively healthy. The people like Fred seem unhealthy. Does my conception of health fly in the face of medical science?

We all know that smoking, like some other habits, is not conducive to good health. Say the foregoing and no one will disagree. But it is hard to take seriously ludicrous claims about smoking made (falsely) on behalf of medical science.

  39. ph3nix | 24/10/07

    carnap, you are awesome.

  40. Sian | 25/10/07

    That’s right carnap, show ‘em!

  41. Joelle | 25/10/07

It’s common knowledge among Hollywood that nobody really does this diet. Harley pays publicists and tabloids to say they do. What a load of shit! If Katherine Heigl relaly did this diet she would be a lot slimmer than she is now.

  42. Joelle | 25/10/07

Yes, carnap, but Bill will die of lung cancer at 45 and Fred will live a long and obese life until 55 at least.

  43. Elle | 25/10/07

I’d say she is somewhere betwen 130-135.

  44. Jensen | 25/10/07

Saw pics. of her in a French tabloid wearing a bikini, they only published the decent ones. The outtakes were surprising, she has cottage cheese thighs and the flattest ass. Like someone else said, she’s all boobs. Her body is untoned and not sexy.

  45. C | 25/10/07

    Who cares, stupid post.

  46. FW | 25/10/07

she still smokes and she is claiming to want to be healthy? - whatev - i like this “diet” because it’s a healthy way to eat for the rest of your life - it is good for the body and good for the mind so you don’t get “food issues” - plus it’s an equal emphasis on eating properly and exercising healthily - you don’t cut out a major food group and you don’t spend 5 hours in the gym - i sound like a spokesperson - i’d totally do this plan - the results of Jessica Simpson and the others in the article are amazing

  47. Jensen | 25/10/07

C you talking about my post?

That’s the kicker though, Jessica and Heigl did not need to lose weight to be begin with.

  48. carnap | 25/10/07

It is news to me that every person who has every smoked has died of lung cancer.

I don’t remember Fred being obese. It is news to me that the only side-effect of living under the “unhealthy” conditions described in the case of Fred is obesity.

I understand that this is a website concerned with body image. However, many people here seem to think of health as defined by external conceptions of bodily health (thinness vs. fatness). And occasionally some apparent “evil” to health (e.g., smoking) is mentioned. External conceptions of bodily health are to some extent indicative of health, and smoking is bad, but health is just much, much more complicated.

  49. C | 26/10/07

No Jensen … No, i wasnt aiming it at you.

  50. kate24 | 5/11/07

Wow, you guys are brutal. Sure, smoking is a very dangerous, horrible addiction but you are condemming an entire person because of one danger, unhealthy habit. No one is perfect and Even though smoking is an appetite suppressant, it is quite a stretch to assume that she “binges whenever and them smokes when she is hungry. ” She should quit for her health but for now, she is a beautiful person and a positive role model defying hollywood’s unhealthily skinny ideal. Yes she should quit but she is a real person and therefore has flaws and has an addiction that will be difficult to overcome,

    carnap,

I dont care what you say, you cannot be healthy as a smoker. that’s ludricous. I always thought smokers were stupid for. Why would you purposely harm your body and risk getting cancer? you blood pressure goes up as soon as you become a smoker. Dont get me started on your poor lungs. :(

Also, there are so mandy side effects when taking medicine due to smoking. You risks haveing blood clots and heart attacks. its just a stupid thing to become a smoker. It smells, tastes bad, and it makes you sick. My friend just passed away from lung cancer; it went to his brain!
