Male Celebrity Weight Discussion
Is it just my imagination, or are Hollywood leading men just getting more overweight and unattractive as the years go on? While the ladies are slimming down to toothpick proportions to fight for movie roles, guys like Jack Black, Seth Rogan (from Knocked Up), and Jonah Hill (from Knocked Up and other movies) are showing up on the big screen looking overweight and disheveled.

^^^Jonah Hill doing some shopping this week
I have just chosen a few examples - there are many more out there.

^^^Jack Black Christmas Shopping this week
It goes without saying that these guys are all great actors. But the question is, why is there a double standard in Hollywood in regards to weight and looks? Why are these men allowed to look like this on the big screen? Are we (women) supposed to find them attractive? (I don’t, personally).
But we all know what would happen if a female movie star looked like this… they would get torn to pieces by the press and tabloids, for starters.
What do you all think?

Well I think its always been the fact that “fat” male actors are supposed to play the funny guy stereotypes (Chris Farley, John Belushi– coincidently both dead). Yes it is most certainly a double standard. Just take “Knocked Up” for example. You have the beautiful, thin Katherine Heigl playing opposite the chubby, funny Seth Rogan. It will probably only get worse. People don’t want to watch a movie with TWO overweight people. Plus its funnier to have an unattainable girl make out with the slob.
By Er on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
I think they are all adorable, especially Seth and Jack. I love big guys. They give the best hugs.
By BoBeffi on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
Well, a lot of women will go after a guy’s sense of humor, even if he’s chubby/fat, but guys (and this is proven via research) are more focused on the looks of their partner. So while funny fat guys can still be found attractive, any type of fat girl isn’t likely to be.
By Jodi on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
Yikes. Sorry for the double posts, nearly identical. As an addendum, I’ll just say that I find Jack Black absolutely irresistible because of his sense of humor, musical ability (his song “F*ck Her Gently” is a RIOT), and impish face.
By Melissa on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
There are a lot of chubby/fat women actresses too though! We’re just not as mean to them because they feel bad about being this way. I say if a person is happy who care… I mean look at that girl from Hairspray. Total chubs but she’s happy that way and not trying to change… you don’t criticize people like that yet you will attack the men? Seems like a double standard to me.

I once had a serious relationship with a guy that was overweight. He was over six feet, but probably 210. He had low self-esteen about it, despite the fact that he was good-looking, funny, and totally charming.
Just look at men’s underwear ads, and you’ll see that men face a lot of the same pressure that women do - and suffer many of the same problems as a result.
I think that part of the issue with all of the above guys is that they are comedic actors. There is a long standing joke that schlumpfy is funny.
Then again, they could also be emotional eaters, etc.
By Steph on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
They look sloppy and unhealthy. There is nothing attractive about that. I doubt people would find them as funny if they didn’t use their weight and appearance to get laughs.

these men aren’t meant to be sexy and it’s not fair that they are cast as funny/fat slobs who get the girl nor is it fair when its done the other way round with fat women
nor is it fair when a film has more than five black main characters its an urban film/black culture centred movie, nor is it fair old men get cast with young women as their love interest when they quite literally past it
but i’l live, life is unfair

In Hollywood, a woman’s value is in her looks. A man’s value is found in how heroic he is in a movie, in which case, a leading man’s looks are important. But if he is funny or charming, he can look like a schlub.
It doesn’t work that way for women, no matter how funny or charming she is. A chubby chick will never be a leading lady, no matter how funny, charming or pretty she is.

There is a higher standard for women and their appearance in general and hollywood is just an exaggeration of real life. So it just makes sense that there would be greater pressure put on actresses to look a certain way.
I totally agree with mem abt the funny guy streotype though. I doubt you will ever see an overweight romantic male lead - average, yes, overweight, no.
By andrea on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
Fat guys are funny. Even the comedians who aren’t fat are still relatively unattractive (Will Ferrel?). The same thing goes for women though. Fat women can get roles as long as they are funny. Here I’m thinking of the Queens of Comedy, Margaret Cho, Queen Latifah, etc. Male actors in serious roles are under the same stress as the women to stay fit.
I think Seth is adorable, by the way, but that sex scene in Knocked Up was Painful. Yuck.
I dated a guy once who gained 60 lbs while we were together. He was actually annoyed that I wasn’t sexually attracted to him anymore. I broke up with him.
By Beth on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
It is a double standard. There are female celebrities who are not even close to overweight who get ripped to shreds and called “unhealthy” all the time. These guys are definitely very obviously overweight and unhealthy and I know a lot of people who think they’re “cute.” When pics like this are posted, where are the people who usually freak out and say “OMG OBESE!!!!” about Kelly Clarkson?

By lizzieflamingo on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
These men, with the exception of “Knocked Up” are not playing romantic leads. And even in “Knocked Up”, part of the angle was, “Oh look, this beautiful girl is with this dumpy guy! Like that would EVER happen!”
The mainstream, romantic leads still go to the guys like Pitt and Clooney.

SAme stupid double standard - and its OUR fault as women!
Fat guys are just as gross as fat girls. They look like slobs and aren’t attractive at all. A man who takes pride and effort in how he looks will likely appreciate a women’s effort at doing the same.
By arose on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
I’m in agreement with both statements that these guys are supposed to be fat and dumpy looking, because that’s the parts they play; and also that a woman (no matter how good/funny/cute the actress) wouldn’t get away with it.
p.s. Clooney and Pitt (and all the other “heart throbs)don’t do anything for me either. I prefer my real life honey, who is toned, adorable and not at all schlumpy, and is pretty funny too.

They are sooo disgusting. It’s so unfair that women are maligned for being too fat or thin but guys can just look like crap and still get movie roles. Thank God for hotties like Orlando Bloom who even things out. Stay fit, sweet and beautiful Mr. Bloom.

I don’t know if I would call Jack Black a “leading man”, but yeah, they are doing role reversals themselves. It’s a good thing, but I’d like to see that same transformation in women comediennes. I mean, how many great funny women out there are size 2? Why can’t THEY be leading actresses too?

Brad Pitt makes me cringe. I am less than negatively attracted to him. George Clooney is another story. That smirk…yum.
Colin Ferrel (sp?) is nice to look at, but I value my health too much to touch him.
My first pick is still Jason Statham. Mmm, manly. John Cusack is cute in a dorky sort of way. That guy from Prime was pretty hot too.

Yeah, it shows us how we are still a man’s world because this is how movies and sitcoms are promoted- they represent the average joe who can get a chance with a hot chick. There are very few of the opposite situations being touted.
That aside, though, I kinda think Seth Rogan is cute. Being funny goes a long way. Too bad that apparently doesn’t make women more attractive.

I think it’s absolutely disgusting that some of you are talking about “Aw, they’re cute” or “I’d date him” and things like that. This is the whole point she is trying to make with this post, why is it acceptable for a male to be a fat slob and be found attractive by women yet if a woman is slightly over weight she gets ridicule for it and is seen as sexually unattractive. It is more natural for a woman to have a little extra body fat because she is biologically built to carry children, she has hips and a bust. Males really have no biologic reason to be overweight. This world is so backwards it scares me sometimes

Women do put the double standard on themselves, ‘they don’t care about men’s beer guts as much as they do about other women’s love handles’, well said, Alice! So I’ve just deciced I’ll start to care and call Jonah Hill and Jack Black plain fat! Being a little chubby is fine, can be compensated for easily enough, but these guys have crossed the line into unhealthy territory about 20 pounds ago.
And Jodi, where on earth did you find a guy like that?
By emogurl on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
Yeah, there’s a massive double standard and it can’t just be attributed to ’society’ that vague cover-all term. I think it’s because women/girls are so hard on themselves and each other but are always willing to make allowances for men. Bleh, that’s just how it goes. It’s pretty sucky but what are you gonna do? I do it myself, I’m like ew Kelly Clarkson, stop eating pies but then I see Seth Rogan and I’m like wow, what a hottie… just ‘cos he’s funny!

Wow, Vicky. Don’t you think “disgusting” is a bit harsh, considering that the girls here are just saying who they think is cute or dateable or whatever? Rian didn’t limit the “dicussion” to the ridiculous double-standards for attractiveness. This is a lighthearted blog. No need to attack people for going a bit off-topic and not writing a thesis on something more supposedly important.
Now, having said that, George Clooney is not “old”. Also, I think Kathy Bates is sexy as hell.
By MarikaJ on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
Okay Vicki, let me get this straight, the REST of the world is backwards, but you’ve got it all figured out. We’re just talking about what people are naturally attracted to or not attracted to. I don’t think there’s really a wrong answer. Men and women have different preferences, it doesn’t make either gender ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’.
Oh, and for me, Benicio del Toro. Holy. Smokes.
By andrea on Dec 12, 2007 | Reply
I’d much rather have someone “old” like George Clooney than some 21 year old who shaves once a week and has no clue what to do in bed! I’ll take experience any day.
My boyfriend is 10 years older, and I’m very comfortable with that age difference. Another thing that is important for me is height- he’s 6′8″. Tall guys are very sexy to me. If I were single, I’d take CJ from Top Chef in a heartbeat.
Jodi, your boyfriend sounds hot. I have swooned over each of those guys separately in the past. I also usually don’t like blondes, but I’ve got one now. He’s the first one I’ve ever dated, come to think of it…

Andrea, I like your style. I was with a much older man for yeeeears. Experience, and not just the sexual kind, is so attractive. Although I have been known to go out with guys a lot younger than I am, too, that’s usually just for aesthetics. But even then, I like a face that looks like it’s “seen” a lot, which means it usually *knows* more than its younger, less experienced counterparts.
A face that appeals to me so much I can barely stand it is that attached to Thorsten Kaye, an actor on “All My Children”. (Yes, I watch that nonsense. Someone got me “hooked’ 22 years ago, and I just can’t stop watching — even though it pretty much sucks.)
My current boyfriend, to whom I am extraordinarily committed, is five years younger than I am and 6′1″. Just in case you’re wondering.

Jack Black has stated that he plans on shaping up and slimming down.
I think it comes down to this: men get roles because the people who run the industry are guys. Unless its for an action movie or something of that ilk the guys can get away without being buff. Where as women DESTROY each other. Honestly, if there were an overweight woman on screen (when the call for an overweight woman wasnt stated) every girl in the audience would tear them to pieces for it. Men get away with it because other men dont give a shit if a guy is buff or not.

I think fat people fall back on their humor to make people see their personality rather than their looks. That is just my observation and I don’t think it’s true for everyone that is overweight obv. I am just saying that they try to overcompensate for something they lack. Or maybe they are just naturally funny, what do I know?

it’s common knowledge that most “physically attractive” guys are complete douche bags. how can you be comfortable with someone who is so consumed with being ideal. look at me, not a mirror.
the more you get to know a person, the more you fall for them and comedians are typically very open/sincere about their lives/perspectives.
i feel sorry for girls who put down guys like jonah & jack. they obviously have no clue what it’s like to be a real human being.

i think it’s a little unfair to put Jonah Hill in this category. if anyone had seen Accepted, a movie he did before Superbad, they will see HOW MUCH WEIGHT he really has lost. he’s gone from being unhealthy to just chubby and i think that’s a great accomplishment. he may or may not lose more weight, but who cares. i think it suits him and it keeps SOME kind of realism on screen, since we definitely can’t look to women in Hollywood for that.
By Sophie on Dec 16, 2007 | Reply
None of these men are ever cast as sexy men and not considered attractive but just about all lead female actresses are considered sexy these days. Does society only care about a woman if she has sex appeal?
I think the real double standard when it comes to what is considered attractive is age. Clooney and Brad Pitt are well into their forties but the women ususally voted the sexiest (Jessica Alba, Scarlett) are only in their early twenties.
