Kelly Clarkson Photoshopped Self Magazine Cover

August 10th, 2009 by Rian | Filed under Kelly Clarkson, Photoshopped Celebs.

There’s been a lot of talk over the September 2009 Self Magazine cover story image of Kelly Clarkson… Like all cover images, this one has been airbrushed/photoshopped:

SELF-kelly

However, the cover story is titled “Stay True To You And Everyone Else Will Love You, Too”. Which, given just how photoshopped the picture is, seems a bit hypocritical and/or ridiculous to many people.

What do you all think? Discuss your thoughts in the comments section!

Here’s a recent photo of Kelly to compare to the magazine image:

    Looks like a differant person!

  2. maddison | 10/08/09

We have to keep in mind magazine shoots are done months prior to them being sold on newsstands. Given that, I don’t think she was that small a few months ago. It’s too bad she didn’t put effort in staying that size. She looks like a case of medical problems these days.

  3. londoncalling | 10/08/09

The photoshopped picture should be an incentive for Kelly to lose weight, she would look great much slimmer.

  4. hihaters | 10/08/09

I don’t understand the point of photoshopping that much. What is wrong with putting the real person’s body on the magazine cover?

  5. Claire | 10/08/09

She seems like quite a sweet girl. She’s a big girl but you know, some people are just bigger than others, so what. She’s not a model, her personality and talent shines through in interviews and performances (if you like her music).

Personally, I think photoshopped pictures should be banned. I’ve no issue with a bit of airbrushing, but totally modifying the persons image to the point that there is no recognition to the original, it’s silly. We might as well be looking at a computer generated woman. Quite sad really, no?

  6. Jade | 10/08/09

    Yep, ridiculous.

  7. Amy | 10/08/09

Personally, this kind of thing makes me angry. It’s so hyprocritical.

  8. Obesity | 10/08/09

yea, this is definitely hypocritical. what else is there to say? magazines should have a limit..

theres another recent photoshop scandal too, dealing with twiggy- the model from the 60s-70s. its for some makeup or coverup, and its is just ridic. they have considered banning photoshopping in englad because of that picture.

  9. henna | 10/08/09

Veeery old pic, or just heavily brushed.
    Shame, shes a pretty girl…

  10. gatling | 10/08/09

    yup. deff old pic.

  11. Kimberly | 10/08/09

She has spoken out several times saying that she likes the way she looks. If she likes it who are we to judge?

  12. nnn | 10/08/09

Ha!!! They airbrushed a good 60lbs off of her.

  13. hihaters | 10/08/09

If she likes the way she looks why didn’t she make a deal with the editor that they would put her real body on the cover (or something close to it)? Why does everyone say how much they love themselves but no one will make sure their real image is used in publications?

  14. ElizabethJ | 10/08/09

I just decided not to buy SELF mag anymore. Look at all of the titles on this cover. They are exactly the opposite of what KC represents. She is proud of eating McDonalds, etc. That is fine if she says she likes how she looks but IF that is true she should tell mags not to photoshop her thin.

  15. summerlover | 10/08/09

Should be interesting. A couple months back they had to re-run the photo shoot pictures of Jenny McCarthy due to her commenting on how much air-brushing they had to do on her. They claim they don’t photo shop and all models/actress are their true selves. They usually photograph no more than 2-3 months out so this was recent. We’ll see.

  16. Yuck! | 10/08/09

It looks like they put her head on someone else’s body.

  17. Lux | 10/08/09

maybe it’s just me but even her face seems not to be hers… And the silky fabric of the top can only be pulled of by someone SLIM. So yeah, heavy photoshopping.

  18. Maria | 10/08/09

She was not that small a couple of months ago, she has been this weight for a while. Everyone knows that she is not that thin so why make a fool of yourself and put that on your magazine.

  19. Mer | 10/08/09

Well her real body would never fit on a magazine so they had to photoshop her!

Why put her in this magazine in the first place? I thought it was a health magazine?

  20. suz | 10/08/09

That’s also an unflattering airbrush job on her face.
I can’t wait for her to just write a memoir or something about all this stuff. Magazines always just print what they want.

  21. Nawa | 10/08/09

I don’t see why it’s a “shame” that Kelly doesn’t look like the airbrushed photo. I think she is absolutely gorgeous the way she is now, and her personality and talents outshine any girl who is famous just for her “skinniness.” (Not that I’m trying to bash on thin girls =])Point is, Kelly is making an awesome statement for all the young girls/women out there, and is showing how twisted our entertainment industry has become!

  22. Draccae | 10/08/09

Wow she looks 5 years younger and 30 pounds thinner.

  23. Duchess | 10/08/09

That is just ridiculous. Who are they trying to fool?
If I were her, I would feel like a total fraud. I wonder if she knew they intended to do it.
In reality, she looks uncomfortably heavy at the moment.

  24. sab | 10/08/09

this should be a motivation for her!
if she would juuussst shun the cookies she could look
    THAT good!

  25. Megan | 10/08/09

She was mad about how they airbrushed it.

  26. BAK | 10/08/09

This just pisses me off. That magazine lost all my respect, and its credibility. SO OBVIOUSLY photoshopped, there is no debate about it. If I were a celebrity like Kelly, who has continued saying how she loves her body and is comfortable with it, and has no problems with her weight gain, I would make sure the magazine I was working with would not change my body or appearance on the cover. Its all so hypocritical…. and infuriating.

  27. M* | 10/08/09

i actually emailed SHAPE MAGAZINE about their photshopping of jenny mccarthy— becasue they had stated that they do not photoshop their models.. and jenny admitted on OPRAH that she had been “photoshopped to hell and back” — well they emailed me back and apologized and admitted they PHOTOSHOP strech marks, freckles, and other scars on their models– not fat! it was just a bit weird— it was sort of like a half assed admission.

  28. Lux | 10/08/09

@nawa: I’m not sure verging on obesity is an awesome statement. I’m not into unhealthy skinniness, but this is not healthy either.

  29. Holly | 10/08/09

That is so photoshopped! Recently all of her media has been trying to hide her body. I don’t get it, if she’s fine with herself, then why can’t they just leave her alone?

  30. mareena | 10/08/09

they r tottaly sending a mixed message

  31. Mel | 10/08/09

WOW!! They trimmed off 50 lbs on the mag cover!! She should not be on the cover if that is not her real size, especially since it is in a health mag!

  32. Zuwee | 10/08/09

    Who cares…

  33. Malana | 10/08/09

    hahahahah @ Mer!

  34. suzanna | 10/08/09

i wonder how k.clarkson has to feel about this. she’s admitted to accepting her curves, but even then, it has to sting a little that a this issue of self magazine with a focus on loving one’s self does not accept her look. i hope she releases a statement on it. i don’t feel she needed the airbrushing. she’s a woman and she has a body. everyone’s body is different, and when we can stop pushing this image that skinnier is better or more attractive or healthier or more desirable, i think loving ourselves won’t need a magazine article dedicated to it.

  35. Megg | 10/08/09

Magazines shoot covershoots like this MONTHS in advance of the actual date they hit newstands. It seemed Kelly started gaining the weight over this summer and yes, I agree this photoshopped to some extent, but to be honest, you should consider the facts above before ripping on someone’s (recent and quick) weight gain.

  36. sanementalcase | 10/08/09

She looks gorgeous when she’s slim.
In the picture of her performing she looks gross!

  37. AnnieJ | 10/08/09

If you can’t put them on the cover without photoshopping, then don’t put them on or put them on as they truly appear.

  38. greentea | 10/08/09

let’s get real here, they photoshopped like 100 lbs off of hern at least

  39. moonbel | 10/08/09

SELF sucks for this. It is hypocritical.

  40. Annie | 10/08/09

I thought Self was a health and fitness magazine?! This is disappointing for many reasons. Kelly’s a cute but chunky girl. She is not, however, very healthing in her eating and fitness. Having said that, she claims to be happy with herself – which is great – but then why would you let them photoshop you to such an extreme! It’s just not necessary. She’s cute but a lil’ big. They could make her “a bit” slimmer but this is ridiculous!

  41. Annie | 10/08/09

SELF has stated that they airbrush but not photoshop since this pic came out. Either way, I’m contacting them. Shame on them.

  42. Beth | 10/08/09

ElizabethJ – How do you know she likes eating McDonalds? I’m chubby and I don’t eat fast food at all. In fact, I eat 1100 calories a day.

I wish I could be that crafty with photoshop.

    LOL

  43. Oksana | 10/08/09

LOL photoshop can really make you lose 70 lbs. I wish she really looked like on the cover.

  44. lulu | 10/08/09

the shirt doesn’t even look real to me anymore because it’s so photoshopped. it looks like they literally reworked it until it turned into a painting rather than a photo. and obviously considering the title of the article that’s beyond hypocritical.

  45. maria | 10/08/09

    it s ridiculus!so fake…

  46. Kayla | 10/08/09

Well, I know SELF has done some notorious photoshopping to make sure their covers look ‘fit’ but this is just hilarious. She looks like she did 3 years ago when she was ‘bulimic’! I like Kelly, but she has let herself go and anyone with a brain whose seen her recently knows that, so this cover image is just too funny.

  47. maria | 10/08/09

    they say “erase 8 pounds”…by photoshop?:P

  48. kt | 10/08/09

that is fucking terrible. i can’t believe they would send that to print when everyone knows how different she really looks. im never buying that magazine again.

  49. Persephone | 10/08/09

    I have no comment.

  50. Looki | 10/08/09

I think she is brave to perform even if she gained a lot,she is overweight,I hope she can lose weight, but no need to photoshop her

  51. whatsreallygoingon | 10/08/09

kelly could weigh 900 lbs and i’d still love her.

  52. abby | 10/08/09

i don’t even know why the magazines try to deny it… they photoshop EVERY SINGLE PART of EVERYONE in their magazines. maybe we should just accept that nobody looks normal in a magazine instead of accusing them and having them publish some bs statement about body confidence.

  53. kk | 10/08/09

i think there are serveral issues with this cover…. firstly just to re-iterate what a lot of people have already said self magazine should be ashamed for airbrushing abbbbbouuuuut 35 pounds off this girl at least…. i know the “arm on hip pose” makes your arms look slimmer but homegirl could wrap her arm around her body 8 times and it would never look that thin without some computerized weight loss… but i digress

the real issue is that kelly has a body and from what she says, a lifestyle far more similar to the average american woman than most celebrities… or more importantly the lifestyle that self magazine promotes… so kelly ovbiously prefers throwing back a few beers than throwing on a pair of $120 lulumon sweatpants ( which…. i mean the way self and shape pump those things you would think they make you lose 10 pounds instantly) and run for an hour. which is like-fine. its her choice. the problem is that if women who read shape and look like her started waking up in the morning happy with themselves and got that reaffirmed by looking at the REAL kelly clarkson on the cover of the magazine they would stop buying the magazine
    ……and so kelly gets airbrushed
( im sorry that was so rediculously long but it just like, infuriated me to see this cover… its such a bad message)

  54. kj | 10/08/09

I hate it when mags do that. But sadly, “fat” cover models don’t sell. Which is retarded, Clarkson is a great singer and performer, and while I do worry for her health at her present weight, it has nothing to do with her as a person or performer, she’s still great. I wish that fact that she is those thing would sell mags, but we live in a messed up society.
I hope she gets healthier for health sake, but I have always admired her for her real and beautifully curvy figure.

  55. GS | 10/08/09

Shame on you Shape!… is one thing to make an arm slimmer or a hair a bit fuller, but they photoshopped away like 50 pound, shame!

  56. ms_benes | 10/08/09

I think it should be against the law to photoshop anyone. I could understand if they were covering a zit, mosquito bite, bruise or some other skin imperfection. What they’re doing these days is a true injustice to the human form.

  57. Kim K | 10/08/09

I am thinking this has to be an early picture of Kelly on Self. Looking at her face, she looks young on the mag cover..the way a person does BEFORE they blow the hell up with a weight gain.

  58. Maxx05 | 10/08/09

Kelly looks like total cr@p right now, and would look better if she worked out and got to the point where she looked like the magazine cover. Take a hint, Kelly!

  59. Chris S. | 10/08/09

Fat chicks rock but Kelly is still just a light fatty. I’d still hit it.

  60. Sian | 10/08/09

I hate the whole concept of photoshop; I once saw on TV how they photoshopped the picture of a perfectly good looking model, before they put the picture on the cover, I think it was ELLE. And afterwards they’d changed the model’s cheekbones, her nose, – until she looked completely different. I just don’t get why they’d chose one girl and then make her look completely different. And if they do that to professional models I can only imagine how much digital altering goes on for a normal person.
And why do Shape and Self, etc. not just pick a model? It would save them a lot of work, and people who really buy those super boring mags probably wouln’t mind, anyway.

  61. K | 11/08/09

Wow. I cannot believe that Self had the gall to do that much photoshopping when she obviously looks about 60 pounds heavier in real life!

  62. christina | 11/08/09

All fashion magazines should be read with the intent of irony in the back of your mind.

  63. MM | 11/08/09

HAHAHAHHAHA, I laugh my ass off!

  64. kimmidoll | 11/08/09

ugh this is so silly – talk about mixed messages.

  65. JC | 11/08/09

It’s soOoooOo photoshopped that even the tatto on her right hand is gone!

  66. Daniellie | 11/08/09

Yeah, the “inspiration” of the story between the covers is a bit lost isn’t it? I don’t feel that she is very overweight though. In fact, I bet her BMI is good, just for looks sake she would want to lose 8-9 pounds.

  67. Charley_xx | 11/08/09

Id love to have my pic photoshopped so i could have that as an incentive to lose weight!

That said, i think the sheer irony of the stay true to yourself bit really annoys me. Its like just admit youve got fat?

The rest of us have to.

  68. italiangirl | 11/08/09

she’s obese and she must take care of her healthy, she’s only 20-25?

  69. sama | 11/08/09

what?! it’s like they’re telling big girls “kelly clarkson is happy with her body and you should be too, but as you can see she looks much better when she’s skinnier”.

  70. Badá | 11/08/09

Well looks like she’s not happy about how she looks.
Why would she permit they photoshop her that much, if she were confident and happy?
She is obviously fat and this is not a good example for her young fans.
If what they say in the magazine was true, Kelly should hit a gym and get into a dient right now.
Looks like she is about to die from a heart attack.
She is very very talented and cute, but I think it’s irresponsible to let herself go like that.
Instead of photoshop, maybe she could really get in shape for good, dieting and exercising.

  71. omg | 11/08/09

I think she is a beautiful girl, but clearly the cover is airbrushed or they have used an old photo of her. I think the magazine is full of crap especially using a heading “Stay True To You And Everyone Else Will Love You, Too”

  72. Celeste | 11/08/09

This is so sad, I used to love reading self magazine, it was a great inspiration for exercising (which i like, never do anymore) Such a shame on them!

  73. schuk | 11/08/09

    disturbing

  74. Sofia | 11/08/09

    what a joke

  75. reese | 11/08/09

THe crazy thing is I met her a couple years ago and in person she was sooo tiny, like not even just not fat, she was skinny very thin. Not sure why she let herself get so big….

  76. littlelady | 11/08/09

the amount of boobs she has in the photoshopped cover, she doesnt even have in the real pic below!

  77. hustler | 11/08/09

Thats someone elses body entirely with her face stuck on it.

  78. Natalie | 11/08/09

I’m a bit confused as to why people are ragging on Shape magazine when Self is clearly the publication in question, but whatever. I agree with the basic sentiment here–Kelly has no issue with how she looks (neither should we)–so it’s really irritating that they asked her to pose then shopped her within an inch of her life. Ugh, shame on you Self. I have a 3 year subscription that’s running out later this year…I won’t be renewing.

  79. Gaviota | 12/08/09

OMFG!! are you kidding me? they put her photoshopped head on someone else’s body… WTF??? really WTF??

  80. Gaviota | 12/08/09

wow, they put her head from a loooooooooooooooooong time ago on someone else’s body..

  81. Monica | 12/08/09

Hahaha… they really went overboard this time.

  82. Creepy Doll | 13/08/09

They forgot to photoshop her face

  83. Fabi | 21/08/09

Well Kelly does look fat and I don’t think this amount of fatness look good in a woman with her height because makes her look almost like a big ball sorry but it’s true
I don’t know if it’s healthy or not, it doesn’t look healthy
Kelly as far I know isn’t someone who cares a lot about her health, listen to her voice it’s strained and sometimes hoarse

  84. Melissa | 24/08/09

This magazine is naming Kelly the “most inspiring woman of 2009.” In the issue, she talks about her weight and her new tattoo which says: Love them anyway, as in love the people who hurt you anyways!
If you’ve seen any REALLY recent pictures of her, she has lost weight.
