The latest copy of Good Housekeeping’s Quick and Simple magazine is running a cover story that promises to let us all in on some of the juiciest secrets that celebrities use to stay slim! Many of these tips and diet ideas are quite fascinating, to say the least…

Here is a rundown of the story’s highlights:

  • Kelly Ripa enjoys her biggest meal in the middle of the day and eats lightly at night to keep the bloat away.
  • Mandy Moore puts coleslaw on her sandwiches instead of mayo and/or cheese! (Ew!)
  • Catherine Zeta Jones eats smoked salmon on black bread, and tops it with… crushed potato chips!
  • Kim Cattrall eats one ounce of dark chocolate (rich in antioxidants) every day.
  • Kristin Davis wears a Walk Vest (walkvest.com), which has a half pound of metal inserts that help her walk off even more calories during her workout.
  • Angelina Jolie drinks two cups of green tea daily.
  • Julia Roberts eats off of light blue plates and bowls, which are said to stimulate the appetite the least of any color.
  • Jennifer Hudson lost some weight recently on a high protein, low fat diet that included several glasses of cranberry juice every day!
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt refuses to diet, and eats biscuits and honey for breakfast most days.
  • Alicia Silverstone has trained her dog to bark anytime she heads for the kitchen to snack!
  • Uma Thurman claims that knitting keeps her hands busy and out of that cookie jar!
  • Heidi Klum eats a salad tossed with vinegar before going out to eat.
  • Tyra Banks swears by Spanx, a garment that holds it all in.

Some of these ideas are pretty off the wall… but hey, who ever said staying Hollywood-skinny was easy?

    Some sound interesting.

Most of them are kind of odd. Vinegar is gross.

  3. By jenni on May 13, 2008 | Reply

wow at least these ideas are different…

  4. By Tucker on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    P.S

The Cranberry Juice diet thing “South Beach Flush” or whatever, only works is you drink actual Cranberry Juice, not Cranberry Juice Cocktail which is all sugar. Also you can’t eat or drink anything but the juice and water, the (real) juice is mad exspensieve, and it takes off water weight for like a week.

    Dumb idea!

Ehh. Big deal. Consider me completely non-plussed.

  6. By poops on May 13, 2008 | Reply

At least Tyra owns her chub.

Julia Roberts could employ me to smack the food out of her mouth, if she wanted to.

  7. By Soviet Rocket on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Um I wonder how much fun the ladies at that mag had in making these up. All of these sound completely fake. The only legit sounding one is the Kelly Ripa one.

  8. By PoliteTia on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Most of the starlets listed aren’t even relevant. They aren’t packing ‘bums’ in the movie theater.
Who cares what lardo’s Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Love Hewitt eat.
Post Carmen Diaz or Christina Ricci diets! We know their’s work.

  9. By Teed on May 13, 2008 | Reply

those are pretty interesting, I must say

  10. By Kyo. on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Coleslaw on a sandwich doesn’t sound bad at all, it probably isn’t that different from having lettuce and mayo. It’s a better choice than cheese anyway.

  11. By lily on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Actually, I do exactly what Heidi Klum does and it is very effective to curb overeating at restaurants. High quality balsamic vinegar on organic, dark mixed green salads is delicious, filling and extremely low calorie.

    light blue plates?

  13. By Alyssa on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    Ever heard of working out?
    Jeez..

    DIETS DONT WORK!!!

  14. By lana on May 13, 2008 | Reply

kelly ripa eats her biggest meal in the middle of the day? i imagine her biggest meal is some celery and a cup of coffee.

  15. By cellulite eXpert on May 13, 2008 | Reply

the walkvest is the best tip, as it really does make you burn more calories. i love mine.

  16. By abigail on May 13, 2008 | Reply

That’s funny because I once read an interview with Catherine Zeta where she claimed to NEVER EVER eat chips…

  17. By sweetnsour on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Kristin Davis’ diet ’secret’ is the only one out of all those that would actually work.

  18. By bSL on May 13, 2008 | Reply

This. Is. All. Bull. The REAL diet tips are the following:
    1) Presciption Appetite suppresants or
    2) Adderal

Then make up some bull about your diet “tips” for a mag that fawns over your new weight loss. And say things like “I just have a metabolism that marches right through everything!” when questioned about your perpetual skinniness.

  19. By utahaugust on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Ha ha… I just bought light blue plates. Suh-weet! Weight-loss, here I come! Ha ha.

  20. By spanktacular on May 13, 2008 | Reply

these dont sound all that crazy to me (aside from the coleslaw & dog barking)

  21. By Meg on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    These are funny. And sad.

How would substituting mayo for coleslaw help matters? Coleslaw is loaded with mayo!

  22. By breads on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    and i care because?

  23. By Spectra on May 13, 2008 | Reply

All of them are lying except Tyra. At least she admits to wearing the Spanx, even though you know just about everyone in LA wears them anyway. Alicia Silverstone trained her dog to bark when she gets a snack?? How is that going to help anything? She should have trained him to bite her ass when she gets food. THAT’LL take the pounds off.

Most celebs keep their weight off by smoking and using drugs, but like they’re going to admit THAT to a magazine.

I will say though, knitting really does keep your hands busy and prevents you from eating while you’re doing it.

  24. By Mouse on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Kelly Ripa’s “diet” to maintain weight is probably the most reasonable and honestly it works. I mean, you can’t chow down a 2000 calorie lunch, but it’s a really good one and not that difficult to do.
Heidi Klum’s idea makes sense. A big plate of roughage is a great way to fill your belly before heading out. But unless you eat out so regularly that you don’t care to eat much, I’d rather be really hungry for a special meal out.

The rest are completely unhelpful and not really diet tips. More like anectodal quotes. Oooh, Julia Roberts you are SOO clever to eat off of blue plates. wtf?

  25. By Victoria on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    hahahaha.

    Teaching your dog to bark???

where are Amy Winehouse and Nicole Richie diets? I am more interested in their diets.

  27. By Amy Q on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Amy winehouse: drugs, coffee and water.
Nichole Richie:no food. just coffee and water.

  28. By Amy Q on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    oh yeah:

    breakfast:meth
lunch: a little bit of bulimia
dinner: coffee sweetend with some cocaine

It is nice of them to toss these little insignificant tidbits to the lard-assed middle-aged readers of Good Housekeeping and their affiliates, but it does no good. The fact remains that aside from Tyra, JLH and Mandy Moore (the three I would never trade bodies with), most of these women work out a ton. They are in excellent physical shape. Unless the readers of this magazine are going to start spending 2 hours in the gym every day this is all just fluff and shattered hopes.

  30. By noemi on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    i like Alicia Silverstone’s idea

  31. By Oksana on May 13, 2008 | Reply

lol thanks for the tips Amy Q. But you know that Nicole is now on drug treatment so when she was really skinny she was doing drugs so i think you should add drugs to her diet too.

  32. By Elaine on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Andrea is so funny - but she speaks the truth - it’s basically the lard-assed middle-aged women that read that mag.

  33. By Frankie on May 13, 2008 | Reply

hehe I do most of these habits(2 green tea cups, salad with vinegar but I eat it WITH lunch) and biggest meal is the middle of the day! but am not too strict like them at least these things keep me from gaining..

  34. By LisaR on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Oh! Two cups of green tea daily and you too can look like Angelina Jolie! :-) These articles crack me up.

Here’s the truth ladies..crazy work out routines, lots of starvation and/or trips to the loo after meals, monthly colonics, and annual lipo appointments. I work in the biz..and I KNOW.

ps..JLH likely DOES eat morning bicuits with honey..she’s giving the finger to the establishment.

  35. By mel on May 13, 2008 | Reply

half these people arent skinny, so there you go! and freaking cole slaw IS made with mayo and nasty besides.

  36. By ValerieSara on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Fat ass with the spanx. Please. Take a walk for as long as it takes you to squeeze your lard into the spanx and you might actually not have to rely on that modern day girdle…as if spanx really fools anybody anyway.

  37. By angelique on May 13, 2008 | Reply

    pfhhh

I doubt Kelly Ripa ‘enjoys’ her meal. More like ‘picks at it and pushes it around her plate.’

I’ve never thought Catherine Zeta Jones has a nice body so I’ll stay away from that foul potato chip fish sandwich.

  38. By zoey on May 13, 2008 | Reply

Well, Jennifer Love-Hewett LOOKS like she eats biscuits and honey for breakfast most days.

  39. By Maria on May 14, 2008 | Reply

that article sounds pretty random. don’t believe a word of it. most of the stars would probably never admit to something like that..

  40. By Size--0 on May 14, 2008 | Reply

totally agree with “Alyssa on May 13, 2008″.
    Dieting doesn’t work.
Eating healthy does. Just work out. Gosh! What’s the big deal?!

  41. By leah on May 14, 2008 | Reply

Lana you are correct about the Riped one. I don’t think Kelly has “enjoyed” a meal since she had her 3rd child. She definately owns her bones and is darned proud of it!

  42. By jamie on May 14, 2008 | Reply

okay, aside from the fact that cole slaw is LOADED with mayo (which might explain why nobody is knocking down mandy moore’s door for her diet tips) I sincerely hope that bit about the weight vest with A HALF POUND of inserts was a typo…. my purse weighs about 12 times that much. Oooh, what a work out.

I don’t know what’s the mental block about women and weights. LIFT SOMETHING HEAVY LADIES! it will not make you bulky. Odds are you don’t eat enough protein (and you definitely don’t have enough testosterone) to build those kinds of muscles anyway. 6 lb. weights do not “tone”, they just waste your time.

  43. By ohlala on May 14, 2008 | Reply

yeah, i know plenty of people in the industry and pretty much adderall is their “secret” but it’s a shame cuz i am 43 5 2″ and last year decided to do a 20 min pilates program everyday, eat healthy…lots of protein…NEVER STARVE cuz it leads to binging…and lost 20lbs in 3 months…i feel great and now eat pretty much whatever i want as long as i excercise and the biggest thing for me was a special dieters green tea every nite to stay regular…definitely better and healthier than laxatives.

  44. By Duvessa on May 14, 2008 | Reply

Yeah, all those hot diet tips sound really likely. LMAO!

  45. By FW on May 14, 2008 | Reply

Mandy Moore puts coleslaw on her sandwiches instead of mayo and/or cheese! — isn’t coleslaw made with mayo?

they are all little gimmicky things that are interesting but don’t necessarily have much impact on the overall diet - it all comes down to eating and exercise balance and self control!

  46. By louisemiller on May 14, 2008 | Reply

ohlala.. what dieters green tea are you drinking at night? i’m looking for something like that for regualrity cause metamucil 3 times a day has 60 calories. and i’d much rather eat those 60 than take them as metamucil. thnx

  47. By nottelling on May 14, 2008 | Reply

Adderall only works if you don’t succumb to the temptation to eat. My friend takes it every day and is still overweight because she eats.

  48. By ml-rb on May 14, 2008 | Reply

Amy Q got it exactly right!! LMAO

  49. By ohlala on May 14, 2008 | Reply

louismiller i don’t know where you live but you can find several different dieters green teas in asian markets (the one i use has a ballerina on it)…i’ve tried a couple (cuz sometimes they were out of the one i was taking) and it worked the same.

  50. By ohlala on May 14, 2008 | Reply

and ps-if anyone’s interested i do the denise austin pilates at home…even though i find her other videos annoying this one really works…and it’s only 20mins! i also use pilates arm circles and it’s amazing how well they work…remember i’m 43 and after having my daughter at the age of 30…gained 60 pounds there…and never worked out after that so hung on to lots of the weight. i went from a sz 6/8 to a healthy 2.

  51. By size--0 on May 14, 2008 | Reply

    wow ohlala good job!

  52. By Jen on May 15, 2008 | Reply

Where was the mention of Adderall abuse? I have a legitimate prescription for it due to severe ADD, and abuse of it seems to be rampant in LA. Everytime I visit, my Cali friends offer to buy it off of me. WTF? I cannot see why anyone would take that stuff without a real need. It’s miserable.

  53. By Ickles on May 15, 2008 | Reply

    Coleslaw on sammiches = delicious.

  54. By angeldevil on May 15, 2008 | Reply

I think it’s a great idea to eat a main meal in the middle of the day, and avoid heavy food later. I eat basically in the evening, afterwards I feel really terrible. So now I will try to eat my biggest meal for lunch, and will try to keep it at the same time every day…

  55. By Sylvie on May 18, 2008 | Reply

Kristin Davis use to be a yoga teacher and probably still practices so I can believe the vest one. The Julia Roberts one is bs ’cause it doesn’t really matter what color your plates are, it matters how much you put on them. They probably made most of them up though. I mean seriously isn’t Alicia a vegan? There aren’t really alot of choices left and fruits & veggies aren’t going to fatten you up!

  56. By idajoon on May 19, 2008 | Reply

Am I supposed to believe Kelly Ripa ever eats a real “meal”? Are you kidding me? She’s starting to look really scary these days.

  57. By Leela on May 22, 2008 | Reply

I believe that most of these women have eating disorders. Please. They are all in the spotlight about every little buldge. Being uptight only makes sense. I’m sad for our nation in about 10 years…just think of the scruntiny we hold upon these people and what it’s going to be like in the future. Will ANYONE be right?? Scary. The internet has created a playground to pick apart people and set standards for beauty. I hope all you young people know what you’re heading into to.
