Vanessa Hudgens: I Eat Whatever
April 30th, 2009 by Rian | Filed under Celebrity Exercise, Vanessa Hudgens, What Celebrities Eat.
High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens shared a few tiny tidbits about her diet and exercise routine in the May 2009 issue of Self Magazine:
On diet: “I eat whatever, just in tiny portions. Honestly, when I tried to diet and eat fewer carbs and eat more protein, I ended up gaining a few pounds. [...] My worst OD’ing weakness is hot Cheetos. One day, when I was sick in bed watching Lost, I ate a whole bag.”
On abs: “My secret to flat abs is pilates.”
On working out: “I like sitting in the front row of cycling class. I feel like everybody behind me is looking forward, and that pushes me to do my best. [...] I like to work out with friends. It gives you someone to look at and say, ‘I’m dying!’ to.”
It sounds like she has a reasonably healthy attitude towards food and exercise, IMHO… what do YOU all think?

She is a pretty girl, but not as pretty as her man. She is probably telling the truth on her diet. Small portions will keep you thin, and she isn’t overly skinny. She looks very healthy and has a great complexion.
I was so dissapointed when I got this mag. I thought there were going to be more pics of her, but the cover pic is pretty much all you get. What a waste of $5!! Anyway, I doubt she eats whatever she wants. That is bs! lol.
I ate whatever I wanted at that age too Honey!
i agree with Mel-there no way celebrities eat whatever they want unless they are still teenagers like Miley and their bodies haven’t caught up with them yet.
i’m waiting for a star to admit they can barely eat anything and how hard it is to say no to food sometimes-that would be more realistic than this crap.
I believe her; you can eat whatever as long as you keep it within 1500 calories or whatever amount you’re trying to stay at. And remember, this kid is just a kid! I could eat whatever even at 5000 cals a day and didn’t gain a pound!
I agree with Clare… She is still so young- she probably CAN eat just about anything without gaining any noticeable weight. Oh, and Marsha Cross has admitted that she is hungry constantly for those who want a confession
She’s smarter than I thought…she discovered that too much protein actually slows down the metabolism. I’ve always been really envious of Vanessa’s figure; it’s nice to hear that she doesn’t really seem to obsess over it.
In my teens I barely weighed 85-90 lbs. It wasn’t until the age of 32 that I went over 100lbs. I believe at this age and with working out, she eats what she wants….in tiny portions(her words) and can maintain her size. She is cute a girl but bores me….
She can eat whatever she wants but within the reasonable limits…That’s common sense and anybody who cared about their health and body would stick to common sense…However, for an extraordinary body one need genetics and so much sweat…Nothing comes easy!
I think she is telling the truth, she is not stick thin, still young and if you eat in moderation anybody can stay slim, common sense.
She’s very young…why are they even asking her these questions? It’s kind of ridiculous IMO. She’s young, higher metabolism and active…doesn’t take much more to be healthy at her age.
i buy it. tiny portions of whatever she wants, as she said, and exercise will do the trick. you’ve just got to find that sweet spot and maintain it; and, by the looks of things, she’s done just that.
I am almost 29 and just had a baby. I used to be 105 at 18 years of age when I gained a little weight at 21 I started dieting and actually gained weight. I quickly went up to 140lbs. I have finally learned that you CAN eat anything you want in moderation and stay thin. I no longer diet and stick to 1500 calories a day. I enjoy fast food and cookies occasionally and never feel deprived! I am 5′6″ and 117lbs. I think when you starve yourself then you binge and that is when you have issues!
i disagree with mel and claire. i eat whatever the hell i want, but i cannot eat with wild abandon. it’s like balancing a checkbook. maintaining your optimal weight is all about checks and balances. the only difference is, most of us don’t balance our diet account to see where we stand. i’ve got 4 kids all in their early 20’s and, for me, this system-coupled with moderate exercise-works regardless of my age.
She looks great! I find i can eat what i want too, within moderation as long as i excercise to make up for it. Nice to see a young star with a healthy attitude to body and weight!
I agree with crys…Vanessa is still young yet (20-yr)?? She still has (probably)a faster metabolism at her age…like you said, crys…Miley Cyrus & Vanessa are two younger gals who are still growing up. Vanessa is cute…and NOT stick thin so whatever she is doing, so far, it seems to be working for her.
As for a celebrity admitting to how difficult it is to keep their weight “down”…Marcia Cross (from Desperate Housewives) has openly admitted to going HUNGRY to keep her weight low. She’s said that she feels she is getting “paid” not to eat as much so she can be thin. HOWEVER, Marcia is like 45 now so her body metabolism is going to be slowing down a lot more…!
Ha I’m glad she she said this becuase I noticed it too! When I eat more protien and less carbs I GAIN! When under all other circumstances I can’t for the life of me- true I’m just 19 – but I’m very thin anyway and I always tell my friends not to obsess over protien becuase of that ha. Different bodies react to different things. She looks great and she’s not anorexic, bravo!
I totally believe her…she looks slim and very healthy and she’s young! I think she’s a good role model!
Love her! I believe her. I cant diet at all because I will gain weight too. I have the same body type as her and Im 21. And she looks healthy and not stick thin. More posts of her please!
@ ValerieSara, congratulation and i agree with you, age, sometimes, doesn’t matter, i see fat kids every day, younger then Vanessa.
She is very pretty and has a fantastic body, without being a stick. She seems to have a healthy attitude and I like that she is truthful about having to work to maintain her shape.
come back to me when you are 30 Vanessa, then we will see if you can still eat what you want.
sorry Clare! i meant to say i disagree with Mel and crys, not Mel and Clare.
She didn’t say that she stuffs her face, she said she eats what she wants in tiny portions. That’s what I do too. She didn’t strike me as someone who regularly works out though.
I think she’s being honest. She seems to have a healthy outlook, which is great. I’m sure she works out on a regular basis…not everyone who exercises is ripped.
weight wise she looks great
she has youth on her side
im inclined to believe her
i dont think age has anything to do with it. im 19 and if i ate a bag of chips [yuck!] you would probably see it on me in like a week unless i put in a extra couple of hours at the gym…its so not worth it.
I don’t think saying you eat “tiny portions” is a very healthy message to be sending out. What’s healthy about tiny portions? I’m assuming hers aren’t that tiny because she looks good. But eating junk in tiny portions isn’t healthy. And people can be anorexic and eat chocolate and fries. One m&m and one fry.
The secret to her body success is the fact that she’s like, 17. Almost everyone can eat what they want at that age. I sure did.
I think Vanessa looks good, but truthfully, I think she has an unhealthy attitude towards food and exercise. Eating “whatever” in tiny portions is hardly healthy (in my book). I hope she’s getting enough nutritious food (as well as calories). Also, she seems to dislike exercise. She needs to be pressured to do well in cycling class (by sitting in the front row), and needs friends around to commiserate. She seems to be miserable when she’s exercising. Healthy attitude towards food and exercise?? Sorry, not in my book.
She definitely seems to have a good head on her body. That does seem like a healthy attitude towards food and exercise. Plus she’s young, so it’s easier to keep in good shape. She definitely looks gorgeous on the cover.
Julianne Moore, Marcia Cross…some but very few actually have admitted to being hungry most of the time. Eh, I believe her (Vanessa). I mean it’s not like it’s Lindsay Lohan saying that she eats whatever she wants, now that would be bs.
Well, I think she’s young and can afford eating whatever she wants, but good for her for looking what she puts in her mouth. If she sticks to eating healthily and smartly as she supposedly does now, she won’t have a problem maintaining her figure.
Everything she said is very reasonable. I believe her.
You can’t gain weight if you eat in small portions! And a calorie is a calorie, whether it comes from a brownie or a salmon fillet — it’s just the nutritional value you get is different.
Agreed with a lot of the above: She still has an insanely fast metabolism. Working out and eating small portions sounds reasonable and truthful.
petal, not everyone is obsessed about nutrition and excercise (i know i cant spell). have a snicker bar every now and then and live a little!
She’s not super skinny, so what she says is probably true. Good for her.
this is complete b.s. one time she ate a “whole” bag of cheetohs what a huge deal… no ones ever done that before… really that’s complete crap
she’s not that skinny for someone who eats only tiny portions and bikes all the time she’s clearly not at all naturally like that and has to work super hard to stay normal… it’s pathetic anyone can eat only 1000 calories of straight junk and work out and stay thing
We’re around the same age. I think she’s lie-telling. Whatever though. Better to be a good role model than dish out diet tips.
I totally believe her. I am trying do the same thing and portion control really works perfect especially if you eat healthy food. It is just a bit hard to control it all the time.
probably true!! I did too before I had kids and turned the BIG 30… now I have to eat healthier and workout at least 4 days a week…
her zac is so much hotter than she is though!! WOW, I could not date a man who’s prettier than I am…
I know i have no concept of who she or her fella is outside of this website, but i can not see the appeal of zac effron one bit.
I read this article, she seems really down to earth. I have never seen HSM, but she seemed nice in the article at any rate
makes sense, I eat the same way she does. You really can eat whatever you want in small portions and be fine
i dont believe any of this. because i know myself haha
Zac Efron is prettier in the face then vanessa, why hasnt he dumped her yet.
she looks healthy and toned
she could be right, everyone loses weight in different ways.
my mum is thin and shes in her late 30’s, I will see her munching on a snickers bar during the day, but then she wont eat after 7pm, because she had chocolate .
you just got 2 moderate what you eat and youll be finee
How much do you think she weighs??
WOW HER FACE
is tottaly photoshopped here hellllll
“make me pretty”
-_-
zac efron <3
age has nothing to do with it..it doesnt matter how old you are i know friends who have to watch what they eat otherwise they gain quickly and im 19 the same age as her. it just depends on the person not their age. i dont particularly like her anyways..shes not a good actress.
It’s all about total calories.. sure I can eat a big bag of chips or whatever and not gain weight, but then I don’t eat much else the rest of the day..
petal’s comment is the most pathetic thing i’ve ever read here, hands down. as someone else suggested: live a little!
i agree with hanalogo, isnt the world getting fat from eating large portions…??? arent we encouraged to eat smaller ones? im not making any sense of petals post.
She’s extremely boring to me
Even though she is young and has metabolism on her side, I really doubt this girl goes out once a week and has a burger and fries like most people her age. Based on the “small portion” and exercise class comment. I would judge that she spends a fair amount of time and effort to get her body looking as it does. Ironically, I think more girls and women would be willing to do the work it takes to get in shape if stars would confess that they work hard at it. It’s this “Oh I don’t do anything special and just happen to look gorgeous!” line that makes girls give up before they start, because it seems too hard. Reminds of a gossip tidbit I had seen a few years back. Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and two other models were spotted in a club having a burger and fries…one burger, cut into fourths. Literally, the four women shared one entree-
Am I the only one who thinks she’s eating more? My body is around her size, I haven’t got the fastest metabolism but I’m pretty athletic and I respond well to exercise. I eat everything, in normal portions, sometimes when I haven’t eaten much in a day also big portions. It all depends on the daily intake of calories and really eating when you’re hungry and not starve yourself. I can eat a whole bag of chips if i reduce the rest of my daily intake to 800 cals. I think if she’d just eat – as she’s claiming – tiny portions and exercises that much, she’d be super super skinny! I mean Nicole Richie skinny.
No.. sanna, I doubt she’s eating more than that. Although she’s not anorexically thin, she IS thin. She must be eating a low calorie intake. You probably just have a really fast metabolism..
i believe her. i do the same thing, and it works. eating whatever you want in moderation is the best way to lose weight AND keep it off in my opinion. i love ice cream, but when i was losing weight i didn’t avoid it! i just ate it in a smaller portion and balanced it with something healthy. i still do that now and i’m easily maintaining my weight. i don’t count calories, but i’m pretty sure i stay within 1500-2500.. depending on my activity.. i just eat in moderation and i’m thin. eating 80% healthy foods and 20% treats is what i do. i always make sure i have a balance. so anyways, good for you vanessa!
I believe her, I was that way most of my life and thin as a rail, not bad now but I do have to watch what I eat after turning 35.
I agree with Petal. VH sounds obsessed with her weight and exercise – not a healthy attitude. Eat “tiny portions” and exercise until she feels she’s “dying” and that’s at 20? What will she do in 5-10 years? Develop a full-blown ED? She’s not a 40 year old mother of 3 with a high pressure full time office job trying to get in shape in short time period. This is where “tiny portions” and intense exercise would be a healthy attitude.
It’s quite surprising to see that there are people who see the way I do. Funny. I was thinking too that Vanessa is cute but not as pretty as Zac and thought I was in the minority. Just like I noticed in the archives a significant amount of people thought Gisele Bundchen’s face is not attractive to them. I had thought it was a crime for me to think that way about the top paying supermodel. Makes me think of a certain female in high school who was popular and supposedly praised for her good looks. She had a great body for sure like most of these celebrities but her face was “eh” in my opinion. Was I the only person to think that of her? To me, if you have a great body, it doesn’t make your face unnoticeable.
i dunno, if i was getting paid millions and millions of dollars to look good in front of a camera i think i would be “eating small portions” and “dying during exercise” too….
Considering her age I’m not surprised. She looks healthy and trim.
When I was her age when I eat whatever my body became whatever it want to be.. Fat and ugly.. I think what she meant she can eat all the junk food but only a teaspoon or tablespoon.. That’s the most she can take.. Its the same as having an eating disorder..
She’s young + looking good. I’m sure, she watches out what and how much to eat. But not as stubborn as some older skinny celebs…
