Queen Latifah has reached her goal on the Jenny Craig program, which was a 20 pound weight loss. She doesn’t plan to lose any more weight and is quite happy where she is at. The above photo was taken last month, and she actually looks a lot better than she used to weight-wise.

“I’m not caught up in how big or small I am,” the actress/singer, 38, tells In Touch of her weight-loss strategy, “Some people say they’re a skinny person trapped in a big girl’s body and I’ve never seen myself like that. I just feel like I could get a little healthier, so why not?” she says.

Latifah started the plan back in January of this year, so she lost the weight at a fairly slow and healthy rate, averaging 2-3 pounds lost per month.

She says that to lose the weight, she just cut back a little on everything:

“I feel good. I don’t feel all bloated and tired after a meal,” she says. “I haven’t had to sacrifice anything that I normally eat, I just eat a little bit less of it.”

This confuses me because I thought the Jenny Craig program was mostly pre-packaged food? Hmm.

Anyway, Latifah will not reveal her actual weight (can’t say I blame her, especially after last year’s Kirstie scandal!) but claims it’s between 195-215 pounds. Which if that is true, would still put her in the “overweight” or even “obese” BMI range.

What do you all think - does her ad campaign send an unhealthy message to us all, telling us it’s OK to settle for an overweight BMI? Let’s get a hot debate going…

    first!

  3. jodi | 14/08/08

oh not so much… she’s one of those people who will look good at any weight, but she could stand to lose a couple more lbs

  4. meagain | 14/08/08

sooo… she lost twenty pounds, may have gained what, like 5 years back , yet she’s still gonna die of a heart attack 15 years younger than she should… congratulations on the 15 and on having low expectations.

  5. AnnieJ | 14/08/08

Yeah, she could lose some more.

  6. asicsgirl | 14/08/08

well if not for appearance, she certainly should lose more for her health come on being That Overweight or Obese is just UN-Healthy not to mention UnAppealing!
I can’t see That much of a difference if she is 200 lbs 20 lbs is just 10% - When you are OBESE you certainly can lose more then TEN percent.

  7. Persephone | 14/08/08

I am not sure what kind of message it sends since my opinion about what looks good on people is not influenced by others. I do think the message that it sends is a lot more healthy than the message that you have to starve yourself and be ultrathin in order to be beautiful or happy. It sends a message that you should take healthy measures to take care of your weight and body.

Queen Latifah is a big woman. She is tall and big boned. She also appears to be muscular and has a relatively flat stomach. This may just be her natural size and body type. SHe isn’t flabby, just big. She could lose some more weight in my opinion, but I just think thinner looks better. I always have and always will.

  8. Yvonne | 14/08/08

    THAT’S her goal weight??
Yikes, I would be horrified if I was that weight!!

  9. may | 14/08/08

she looks fine. She’s happy so that’s all that matters.

  10. Jodi | 14/08/08

Just in case anyone’s wondering — and I’m sure you’re all just on the edge of your seats — I’m not the “jodi” above.

  11. Victoria | 14/08/08

I agree with Persephone. She is just naturally big, and her body will naturally just always be larger than what the average weight is. Maybe Queen Latifah should lose more weight to be healthy, I’m not sure, but she definitely will always be “big” even when healthy.

That said, of course the BMI chart is not always reliable because it’s just an average of most people. If, perhaps, Nicky Hilton gained a bunch of weight, she might still fit in the “normal” weight category but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be overweight for her body type.

  12. suzy | 14/08/08

Maybe Jenny Craig wanted her to set and meet a reachable goal and then say she was satisfied. Better than some of their other spokeschubbies, who claimed complete success but still looked… well, fat. Just guessing.

As for the “not sacrificing anything I normally eat, just eat less of it” comment, Jenny Craig food IS normal food, what most people normally eat. You certainly don’t sacrifice what you eat, just flavor, freshness, variety… all those things that make eating interesting.

Queen L is still queen-sized. She should consider the 20 pounds a nice start, and keep going until she at least isn’t overweight. No one except herself says she has to be a “skinny person”; how about being a “healthy person”?

  13. Coco | 14/08/08

Its an improvement. She has a healthy attitude, and she’s a work in progress. Credit where its due.

  14. PA | 14/08/08

The BMI chart is misleading. It does not take into account your frame size. You could be the ok range but look bad because you could be untoned. I personally think it is the person’s business in what they “choose” to be like. Some are OK with what they GOOD LORD gave them. Some choose to fight it. I think it is about being happy. And you can eat in moderation and not deprive yourself of things.

  15. KELSO | 14/08/08

    …..she looks the same.

  16. fatso | 14/08/08

she is the opposite of nicole for (th) inspiration, she is used by the fat people as (curvy) to justify and glorify bigness. as awful as “most-normal” people think nicole is queen latifah is just as hideous. no excuse for such extremes.

  17. * | 14/08/08

that stomach is far from flat it is fat

  18. Steph | 14/08/08

I think she is sending out a healthy message to those who are overweight. Basically she’s showing people that you don’t need to starve yourself in order to lose weight. Everyone is different and maybe she doesn’t mind being overweight, so thats her personal decision. She has lost some weight probably because of health issues to begin with and as long as she has taken care of those, then good for her.

  19. meagain | 14/08/08

oh puuullleeeze people… am i seriously the only one who remembers her miami pictures?! i don’t care if the bmi chart is flawed or not, noone “naturally” has a bmi of around 30. just because you settle a certain weight doesn’t make it your natural weight. that just means you eat too many calories consistently. it would be one thing if this was just half way through, but if this really is her “GOAL” weight… then it’s sad. she can be as happy as she likes now, she’ll be singing a different tune when she develops diabetes (if she doesn’t already have it) or suffers a heart attack before she turns 40.

  20. Kiera | 14/08/08

    Exactly!

  21. Kate | 14/08/08

Eh it’s kind of a cop out, I mean I know she wants to inspire women not to think dieting means you have to be stick thin or starved, but she’s cutting herself short too. I understand some people are just bigger boned, literaly they just always have been bigger so it’s ridiculous to try and whittle yourself away. But you should and can still be healthy, take a look at Brooke Hogan or America Ferari (sorry not sure on the spelling), both of them have slimmed down and still aren’t skinny but they look healthy! She should follow their example!

  22. miraclemommie | 14/08/08

She is overweight, bottom line. If her health is improved by her minor weight loss, good for her. She is at risk for health issues given her ethnicity, such as diabetes and heart disease, so she’d be even a better role model if she took even more weight off to show overweight people that it can be done without drastic measures.
She is a beautiful woman no matter what size, but she gets more striking as she loses weight. It would be great to see her lose another 40 lbs or so.

  23. purple | 14/08/08

she eats alot and doesn’t want to stop - even for her health. not good.

  24. D | 14/08/08

    Ewwwww, now lose 100 more.

  25. Geeta | 14/08/08

Ewwww NOW LOSE 200 more. DISGUSTING.

  26. PPP | 14/08/08

I say NOW LOSE 500 more jk

  27. fat ass | 14/08/08

No I say about 150 more to look like a “hollywood it girl” haha. She could do it if starjones did

  28. Janice | 14/08/08

I think she is a great role model for people. She is basically saying you don’t have to be a size 0 to be healthy. If the doctors give her a good bill of healthy who are you or I to say she isn’t healthy. I think the BMI chart is misleading because all you need to calculate your BMI is your height and weight. It does not take in to effect what your muscule mass is or even the frame of your body. I know some people who would be considered “overweight” and they are so much healthier than people who are size 2.

  29. D | 14/08/08

Well I think her BMI would be pretty accurate. She obviously had no muscle or anything but fat so yeah she would have a BMI that would consider her obese.

  30. Edan | 14/08/08

Hey all, I lurk around here more than comment anymore, but for the record, BMI is total bullshit.
I also don’t think Queen L’s message is anymore “unhealthy” than the endless bombardment of messages that a female cannot be beautiful or worthy of love unless she looks like she’s about to drop dead of starvation.
If you are eating properly and keeping active you can keep heathy, and your weight is not necessarily a foolproof indicator of your health. *SHOCK!* I’ll get down off my soapbox now.

  31. Cossey | 14/08/08

We now have a good Jodi & an evil Jodi!!!! :)

Since she has lost weight…is she now just a Princess instead of a Queen???

  32. Coco | 14/08/08

she will never be thin, no matter what she does. you can tell just by looking at her. it’s not her body type. it’s not her personality either.

  33. EW | 14/08/08

that is really ugly - can she be any rounder.
she could actually lose a whole person (100 lbs)!
can i say EWW one more time
    -ridiculous she doesn’t comprehend this.

  34. meagain | 14/08/08

janice… so what now, don’t be a size two… be an 18 or 20!!! i dont think so.

  35. ali | 14/08/08

i don’t think she’s sending out the wrong message at all. she’s healthy and happy with her body. besides, BMI can be misleading.

  36. OBSCENE | 14/08/08

1: disgusting to the senses : repulsive
2 a: abhorrent to morality or virtue; specifically : designed to incite to lust or depravity b: containing or being language regarded as taboo in polite usage c: repulsive by reason of crass disregard of moral or ethical principles d: so excessive as to be offensive

  37. b.SL | 14/08/08

I don’t think the campaign TELLS you to be anything, because one is supposed to be able to make up one’s mind for themselves. I think what’s she saying is, she felt great the way she was (and that’s really all that matters- if a person feels good about who they are, its none of the rest of the world’s business), but she knew that she could be a confidant, plus-size woman who’s a little healthier. ANd she took steps to make that happen in a healthy way.
If you want to be healthy and average BMI range, do it. If you’re happy being a big girl, don’t knock them for it, either.
Either way, she looks fantastic and you can tell she’s been taking care of herself. Personally, I prefer to be in the single-number clothing sizes, but I don’t knock anyone else’s choices.

  38. Ali | 14/08/08

if someone feels comfortable with their body and has no feelings of shame or “being lesser than”, because of a higher bmi, heck…let them be. There are so many overweight and obease people that have never ‘really’ tried to lose weight and they have just settled into being that way. They constantly wear fat-people clothes, and look horrible. This kind of LAZYNESS is disgusting. If someone maintians their ‘looks’ and shows that they respect themselves, why make size an issue…cuz I’d rather see an overweight well groomed person walking down the street, than a slim and boring/lazy one.

  39. D | 14/08/08

She is not healthy. Seriously being that over weight is terrible for your health and she honesly needs to lose a lot more weight.

  40. wommie | 14/08/08

I think that the point here is more that she is comfotable with her size and maybe that is a good thing?

  41. Jodi | 14/08/08

Thank god for Edan for popping up just in time to save me from saying something similar. I miss that sort of Voice of Reason.

  42. Of course you're not | 14/08/08

C’mon Jodi, of course we know you are not the jodi form above. ;) You are way beyond the “first” claimers.

  43. I DON'T GET IT | 14/08/08

So why claim to be first if that’s all you have to say??????????

  44. ghost of myself | 14/08/08

while I love being a size 2, I like to see people who look healthy & happy even if they are at a larger weight, so I think Qeen Latifah is fine as long as her health is not in jeopardy.
Her face is not so great in this picture, but most times her face looks great and she truly seems to enjoy her life.
I look at her in other picture & the pictures of Chanel Iman and can see the beauty in both women.
Star Jones on the other hand may have lost a lot of weight, but she looks hideous!!!

  45. Vannuccia | 14/08/08

As always she carries her extra weight well (one of the few people who actually can). She looks healthy! Calculating someone’s BMI is widely recognised as not being a reliable method of measuring obesity anymore. It’s easy to see that QL is a tall woman with big bones, so being slender would never suit her- as long as she eats well and exercises, that’s the main thing!Looks like all the teenage anas are out in force tohight….

  46. meagain | 14/08/08

miami… please if you think she is healthy “just as she is” just google her in miami, it was about a month or so ago…

also, i would like to ask everyone stating that she’s fine “as long as she’s happy”…. what makes her ok at this weight, and not every other obese woman out there… they could be just as happy and comfortable at their weight too… why is just she ok being overweight? thats a double standard if you ask me.

p.s. there is a happy medium between proana and pro obese… imo.. if she’s happy just as she is… “She doesn’t plan to lose any more weight and is quite happy where she is at” if thats true, then she has NOT found that happy medium.

  47. meagain | 14/08/08

while my other comment is in moderation, i would like to add, that though the bmi chart is flawed… it’s not obsolete… she’s NOT in that questionable threshold… she has alot of body fat on her. you can’t necessarily see it in this picture, but you can in others.

AND Vannuccia: “Looks like all the teenage anas are out in force tohight…. ”

just because some of us don’t support being overweight, doesn’t mean we are pro ana… i’m pro healthy.. FYI.

  48. mags | 14/08/08

Something is better than nothing. Most women set unrealistic goals and give up. QL set a reasonable goal and achieved it! Accomplishing a small goal is more motivation to me than a lofty goal that gets swept under the rug. QL knows she’s a big girl and isn’t claiming to be the ideal weight for good health in general, so I see no problem with this ad campaign.

  49. Rian | 14/08/08

Vannuccia no offense but that’s ridiculous to assume just because someone doesn’t prefer to be overweight that they are “ana”. There is such thing as being at an average, healthy weight - not overweight, obese, scary skinny or starving - just somewhere in between.

  50. cheergirl15 | 14/08/08

    vannuccia that was rude.
obesity isn’t healthy it also isn’t visually appealing - and anyone can see that.

  51. asicsgirl | 14/08/08

oh dear lord - the miami photos
idk what to say, that is awful she has roles of fat and all.
and she unleashing a “fat burger” franchise in miami. i find that suiting that she is helping promote America’s quest for obesity!

  52. lambman | 14/08/08

I think this sends a bit of the wrong message, if you’re 40 pounds over-weight your goal should be to loose 40 pounds, not 20. I doubt any doctor would say she is at her ideal weight now, but if your career is based around being a big woman you gotta stay big I guess.

  53. => | 14/08/08

omg the miami pix she honestly looks like a beached whale NO JOKE

  54. => | 14/08/08

she is more then 40 pounds over weight EW

  55. simmy | 14/08/08

recently i just saw on the today show (it might’ve been another morning talkshow) that being consistently over-weight is a lot more healthy than weight cycling (i.e yoyo dieting). they also said that being thinner doesn’t mean a person is healthy and being fat doesn’t necessarily mean a person is unhealthy. it depends on the % of fat in the person’s body and where it is carried. a thin person could have a higher body fat % than a heavy person. and they could be carrying fat around their internal organs which is definitely not healthy at all.

  56. MIAMI | 14/08/08

she is reverse (th) inspiration in those miami pictures!

  57. RaisinGirl | 14/08/08

Vannuccia, I bet you’re probably referring to the people who say that Queen Latifah needs to lose 150 pounds to look good. And if you are, I agree.

I actually appreciated this particular Jenny Craig campaign (more than most), because QL made a POINT of saying, “I lost 20 pounds and my cholesterol went down by 20 points.”

Thin people can (and do) die of heart attacks and diabetes, too. There are no absolutes here. When it comes to health, it really is the insides that count.

  58. paris herpes | 14/08/08

If she’s happy with her weight so be it. She’s not short either and she’s big boned, if you remember, so she may be overweight but at least she’s happy with herself for losing the weight she needed to be healthy. I bet most of you are average and aspire to be all thin like a lot of women on this website. The problem is that Hollywood has this impossible standard and women have to starve themselves in order to be even looked at. There’s something seriously wrong with that. Queen Latifah is VERY successful, she did music and now she acts despite the pressure to be thin. I think it’s more important to be healthy then to be skinny. The debate should be: What does being skinny have to do with you being happy with yourself, really?

  59. Sophie | 14/08/08

I think it’s silly when people say they are a skinny girl trapped in a big girl’s body. Weight is a physical thing not a state of mind.

Good on her for getting a little healthier but this biggest indicator of weight being a burden on your health is your waist measurement and as she seem to carry around that area she should prob lose a little more.

  60. jessica | 14/08/08

good for her if shes happy i guess. i really cant imagine being a size 16? could be comfortable or enjoyable. i just absolutely HATE that expression to keep your expectations low though. why settle to be mediocre when you could or should be great? that really gets me when women/younger girls/family/friends say someone famous or whoever is too skinny and that being curvy is better or that guys like it better. NO. wrong. people-mostly americans need to stop making excuses for being overweight and justifying themselves being fat. its not healthy, attractive, and heck, even economical for people to allow themselves to live like this. US women especially need to face the facts and stop making up reasons why its okay to feed ourselves ridiculously unhealthy food. its so frustrating that people think being on a diet or wanting to be thin you have to starve yourself. some portion control, healthy natural meals, and exercise is pretty much what it takes–its not hard science.

  61. ms_benes | 14/08/08

I like her and I wish her good health. Some folks are meant to be larger than others - when it affects
their health adversely, it’s time to lose the weight. Seems as though she’s doing the right thing.

  62. Teed | 14/08/08

I think it’s great she did Jenny Craig just to be healthier. There are a lot of big women out there who don’t want to lose their “curves” and don’t want to become extremely thin. So I think she really sent a positive message to all of them out there. If she doesn’t want to get into a normal BMI, that’s her decision. If we can all get a little healthier, that’d be great.

  63. oh please | 14/08/08

big woman who don’t want to lose their curves - they don’t want to stop eating Or they don’t feel like working out - thats a cop out saying i want to keep my curves, pleeease

  64. Tucker | 14/08/08

Aww, that sucks Jodi! Original Jodi, your name got jacked!

I always scan the comments for your name, as well as breads, Rian, timjones, and a few others. Keep up the wit.

As for Queen Latifah, I agree with above commenters; it’s more about eating normally (not perfectly, but not stuffing youself either) and being active.

I have had friends who are incredibly skinny but get winded going up stares since they are just naturally thin and never exercise. I’ve also known other people who look overweight but go running everyday. Weight and BMI don’t really tell you anything about people’s health, except at both extremes of the spectrum obviousely.

By the way have been able to comment for a long time, but I LOVE the new comment font and layout.

  65. untold | 14/08/08

PA is right the BMI chart is misleading. It doesn’t take into account muscle mass either. You can be “overweight” by bmi and still be healthy. I’ve seen pics of her exercising so she must work out and if she’s eating better then for all we know she is perfectly healthy. Not all overweight people have health problems, high cholesterol, heart problems, etc. skinny people who don’t eat well exercise are at risk for those things too.

i think she looks great and it’s sending a good message of self-acceptance. it’s better to have people come to terms with their size and be happy and healthy than to develop an eating disorder trying to be something they aren’t. after all genetics have a lot to do with body shape size and frame.

  66. untold | 14/08/08

sorry just had to give cheers to Simmy
it’s so true. you can be “skinny fat” and be at greater risk for heart disease and everything else bad if your body fat is too high. bmi means nothing in that instance.

my roommate and i are perfect examples. im 5′4 and my bmi says im overweight and my roommate is 5′6 and according to hers she is underweight. yet we both used to play soccer, i can out run her and lift more in weights. she never works out any more but doesn’t eat much and when she does it’s usually not healthy. and i try to cook healthy meals.
who cares how she looked in miami.
unless you actually know the results from her last physical no one can say if she is healthy or not. but it’s definitely possible to be bigger and healthy

  67. Beauty at its Finest | 14/08/08

She is an example of beauty at its absolute worst!
Disgraceful, she is lying to herself if she thinks she is comfortable here. Please even chunky doesn’t feel physically nice!

  68. Beauty at its Finest | 14/08/08

well at least thin and at risk is pretty - fat and at risk is gross there is no disputing that!!

  69. cotton | 14/08/08

realistic goal No more like Easy Goal.
she likely consumes so much that it would be easy to lose weight if she just started restricting to a normal amount of calories 1,500/day
she would likely be saving 1,500 cals per day whats that 3 pounds a week.
    whatever poor excuse!

  70. d | 14/08/08

You hate it when people say someone famous is too skinny? I hope you DO know that there IS such a thing as too skinny? Also, who is to say what’s great & what’s mediocre, YOU? That’s good for your body, maybe. As other people have said, if she’s happy & healthy, why should she lose any more weight, just because some intellectual people say “EEWW” when they see her pic? Again, there are plenty of skinny people who are very unhealthy. Being curvy IS better IF that’s your body type & you’re healthy otherwise, if not, then fine -whatever you body type is as long as you’re healthy, exercise & eat well. And by the way, curvy is not the same thing as fat or obese- there aren’t just two body types, fat/obese & skinny. Starving yourself for an unnaturally bony body isn’t exactly setting your expectations high, either. Unfortunately, there ARE many people who do starve themselves to be thin. I agree with your last part about portion control, exercise & healthy meals.

  71. Clarinda | 14/08/08

She looks beautiful and healthy in this picture; kudos to her for looking at it from a healthy perspective, rather than the vain perspective. Are all women meant to be size 0? The Queen has the right idea; she is healthy mentally and physically.

  72. And Your My Obsession I Love You to The Bone | 15/08/08

She obviously needs to lose 60 more pounds, there is no denying that.

  73. Get off the Pot | 15/08/08

Eeew…if only this many people would vote in America.

  74. Eww | 15/08/08

There is no excuse for this as there is no excuse for Chanel Iman. NO DIGNITY
(but if i had to pick from the two - Chanel)

  75. hdc0008 | 15/08/08

It’s a statistical fact that slightly overweight people live longer lives than people in the normal weight category. The life expectancy is shortest for obese people, then underweight, then normal weight, then overweight. I just got through taking a medical sociology class and this was something we learned. Also, how a person carries their weight/waist size is a better predictor of health than overall weight is. Apple shaped people are more at risk for heart disease as opposed to pear shaped people. And on a final note, Queen Latifah is a wealthy woman and socieconomic status is a better predictor of your health than anything, so she has that to her advantage.

  76. Petal | 15/08/08

I think Queen Latifah is a very good role model. She went with the Jenny Craig weight program to become “healthier”, not “thinner” or “smaller.” Now we see that she did get healthier; she lost some weight and brought down her cholesterol, and now she’s happier. I don’t see how it’s negative. :) I think it’s great that she promotes the idea of being happy with who you are, accepting your body even if it isn’t clinically the “right size.” Some people like her will never be small and tiny, but that’s fine, too. Good for her to have a good sense of mind. I love her. :3

Also, I think she looks a better at this lower weight.

  77. superiorANA | 15/08/08

This Fat thing is 30% overweight why isn’t she just prescribed some Didrex to help the situation.

  78. Hey Jodi~ | 15/08/08

The bird is adorable I hope you can save him!!

  79. mz | 15/08/08

It does not send an unhealthy message. Shes just saying that she wants to be healthy. And believe it or not you can be that with a bit of extra weight. She sounds healthy too. So whats the broblem?
I´d rather hear or read about something like her than some anorexic rich kid every freakin day. It´s inspiring.

  80. lazy | 15/08/08

Uhh a “bit of extra weight” your joking right- she is OBESE that is not just a bit of extra weight.

  83. chichi london | 15/08/08

BMI is not the be all and end all of healthy. There are bigger people who are very fit and healthy, I do belive some people are naturally larger framed. I think she looks well and don’t see the problem.

  84. Kringle | 15/08/08

Unfortunately when you reach a certain point, being “healthier” does in fact equate to being “thinner” or “smaller”.
If she’s eating smaller portions and losing 20 lbs, why stop? Keep eating healthy portions, be active, and see where your weight ends up. Shocker- it’ll probably be less.
I think it’s a brilliant campaign. “Spend all the money on food you could prepare yourself and not even lose weight! Hey, it’s about ‘health’.”

  85. Petal | 15/08/08

Bottom line, the condition of her body is her choice. If she’s happy with herself, that’s all that matters.

  86. Sophie | 15/08/08

I agree with the people who say that BMI is not a definite indicator of safe weight but a waist measurement of 80cm or more (for women) is risk factor for heart disease.

It’s fantastic that she has boosted her health by lowering her cholesterol but she could probably still lose some from her midsection to be healthier.

  87. meagain | 15/08/08

it’s killing me seeing all of you acting like since she doesn’t want to be a size 0, she’s fine like she is… can you not see how big she still is? congrats to her on losing her FIRTST 20, but that was really only a drop in the pond… i’d be just fine even if she ended up at say a size 12… that’s bigger than what i’d like to be… but atleast that would be more healthy.. this is the problem with alot of the obese people in america ( in my family, even) they know that they’ll never be “skinny” so why even start? why not just stay at a size 16-18… that’s sad. queen latifah is a big girl… she has large bones.. she’s probably very dense, ( & heavy) but there’s no reason to still have that much fat…. ignore the scale…… look at your stomach. it’s simple math… if she WERE eating healthy, she woudn’t still be this big… or atleast, she wouldn’t continue to be this big. apparently, she’s still consuming too many calories.. FACT. i hope that she can use those first twenty she lost, to see how much better she feels… and understand that she can again feel even that much better if she continues like she’s been doing. i hope that she will use that as a beginning not an end, so that she can inspire all of the overweight in this country not just to settle for healthIER, but for healthy… if not for their own sake.. their children’s and grandchildren’s..

Ugly at any weight. Why bother?

  90. Amanda | 15/08/08

She could stand to lose some more weight, but you people saying she could lose 100 pounds are ridiculous! Do you have any idea how sick and disgusting she would look at about 100 pounds? She’s 5′10″, she shouldn’t weigh less than 130! And I’d say that’s even a little low for how she’s built. Not everyone is built to weigh 100 fucken pounds.

  91. katy | 15/08/08

i agree with cotton she could easily lose more weight and she should she is gross like this plus if all she has done is minimized her portions why doesn’t she just carry on and lose more weight
I can’t imagine anyone actually being happy that fat she would feel loads better with herself if she just lost weight and if she doesn’t imo it’s just laziness; i’m sure nearly every doctor would tell her to lose weight, it’s been proven that people who have the lowest possible healthy bmi are healthiest

  92. Alexandra | 15/08/08

Though Latifah is still overweight, she is trying to send a message that you can be HAPPY no matter what size you are. If you notice stars who are bobble-head skinny are in just as much risk for cardiac failure and other diseases because they are starving themselves to death. It goes both ways. The BMI chart is truly misleading because it doesn’t take into account actual body fat percentage which is one of the best indicators of overall health. For instance my BMI says I’m overweight but I have played track for many years as a sprinter and have muscles to prove it. My body fat percentage is also 18% which is extremely healthy. Queen Latifah is beautiful, I thank her for sending a positive message about body image, get healthy and get smart. Not get skinny at all costs!

  93. Rhian | 15/08/08

the bmi is only really a guide and does not take body type into account - for example according the the bmi scale brad pitt is obese! he clearly isn’t, but because he has a high muscle percentage, he’s heavier.
however, that being said if you don’t have an athletic body and your bmi is over 25 then you more than likely need to lose weight - for health reasons such as high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes…etc.
so, in conclusion, no - you shouldn’t settle for being overweight - even if it’s just “a little” overweight. it’s still overweight and it’s still unhealthy.
i’m so tired of the whole fat=healthier than skinny thing.

  94. Jessica | 15/08/08

I think Petal put it best, “She went with the Jenny Craig weight program to become “healthier”, not “thinner” or “smaller.”” That’s exactly it! And in answer to the original post, Jenny Craig food is prepackaged, but you supplement with fresh produce, skim milk and other healthy foods. I think when Queen said “I just eat a little bit less,” she was referring to transitioning off the program, but keeping the Jenny portion sizes in mind.

As a nurse I will say that BMI is NOT the final word on whether you are healthy or not. I see people come to the hospital everyday who are QL size and they are as healthy as can be. It is a medical mystery to me, but she could have a healthy blood pressure, low cholesteral and a relatively healthy heart at her size. Could she be even HEALTHIER and even thinner? Sure, but she will never be the hollywood standard by any means. I think it is also important to note that she says she is happy with her size. So many of us who are AVERAGE size or SKINNY HATE the way we look and yoyo diet and starve to be a size we believe we will be happy with…when in reality…you will reach that size and think in your head….”If I could lose 5 more lbs I would be happier” MENTAL well being has A HUGE effect on your physical health. So if she is happy GREAT, if she is Healthy EXCELLENT, but do any of us know what her medical records show? NOT AT ALL! So, who are you to say she is unhealthy and should not be happy with her size?

  96. #1 | 15/08/08

BMI chart is one of the simplest, arbitrary systems for calculating health. And, it is just a starting point, not the end all be all.
Jenny Craig food is not flavorless. It is actually really, really good.
Also, QL lost about 10% of her body mass which reduces the risk greatly for all types of diseases.
She may or may not be in a healthy weight range, but it is getting healthier, feeling comfortable with where she is at, and being happy for who she is. And, just b/c she is no longer with JC it does not mean she will necessarily stop losing weight.
I think she is a breath of fresh air and a very beautiful person.

  97. nathalie | 15/08/08

she’s too big for my taste, but if she doesn’t mind, well thats’ good. i’ve been quite big for a couple of years and i thougt i didn’t mind, but now i’m slim & toned again i love it so much, that i can’t understand how i didn’t mind before. ergo, she don’t know what’s she’s missing probably…

  98. Lindsay | 15/08/08

Even losing 10% of your body weight is a huge improvement in health. I congradulate her on that.

However I find it hard that she is at a healthy weight yet. It is true she has a larger frame and can carry more weight but I think she could go a bit further still.

BMI is not the end all be all. Although I don’t think this is her case, people with a lot of muscle may technically weigh outside their BMI range but they are healthy because of the amount of muscle mass they have - they in fact have very little fat.

Does anyone know how tall QL is?

  99. Cheri | 15/08/08

Ok she is NOT at all sending an unhealty message. We’re not all meant to be pin-thin ok? She looks great; healthy and happy at her size. She seems to be in shape, prolly more in shape then some of those Hollywood waifs are. (Cocaine, coffee, and cigarettes are not what I would call a balanced diet.) Kudos to her for advocating healthy portion control.

  100. .02 | 15/08/08

sorry but this woman is just so fat! please no one said everyone has to be pin thin but jesus they do not have to be obese! yanno obese as in bigger then fat.
    does she have no pride!

  101. adipose disgust | 15/08/08

why are we all assuming she is a big girl UNDERNEATH all of the LAYERS OF ADIPOSE TISSUE how would we know she is covered with so much fat!
i mean she looks like a beached whale in miami!

  102. Thalia M | 15/08/08

It’s hard to know for sure whether she’s unhealthy or not. You hear so much conflicting information about how weight affects health. For years, we have been told being overweight was definitely bad, but just lately I have seen several articles that mentioned studies that showed that actually, being overweight, even significantly so (though not obese, I don’t think) may not be as bad as was previously thought.

On this extremely Ugly woman. I hate her Fat!
Rolly Poly needs to lose another 40% (80lbs.) to be normal.

  107. Clare | 16/08/08

She looks great how she is- it is how she looks and maybe a relaistic goal for Craigers, making Craig a diet for heavy people who want to be stocky and at least she is consistent. Besides, we need people like her so we can feel skinny

  108. Lexie | 16/08/08

Maybe she will lose more weight over a period of time. It’s really not healthy to lose a large amount of weight rapidly. I think it’s good because at least she began the process of taking care of herself, and that’s better than doing nothing at all. I think it would have sent a worse message if she lost like 80 lbs. in a year. If she is obese, it could be a long time until she gets in the normal range.

  109. bleh | 16/08/08

I really don’t think she looks like she weighs that much. I don’t know how tall she is, but I’d guess she was 160 +/- 15lbs depending on her height. Judging from these pictures, I doubt any doctor would label her “obese,” though I’m sure she would be healthier a little more toned.

  110. Heather | 16/08/08

Congrats to Queen Latifah! She looks fantastic and happy which is all that matters. If this is her happy weight. Let the woman be happy.

    Love, Peace, Joy and Abundance,
    Heather

  111. meagain | 16/08/08

rian… could you please post the pictures of her in miami… i know i’ve said this a hundred times already… but this picture just isn’t justifying how she actually looks… i’m not trying to mean to her or anything, i just think this picture is EXTREMELY misleading… she easily looks 50 lbs thinner than she is… the pictures were taken in the beggining of june i believe( around the same time she first started saying she reached her goal) please… and thank you…

  112. Sarah | 17/08/08

I don’t think anyone is trying to say “it’s OK to be unhealthy”, but everyone’s body is different and trying to lump everyone into one category based on BMI doesn’t work. I’m 5′7″ and feel my best weighing around 180 lbs. A lot of people can’t believe I weigh that much because my body shape is such that I look a lot thinner. I have a small upper body and larger hips/butt, so my doctor says that my waist measurement actually puts me into the optimal health category and I’m fine. Waist/hip ratio is much better for determining health, as well as getting monitored for cholesterol, iron, blood pressure, and kidney/liver function. Obesity is never good but your weight isn’t necessarily the determining factor of health.

  113. Duvessa | 17/08/08

She’s a big woman & I think it’s safe to say she always will be. I *am* suprised at how young she is though, because she seems a lot older to me.

  114. Jessica | 17/08/08

Nowhere did it say that her weight was healthy. And being a healthy weight and being healthy are two different things. All that’s stated here is that Queen Latifah has reached a weight where she is comfortable. And I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. If she’s happy at this new weight, then good for her. Whether or not you find it physically appealing, I don’t know why she’d care or why you’re so concerned. Believe or not, not everyone bases their self-worth on how they look or what the weigh. She is a wonderful role model. Her size shouldn’t take away from the fact that she’s a great person. There are enough celebrities starving & puking their brains out for your acceptance that you can focus on rather than to down someone who’s comfortable with who they are thin or not.

  115. MEGHAN | 18/08/08

Some of you people are so warped… Latifah is a six footer with a big bone structure. Some people prefer not to look like they never eat, like some of these ridiculous celebrities that show all of their ribs and every other bone in their bodies. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT ARE UNHEALTHY!!! They’re malnourished and sickly looking. Latifah, on the other hand, has maybe more weight than the stupid BMI chart says she should, but she’s HEALTHY. She has a flat tummy, which means she doesn’t have a clogged colon like a lot of you posting messages on here. She’s never going to be skinny, and I don’t think she should be. Not everyone thinks skinny is beautiful. And one thing’s for sure, everyone who is skinny is NOT beautiful (outside).

  116. MONIQUE | 18/08/08

I am so sick of people and their opinions gets on my dang nerves.Queen is a beautiful full figured women who is not fat she is thick! To all u judge mental a-holes who know nothing about height and what roll it plays when it comes to weight. Get a book out and read! She is tall and beautiful! She is a very healthy size and will never be a 2 or 5. Look at Paris Hilton, the Olsen twins, Nicole Richie(she just had a baby that god for that, it put some weight on her!) and Katie Holmes just to name a few. They look like Stick people my five year old draws. That is not healthy at all, when u can see bone threw skin…. U think that cute. Queen is a black woman and their is a big difference in the make up of black and white women. Bottom line Queen tall thick and beautiful she has the complete package and a great roll model for young women out their who are killing themselves trying to look look like a super model.SHE is living for her self and not for u and others like u who can formulate an opinion about someone u don’t know. Some of u are probably over weight and out of shape ur selves. And anyway she is super rich her size does not stop her money or fame so why does it matter what u simple minded people have to say!

  117. Lucy | 19/08/08

Stay on the plan Queen! You could lose a little more.

  118. MelodySoul | 19/08/08

I don’t think it’s an unhealthy message because from what I’ve seen of her she does care about her health, she exercises and she made the effort to drop some of her weight. Maybe it would be more medically ideal for her to lose another 20+ lbs but not everyone is going to fit into that ideal.

  119. Big Joke | 21/08/08

has anyone noticed that jenny craig doesnt fucking work! okay kirstie addis or wtvr her name is is fat again queen latifah looks the same. She thinks that just cos shes always been fat if she loses a bit of weight it makes all the difference, UM NO. If they want people to get on jenny craig they should have like um SKINNY people go on it. Or like photoshop pics of people like everyone else does. She looks like a pig and she probably eats all kinda of crap but no one ever notices because she hides it between her sweaty ass rolls
