Andrea Muizelaar Speaks About Modeling And Anorexia
Category: Celebrity Eating Disorders, Supermodels
Some of you may or may not recognize this name… Andrea Muizelaar was the winner of the 2006 Canadian’s Next Top Model. Just a few days ago, she opened up in an interview and talking a little about the anorexia she developed on her way to becoming a famous top model.
She claims that she first developed anorexia after losing 20 pounds right before officially becoming a model. After that, she used her career to “hide” her eating disorder.
The entire interview can be found here - make sure to go read it. It is very interesting and Andrea is very candid about her thoughts on the relation between anorexia and the modeling industry.
MH: Is that when you first became anorexic?
AM: Yes - I lost 20 pounds that summer and then starting losing my control and modelling became my new excuse for this weight loss and soon-to-be disorder.
MH: Who did you look up to on that show?
AM: All the contestants on the show, minus the plus size girl because I knew modelling was all about thin and not regular people.
MH: […] Do you think Tyra Banks picks the bigger models for “good TV” instead of actually succeeding in modeling?
AM: Absolutely - has any of them ever won yet? …or come close?
MH: After the Pantene photo shoot, at panel, all the judges criticized your weight, specifically that you didn’t weigh enough, and you later became defensive and said you ate well. This was interspersed with an interview from Alanna who said she never saw you eat a full meal the entire time you were in the house. The mantra quickly became “Andrea, you need to eat!” Now my question is, do you feel that they truly cared about whether you ate or not, and do you think that mantra was just an excuse to go, “Well, I did say she needed to eat…”?
AM: They obviously did not care as I ended up winning the show and only ate dinner with everybody once.
What do you all think?

attentionwhore
attention wh*re
I think they are are all anorexic for very few people naturally have bmis of 15 however there always are a few exceptions but what about 5 to 10 % of the population thats it
Wow, she sounds so stuck up!
i feel sorry for her, but her honesty is a little too ostentatious.
She was a raving bitch who failed miserably in the actual modelling world. These statements don’t surprise me at all.
Why do people have to put FIRST! were talking about skinny people, not whos first. We know your first and it doesnt matter.
Anyways good for her actually being open about how Americas next top model uses thicker women for the appeal that they might actually win, but they never do. Its just not part of being a supermodel.
she sounds like a stupid bi…tchhh !
Uhm, I just take it for granted that models/actresses starve themselves to look “good.” That’s why they weigh, on average, 20% less than the typical woman. We have been calling it anorexia the last 20 or so years–but I think this has *always* been going on. The difference in the past was that women knew that models were models, and there was no expectation that the typical chick was going to look like one. We live in a culture now where EVERYONE is supposed to be fabulous all the time.
Anyway, Tyra can kiss my arse. I’m sorry, she is overweight and lies about it and acts like she promotes healthy body image when she doesn’t. FAKE. None of those bigger girls are ever going to be a model–even in the world of modeling there is like maybe 1-3 plus size models out there who can live on what they make.
Yikes. It makes me sad that (almost) all the comments so far have been negative towards her.
I really enjoyed her interview. Good on her.
I was negative towards her because she was rude her entire interview. I do feel bad for her and her disorder but she doesn’t have to trash plus size models.
i think she sounds like a BITCH!
I didn’t even know there was a Canadian’s Next Top Model.
Wow the interview is really interesting. I love how candid and honest she is. Good for her for getting healthy and getting out of that environment.
well she is right.
its true, you’ve gotto be skinny if you wanna be a runway model, period.
and i totally agree with her on the tyra banks question
skinny time: How was she rude the entire interview?? She was just honest.
And she did not trash plus size models! She just said that the industry is obsessed with extremely thin women so she knew they’d pick a thin girl not a plus size one. A plus size girl still hasn’t ever won NTM.
never heard of her. but i belive the stuff she says about the industry. and a lot of the people in it are rude, bitchy and envious.
ostentatious? eh?
infact i felt she seemed very down to earth
so the fashion industries is built on prejecting false images and lifestyles, it has always been this way, once those girls mature maintaining such small figures on women so tall doesn’t come naturally but thats what they get paid for, it’s up to them to decide how much they value their health/well being or career
her comments on twiggy were so true, being as thin as possible has always been around since the 20’s,30’s, 40’s (could be the result of rationing who knows)
i believe coco chanel, givenchy (basically designers) had more of an influence than twiggy on today’s idealised body shape in fashion
ugh… nevermind. It was my OPINION
I liked the interview, and think that she sounds grounded. Good for her for recognizing her health problems and getting help. She sounds like a strong person now that she’s overcome her anorexia. I think anyone considering modeling should read this interview, it’s on target.
she seems to have a superior attitude…bitch
Wow. If you ask me, she sounds brutally honest in the interview - not “stuck up” or “ostentatious”. I also think the interviewer posed a lot of questions that led her to make some pretty harsh statements. But if that was the truth, then so be it.
Regardless, I’m glad she survived to tell her story AND to get help. That’s one less dead model we’ll see on the news in the next few years…
Thin is in haha…
o_O whoa. I do hope the second season’s winner gets treated better.
A Canadian spinner!!
fat to thin and angry. Typical. I dont think she seems stuck up. Just bitter about something she thought would be easy.
Tyra is so fake I hate it. People really need to get over the thin models. You can be that thin and be healthy if you know what you are doing. It just takes working out and calorie watching. NOT just starving yourself to death.
I actually watched the show and always thought that Andrea was majorly anorexic, she even had excessive hair on her arms which the judges critizised and that is sign of severe underweight, because your body tries to warm up itself. She denied her problem then but she talks about it now, so-good for her.
On another note: Tricia Helfer, who hosted the show then definitely deserves attention from this page in my opinion. Post something about her!
I’m going to disagree with you there Chop-Chop.
Sure, healthy eating and exercise can get you “in shape” or “lean” or what have you, but that doesn’t mean it will get you into a size 0. Everyone is different..
there’s a group on facebook about her, from waht I’ve seen she seems pretty nice but I geuss you never know, It’s pretty interesting. Just search her name and you’ll find the group. She talks about her anorexia and how she’s a lot healthier/happier now, with pictures.
i don’t think she sounds stuck up at all. Clearly she had an eating disorder and that was her mindset. That’s the whole fashion industry’s mindset as well.. and thank god she didn’t sugarcoat any of her feelings.
I’m avoiding saying “you guys” because I know it is different people in every post and I don’t have the space in my brain to keep up with it, so:
The people on this website continually bitch about and berate people for not admitting to eating disorders that they ASSUME famous people have. Here’s a girl who says HEY, you’re right, I DO have an eating disorder and you’re complaining that she’s using it for publicity? What, exactly, should a skinny person do?
Just because someones honest dosnt make them a bitch, yesss.
I think I’ll go searching youtube for the first season of CNTM before I make up my mind.
I kind of agree with her critique of the American version of the show though. I don’t believe for a minute it is a serious competition.
Without knowing what went down in the show and whether or not her experience is true, it’s really hard to not think she sounds very bitter. Question is whether she’s justified to be bitter or not.
honestly she just sounds a little vain and one of those types that is proud of having an eating disorder. Notice how she tries (and fails) to blame it on the show, but admits everybody from the pannelists to the other contestants told her to gain weight.
And with the plus size thing, honestly, most Top Model contestants dont have model proportions, especially the plus size girls…and the few that did have the right propotions just werent that good. Tocara had a gorgeous face and body, and I think ended up in 4th or 5th place, but pretty as she is she absolutely didnt have plus size model proportions
She is a naive girl who didn’t know what she was getting into - all her complaints about the industry are standard of the industry itself!!!! Skinny and tough - that’s how it is! If you don’t like it, don’t work in it! Get over yourself, get smart and blame yourself!
It’s CANADA’S Next Top Model, not Canadian’s - that makes no sense.
Anyway, she is on her way to being a dental hygenist now, what a dork.
Well i’m guessing her thinness made up for her amazingly unstriking face.
im sorry byut the last part is right, if they cared, they wouldnt have picked her…
1) she sounds retarded, and 2) it doesn’t matter how much weight she lost, because she’s still ugly. If I headed a modeling agency, I would rather have someone who weighed more and had a less scary face.
I think that she is more UNatractive then most plus sized models…I say ewww and for her to trash them looks pretty bad on her part ‘’i am a anerexic and I want to make all the other models out there [including the plus sized ones] look like a grose stick bug too” ……let adrianna lima [or someone who atleast looks human trash the plus sizers] NOT this anarexic!
Ugh. She talks way too much. She’s so annoying, seriously. I was so mad when she “won” all she did was WHINE through the whoe season.
I remember when the other girls on the show found all sorts of sweets in plastic bags under her bed. That was really weird, because it was a huge amount.
So then it became clear to me she had an eating disorder and if the staff of the show was the slightly bit informed, they could have signaled it and advise her to go to get help and erase her from the show.
But hey, that is not how life works. She was the only model material there. Whatever sells for the show…
I personally think she comes across as lame in that interview.
How so? Fact - models have to be very thin. Fact -most of them do this and survive - look at Janice Dickinson, 52, 2 kids, and still slim and spunky. Fact - she (Andrea) couldn’t maintain that and developed a dangerous eating disorder.
It’s like me, being lazy as I am, trying to be an athlete than slamming athletics and all sport just because I went crazy for short period and got injured or something!!
She tried to be something, failed at it, and now it’s the bad guy, because she’s slamming all fashion there, saying it has no good qualities, and sorry for the rant but that is just her own bitter sour grapes speaking IM(not so humble)O.
She’s honest. Good on her.
She’s not being rude or bitchy, just merely stating the truth…something people rarely hear these days in the media.
She was a bit irritating. I only watched a couple shows of CNTM. I remember they opened her suitcase and all it contained was candy. *cringe*
Remember back on the Jaslene Gonzalez post, when people said that the cameras follow you everywhere and you couldn’t possibly get away with having an eating disorder because Tyra would “know”?
Remember when I responded that Tyra was a fame-whoring idiot and most of those girls have the same IQs as shoe sizes and probably couldn’t tell an eating disorder from a cat?
TA-DAA!!!
janice dikinson is alot more than slim and spunky, she isn’t the role model to use in the modeling industry
drug addict, alcoholic, slept with more men than i can recall, her face is is nothing nice to look at and she still obessed over remaining thin, i remeber her attitude to being thin as possible on ANTM
i can’t think of one super model who went through modelling and is not messed up apart from tyra banks and she wasn’t there for very long, karen elson perhaps? lets see what agness deyn does
the small ones nobody knows about might do ok, but the big names tend to have someting messed up eventualy
What a candid interview. I think she came across as a little stuck-up but I think she was just being honest. She’ll soon learn that you can’t do that when you’re in the public eye. Aside from that, am I the only one who is tired of all these skinny, tired looking women on the catwalk? I love a skinny model as much as the next woman (they look great in clothes) but I would like to see a few ‘radiant beauties’ among them, not a long line of desperate, sad-looking starved girls.
breads, I’ve read an interview with Karen Elson talking about how she had severe ED when her career first skyrocketed, so I don’t think she qualifies as “not messed up”. (love her though. and Erin O’Connor)
Good interview, very honest with no frills.
I have a problem with women who refer to themselves as “beautiful”. That, she may be, but she certainly is not humble. There’s a fine line between honesty and bragging and, in my opinion, she crossed it a few times in this interview.
well she obviously looks underweight and it’s maddening that the judges said she was too skinny yet she was still crowned the winner!
Amercia’s Next Top Model winners get skinner every year - Jaselene is the worst/best example of how the judges just don’t care about anorexia and actually encourage it - Jaslene won and then the next year Tyra decorated the house completely in Jaslene pictures - she always had a mix of contestants and past winners in the houses before - which clearly sends the message to the girls on the current season that Jaselene is what she wants them to look like - size 0
When I read the few questions that Rian posted, I thought this girl seemed stuck-up, but after reading the whole interview, I liked her. She seemed bitter that her illness and the industry took so much life out of her, and I don’t blame her, but she couldn’t possibly have thought a bunch of hungry models were going to be sweet and friendly.
Bitter, table for one.
Lorra - what are you talking about?
a) She’s studying Business Administration
b) Since when are dental hygenists dorks?!
am I the only one here who thinks that her looks are actually below average?! she looks sick and her face isn’t all that fortunate!
Edan,
I was one of the people defending Jaslene. My point at that time was that if someone was bulimic, the sound guy would hear them throwing up, if what Elyse said was true and they were mic-ed in the bathroom. I know when I am sick and puking, it makes noise. If they aren’t mic-ed in the bathroom, then I could see them getting away with it. I think i also said that if someone wasn’t eating (ie anorexic), the other girls would notice. Which apparently did happen here. Two problems with this: you can’t force someone who is your equal to eat, and not every person who doesn’t eat a ton has an ED. I know lots of people who just aren’t too concerned with food- meaning they only eat when they’re hungry, and then stop when they aren’t hungry anymore.
I certainly wasn’t trying to assert that the girls on these shows are so bright they’d be able to uncover some great mystery. My favorite example of this is the girl who was supposed to play anti-meat, and she asked “What, like I hate the meat?” or something along those lines… don’t remember the cycle.
Sorry for the rambling. My point is when I puke it makes noise, and they live in very close quarters with one another…
If you have learnt the ‘art’ of not having to stick your fingers down your throat in order to be sick, it is very easy to throw up without making any noise.
With regard to the story, she seems fairly honest to me but perhaps a little bitter for some reason, but then, maybe she has GOOD reason.
Oh man, Violet. That’s depressing. *Hug*
I understand what you’re saying, Andrea. I think the thing I found irritating was that even though this girl “Alanna” was “telling her to eat” and it was obviously videotaped that she had a suitcase full of candy, instead of a producer or the like stepping in to get the girl some help, the destructive behavior won her the competition.
I don’t mind the show, but I think it glorifies some pretty rotten sh*t.
RainbowSprite, I agree with most of what you’ve said. There are many people pursuing this career and they might not be cut for it.
At least not *at this moment * when the fashion industry favors girls on the thin side. But the lure of fame, a high paying and easy job and glamour makes young women give up everything in order to pursue such goals.
It seems like this poor, misguided girl thought she kept her end of the bargain by abiding to the industry’s standards and, when results were not achieved, she finally realized that it was not going to be enough to break into the modeling industry.
Btw, I still couldn’t find CNTM’s 1st season on youtube. Should I go through the trouble of purchasing the dvds? I wouldn’t mind watching it even if I already know who the winner is
Violet’s right. I was bulimic for 2 years and after a while the food just comes up automatically and silently.
Andrea Muizelaar is pretty but skinny. I like her interview. You know, models always starve themselves to look “wonderful” That’s why they are much thinner than the average women. But I think that’s bad for their health. It seems that she has recognized her health problems and has done something good to overcome her anorexia. I found a book “Anatomy of Anorexia” at dealstudio.com, It offers a panoramic view beyond most medical treatises and personal accounts on Anorexia. I think anyone considering modeling should read it.
honest and ruse are completely different she did have a bitchy type tone in the interview
BLEH! I remember watching CNTM season 1 and she was my least favorite contestant. All she did was fucking whine and complain, and cry. She was extremely annoying and seemed immature, like she didn’t act her age, she acted like a 12 year old.
And THEN… after winning CNTM, she says she doesn’t like it and goes back to working in dentistry. For fucks sake, this girl drives me crazy, I hate the way she talks during this interview, like she has overcome so much just because she was bullied in school. *sigh*
I really cannot stand this girl. Sorry for the rant. ^^
1) I’ve got to agree - attention whore.
2) Too skinny, unattractive, shouldn’t have won CNTM.
3) She was unhealthy, with all the crap she ate (& didn’t eat) - SHOULDN’T have won.
What a bitch, talking shit about Tyra.
It’s not true that ANTM contestants aren’t successful, they’re just not that famous. Clearly jealous.
I watched the whole season and hated her. She is an idiot.
i told you bout this months ago she posteda thing on facebook.
and for you saying stuck up blah blah shut the bhell up shes a nice girl ive talekd to her and im glad shes teleling ppl about this
doesn’t seem stuck up, but def. seems like sour grapes. Who disses Jeanne Beker and thinks she can still have a career? That woman is CONNECTED. Andrea seems okay in the series, I always kind of liked her. But She just sounds like a naive little child, begging for any scrap of attention possible. She failed at modelling, and is just trying to say “Ha! Well, I didn’tw ant to anyways!”
Good for her recovery though, I’m really happy about that. SHe looks a lot healthier now.
i could care less what she says or doesnt say. me likes her skinny body
I am friends with Andrea… I didn’t realize this article was on here until now. She is actually an inspiration for all girls. She came into my classroom to speak with my students about her experience. She opened their eyes to the reality of the industry…. and they learned so much from her. She is not a bitch at all in any way shape or form, she would do anything to help people overcome their eating disorders. Her story is true and if you saw her now you would realize she is living proof that you can get out of it. She looks AMAZING now because she is happy and healthy
Wow she is irritating…she needs help with her eating disorder or at least try to say something to help others suffering with eating disorders. She should not have won if she was going to be so dishonorable and blatantly disrespectful about everything.
i KNEW she had an eating disorder when i saw that episode of canada’s next top model when they [two of the other contestants] found a suitcase that belonged to her filled with sweets. lots and lots of sweets. literally nothing but sweets. a whole suitecase. that raised alarm bells for me straight away and i was shocked neither of the two girls were able to put two and two together. no one has a sweet-tooth that desperately. i may be wrong, of course. correct me if im wrong
well frm what I just read on this page she seems to have a serious stick up her butt. Anorexia is NOTHING to F around with. It is not just physically damaging but mentally and emotionally damaging as well.
If starving is thought as beautiful then why aren’t there pics of starving children from third world countries on the covers of magazines!!
I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
