Keri Russell On Her Baby Weight

Written on December 7, 2007 – 1:42 pm | by Rian |

The latest issue of Self Magazine is running an interview with Keri Russell. They only briefly discuss her baby weight and body issues in general, and I only scanned in that page of the interview.

Keri claims to be naturally thin and says she hasn’t really worked overtime to lose the baby weight, despite what tabloids have speculated recently. Here are some highlights from the interview:

Q: What was the secret to getting your body back so quickly?
A: “I stayed really physical during my pregnancy. I stuck to my normal prepregnancy workout, minus the stomach exercises and twisting. I really felt it helped my whole well-being. Ideally, I’d do pilates, usually on the reformer, for an hour every other day. And I walked almost every morning in this hilly park near our apartment.

Q: Have you lost all the baby weight already?
A: “I think I gained around 25 pounds. I haven’t lost it all, but I feel good about the way I look.”

Q: Have you changed your diet at all?
A: “It’s hard to sit down and make a perfectly healthy meal with a baby who needs constant attention, so for breakfast, I put him in the sling and walk to the coffee shop, where I get eggs, toast and salad. At home, I just wolf down whatever I can find while he’s sleeping.”

You can see the full Q & A’s here.

The only confusing thing is that Keri seems thinner now than before she got pregnant… so I wonder why she doesn’t think she has lost the baby weight already? And this interview was done only three months after she gave birth, which is pretty fast to lose 25+ pounds. Does she not realize this or is she hiding something?

…This doesn’t seem truthful. First of all, only gaining 25 lbs. during pregnancy is rare, so she must have been working pretty obsessively to not gain at least 35, which most people do {and that is the low end}.
Losing 25 lbs. in three months isn’t that hard after having a baby, the first 20 kind of come off by themselves. But I really don’t believe she’s doing it walking to a cafe to eat toast {carbs!} and eggs {uh, with yolks and fried in grease, that’s the way they make ‘em in my city}.
Wolfing down whatever she can sounds realistic with a baby. But doesn’t jibe with a healthy diet mentality.
It sounds like she is saying what every other celebrity says, ie “I eat what I want and don’t go to the gym and yet I’m magically thin 3 mos after giving birth.” Uh huh.
Give me Tori Spelling any day! At least she’s honest about what it takes to lose babyfat.

Oh, and she’s an absolute liar, too.

She has always been thin even when she was first starting out. Which makes this seem realistic. Some people dont have to work that hard. They suck. JK
She looks great though. Absolutely gorgeous always.

Wow, everyone’s got some strong opinions against this girl. The thing is, I don’t think anything she said seems implausible. If you look at pics of her when she was promoting Waitress, heavily pregnant, you’ll see she didn’t gain too much weight, so 25 pounds seems about right. Then, just having a baby takes of about 15 or so pounds between the weight of the baby, amniotic fluid, and water retention. So let’s say she lost 10 pounds in three months. That wouldn’t have been too difficult, particularly if she had been, as she said, working out throughout her pregnancy. Toast with eggs might not be so bad, either–keep in mind, if you breastfeed, that burns 500 calories a day.

  8. By parissucksliterally on Dec 7, 2007 | Reply

she didn’t gain a lot pf weight during pregnancy, which makes it a lot easier to lose it.

  9. By Ally on Dec 7, 2007 | Reply

I think she’s naturally pretty thin and GORGEOUS!! She’s always seemed very little to me.

It doesn’t say anywhere she’s eating fried eggs! Protien is really good for you first thing in the morning, 2 eggs only have 140 calories and a slice of multigrain toast and salad (at breakfast??) with that is a 400 cal at max breakfast. Pretty darn reasonable if you ask me. She’d probably burn that off during the walk and pilates. Also if she’s breastfeeding that burns a lot of calories as well I believe.

It is not hard to *only* gain 25 lbs. while pregnant. I gained 18 lbs. with my son and he was 8 lbs. 4 oz. at term. I didn’t eat a lot of junk food. I ate healthy food that my baby needed and a bit more than I would eat if I were not pregnant. I slacked off a bit with my DD (had a huge craving for shrimp lo mein throughout pregancy), but I still gained just 25 lbs. Also, you lose at least 15 lbs. right off the bat within the first week of having the baby. Half of the 25 lbs. is baby + placenta. Then there is weight because of increased blood volume. If you stay within 25 lbs. or under, you will have very little actual *fat* to lose after birth. What does change for a lot of women is how you fit into your clothes. Sometimes your bones shift to accomodate the growth (ribs, pelvis), and sometimes they don’t shift back :( So you may not be able to wear the same size, even if you do get back to pre-pregnancy weight.

i saw her before she was pregnant in person and she wasn’t that thin. 25 lbs during a pregnancy doesn’t seem like much, i could see losing that in a few months, esp with the baby itself being most of that weight.

Hm. Not sure what to think about this story. She’s never appealed to me but I must say she looks great.

And Amma, what’s wrong with toast and an egg (which by the way, she could probably get poached). Doesn’t sound that bad to me..

Even if she had to lose the full 25 lbs, that’s only 2 lbs per week. Take into account the 15-25 lbs you lose giving birth, and it doesn’t seem unreasonable. She’s always been thin. I’m not smelling a scandal here.

  17. By alicia on Dec 7, 2007 | Reply

I totally KNOW it’s plausible. I only gained 20-25 pounds with both my pregnancies, I walked during both of them, like 3-5 days a week. That was all I did and watched what I ate, I ate little junk food, but did have Taco Bell cravings…..
I lost only 12 pounds immediately and the rest fell off within I’d say 3 months. With my second pregnancy I gained only 20 pounds and was back in my jeans in like 8 weeks I think. I just was lucky that my belly stayed relatively small and I had a long pelvis to put a baby in. I’m 5′7″ and weighed around 121 before my first child and around 115 before my second. And that’s the truth. Now I weigh around 120 and my youngest is 3.

i cheated off webMD, which recommends 25-35 lb gain for average women:
    Baby 8 pounds
    Placenta 2-3 pounds
    Amniotic fluid 2-3 pounds
    Breast tissue 2-3 pounds
    Blood supply 4 pounds
Fat stores for delivery and breastfeeding 5-9 pounds
    Uterus increase 2-5 pounds
    Total 25 to 35 pounds

All of this would go away on its own except breast tissue and the 5-9 pounds of fat. With any amount of activity and diet she could easily lose everything but her boobs in a few weeks. suddenly pregnancy doesn’t sound so terrible! except the hemorrhoids… and the vomiting…

She looks fabulous! Working out during pregnancy is really helpful, and breast feeding burns a ton of calories.

Plus, I swear it’s easier to lose in NYC because you walk EVERYWHERE, which definitely burns calories too.

I really don’t think this is suspicious as everyone seems to think.

  24. By MANDOLIN on Dec 7, 2007 | Reply

Anyway, it’s fine and normal to gain 25–you only need 300 addtional calories per day when you’re pregnant. Also, if you’re active it’s great and helpful. Being pregnant doesn’t give you an excuse to blow up and/or eat complete sh*t for nine months.

Ummmm actually alot of people only gain 25 lbs. It’s only rare…in the Midwest maybe. I gained 27lbs, but my doctor only thought I’d gain 30lbs at the most (I’m average in terms of weight). My baby was small though. My friend gained 20lbs and she was on the thinner side, her baby was 7 and a half pounds. So if you don’t go hog wild you can gain under 30lbs. If I do it again, I’ll probably gain 30lbs so my baby will be a little fatter to begin with. Everyones body is different!

i’ve seen her in person (about 5-6 years ago, obviously before she had her baby). she’s really tiny - small framed, small boned, short, just really petite all around. so i don’t think she’s hiding anything. women aren’t supposed to deviate THAT much from their pre-pregnancy eating and exercise habits while they’re pregnant. it certainly does not give you license to eat for two full-grown adults. she did what she was supposed to do, and that’s why she’s not a lardass. :)

Personally I respect her for saying “I’m just naturally thin and maybe other people aren’t”. I think it’s more damaging for super thin celebs who get that way by starving themselves to say that they do it through “diet and exercise” than it is for them to just say “this is how I am”. The former implies that looking that way is actually attainable for everybody when it is really not and that’s what leads people down dangerous paths with eating disorders. If more people understood that there is a self-selection bias that comes with being a super thin and gorgeous celebrity I think they’d be better off. I’d much rather hear someone tell people “yes I look like this, and no, you couldn’t possibly, so just do what works for you and don’t waste your time or make yourself sick trying”

I gained 45 pounds with my twins and had lost 35 a week after the birth. As several people stated, a lot of the pregnancy weight is water, placenta, plus the baby(ies). After two months, I was back to my usual size, without exercising other than walking, nursing, and taking care of two babies, and with a normal diet. I am nowhere near as thin as Keri, but I completely believe that she got back to normal within a short period of time. What is amazing is how flat her stomach seems to be!

she probably only had 5 or 10 pounds of fat to lose, which is completely healthy and normal for a pregnancy. three months is a reasonable amount of time to do that.

this is one of those girls that I think are very lucky, those that just stick to her ordinary rutine and diet while they are pregnant and do not gain much weight,
and if she seems thinner it could be because breast feeding and actually taking care of a baby (not like other stars) are really exhausting.
So just because you don’t have a good metabolism doesn’t mean that everybody (though many do) is just going trough a crazy and strict diet.

A lot of women nowadays only stay on top of their weight with difficulty, and then they use pregnancy as an excuse to totally pig out, which is understandable really because it’s the only time you’re sort of expected to eat whatever you fancy, on a whim.

But I bet mums in say 1800, who worked hard all day caring for their households and didn’t have limitless access to calorific tasty food, had a return to their pre-baby figure that was a lot more like hers.

That’s if they survived the delivery……

It comes down to everybody’s body is different and responds differently to pregnancy. I am currently pg with my third and will gain about 40 lbs. I gained 40 with my first two babies. I workout, eat well, and have big babies. That is how my body does it. ! lost 45 lbs by 3 weeks post- baby with my first and lost all 40 lbs. by 6 weeks post-baby with my second. I didn’t work out until both my babies were 6 weeks. I am a fit, thin woman who eat healthy. Bottom line: I believe her, 25 lbs. is average and she has a different metabolism then me that is just how her body does pregnancy.

I have to agree with the other moms here who’ve said that it is NOT hard to keep your weight gain at the low end of the spectrum while pregnant. Sadly, a lot of women seem to see pregnancy as a license to “get fat,” and spend the entire nine months eating fast food and ice cream, and sitting on their ever-expanding butt all day long. But by eating healthy foods — the usual suspects, like lean meats, fruits, veggies and lots of fibre — and trying to walk for 30 minutes at least four times a week, you can EASILY limit your weight gain to 25-30 lbs. I did it, and I am NOT an athletic or obsessive person by any stretch of the imagination. After my daughter was born, pretty much half of that weight came off within the first couple of days (hello, water weight!), and — again by eating well and slowly getting back into a walking routine — the rest of the weight came off by the time she was four months old.

Because really, how difficult is it to get outside for a 30-minute walk four measly times a week?????

I gotta admit, it bothers me that this web site can be so hard on celebrity women. While there are no doubt a lot of obsessed celebs out there who starve themselves and spend all of their spare hours working out, there are also some genuinely healthy women who should be praised for not only their physiques, but also their outlook on healthy living. I believe Keri when she says she doesn’t work out like she used to, but rather stays slim through good food choices and a lot of walking. Let’s face it, she IS naturally slender, and she also lives in New York, where walking everywhere is a way of life.

So call me crazy, but I think Keri is a fabulous example of how to stay healthy while pregnant, and she deserves our admiration, not derision.

I agree with “Another pg lady”. I’ll be honest, I was a PIG. I went from 125 to 165 on the night of my labor. I only exercised moderately, walking, but I was a PIG when it came to eating. After delivery, I went from 165 to 140 in about 2 weeks. Yeah, you only have maybe a 6-7 pound baby, but all that “other stuff” inside adds up to about 25 pounds. You also figure that you gain lots of WATER weight.
I think that her weight loss schedule was probably on schedule, but looking at her picture now….I think she looks the same as she was pre-prego. ALSO, I think when she said she only gained 25 pounds…I believe it was WAY more, I bet she gained more like 35 pounds.

Hearing those words always make me suspicious!

Keri is so beautiful. She has an ethereal quality about her. I loved her in Felicity and I think she can wear her hair every length. I loved it short and curly and I love it long and wavy too. She’s just a natural beauty. She seems sensible about her diet and weight.

I don’t know why they are doing a story on someone who didn’t have much weight to lose anyway. I gained 55 lbs with my first baby, and 60 lbs with my second, and it took me a little longer (about 9 months-1 year) each time, but I’m about 5lbs lighter than my wedding day weight, and look about 10lbs thinner (due to fat loss in the face due to aging :( .

Most of my friends also look thinner after having kids than before. We now have to chase around toddlers, and barely have time to eat ourselves.

She looks great. At three months post baby, I weighed 117. When I got prego, I was 145 and the day I gave birth I was just 155. (I had a good amount of fat on me already, as I am on the shorter side). I lost a ton of weight by breast feeding and I am quite certain that’s how a lot of the celebs do it. It’s not rocket science to know that breast feeding burns 500-800 calories a day. I got to a low of probably 113 and now am about 120, as I am not nursing anymore. Having a baby is no excuse to be chubby and let yourself go.

I’ll also point out that pregnancy messes with your appetite something fierce. I can see gaining only 25 pounds, because I literally have had NO appetite until around the halfway point of my pregnancy. I really didn’t eat much for a while because I just couldn’t force the food down. My body gained weight on it’s own, but not everyone does, plenty of healthy, normal weight women lose weight in their first trimester.

I don’t think it’s fair to make a lot of judgements about someone’s pregnancy weight gain without walking a mile in their maternity pants.

she looks great! thin but really healthy…i’m soo jealous

Weight gain during pregnancy is really genetic. I walked 3 miles a day and ate healthy during my pregnancies, but still gained 55-60lbs both times. I even vowed to watch what I ate more carefully the second time around, but it still came piling on. My mom was exactly the same, we both piled on the weight during pregnancy, but got thinner after children.

Oh, and it’s totally true about breastfeeding. Some people don’t have to go on any type of diet. I nursed both for about 1 year, and the weight came right off without even trying. THAT is genetic too. Some people got lucky genes, and some have to struggle with weight all the time. It’s the sad truth.

Good for her. I don’t think she ius hiding something.
I only gained 14 pounds with my daughter and then lost 35 within 3 weeks after giving birth to her. Believe I did no exercise in that itme. I did breast feed though.
With my son I gained 35 pounds and only 25 pounds came off within the first 3 weeks. The other 10 stuck around for about a year.

Everybody’s body is DIFFERENT. There seems to be a lot of jealous people quick to judge Keri.

Sorry to you people that aren’t naturally small or who gained a lot of weight when you had a baby or don’t lose weight from walking, but some people are small, don’t put on much baby weight, and burn calories easily from things such as walking.

She looks good and since I don’t know her, the last thing I’d do is call her a liar.

Andrea, I am sorry for my ignorance but what’s ‘OB rotation’?

Yes, ‘put me off my tea’ is a common English expression! It means something made you feel so unpleasent that you couldn’t eat (we often use the term ‘tea’ to mean a meal, generally scones, cakes, sandwiches, eaten between 4-6pm (high or afternoon tea in other words) but it’s become more often associated with an evening meal as, alas, no-one eats ‘tea’ anymore).

Luckily, I have never wanted children. Having a phobia of them would go along with my other hang-ups!

Doesn’t she normally have curly hair?
