Country music star Carrie Underwood shared some of her diet and fitness secrets in the December 21st issue of US Weekly Magazine. According to the article, the well-known vegetarian enjoys foods like soy-based sausage, Flatout tortilla pizza, Quorn nuggets and Kashi bars.
“It makes my job easier when I feel good about myself!” she told US.
Carrie also works out up to six days a week for 30 minutes on a treadmill or bike and does crunches on an exercise ball.
So, what do you all think of her diet? I found it a little odd that they didn’t mention fruit or vegetables!

Is it just me or should she have a better body if she worksout that much?
she’s blah
That is a horrible diet- just because it doesn’t have any meat does not mean it is healthy. That food is terribly over processed- It would do her good to eat real food.
She looks okay. I think she looks better with clothes on.
I agree KERBEAR. She looks good of course, but if I happened to follow her diet and exercise routine I’d shed weight fast. I eat “bad” stuff everyday and easily maintain my weight. She has to do so much more just to maintain hers and she’s only a couple years older.
@KERBEAR Hell yesss! She has no muscle tone, and she’s not that skinny! She also blabs about keeping a food diary or something. Just plain ordinary girl!
Agree with Kerbear. If she was that “good” I think she’d look better in a bikini. Those thighs look a bit flappy!
Carrie looks very good here (IMO). Whatever (exercise) she is doing…it seems to be working for her. I am thinking that she perhaps does other things (exercises) but not as her main-stay workouts on treadmill & exercise ball. I usually do swimming for 50 minutes/day about 4 to 5 times week & 1/2 hour on elliptical 2 times week & 45 minutes on cycling bike 3 or 4 times week.. (Been depressed lately & haven’t been faithful to my routines.) Have not been to my gym as frequently. On plus side, do about 1 hour with GILAD on FITT TV channel & do my bike for 1/2 hour & 100 crunches on stability ball here at home instead of going to gym. I just can barely get out of bed these days, however, hopefully, I’ll get past this bout (w/depression). Sorry everyone…didn’t mean to write a “woe is me” deal. Back to Carrie. She’s a vegan…does the vegan diet allow fruits & veggies??
Wait, regular exercise and lean proteins… so when did “common sense” start being regarded as “diet secrets”??
These magazines are all ridiculous.
I think she looks cute, though.
She looks OK, but i have to agree with the others she doesnt look like she works out that much!
i have to disagree with the above comments. she puts in the minimum into her workouts…30 min? that is what everyone should be doing everyday to maintain weight. being a vegetarian doesn’t equal skinny. many vegetarians eat more carbs to feel full instead of filling up on lean chicken and turkey full of protein. i am unimpressed with her body; i mean she looks good, nothing spectacular…and her diet/workout efforts are nothing worth really noting. she she lift weights as well to tone up.
*she should lift weights
I think her body is a reflection of her workouts. A 30 minute 3-4mile run 6 days a week is not a lot.
I think she’s beautiful!
Exercise 30 min a day is a pretty average workout for most people, so I wouldn’t say that’s a *lot* of exercise, enough to stay healthy and fit though. I exercise 30-45 min 3 days a week and she’s a bit smaller than me, so I think it sounds reasonable.
Also things like fake meat can be a bit calorie dense so she’s probably taking in a decent amount of calories. I’m vegetarian too but I’m a little weird about faux meat, it’s ok sometimes but it doesn’t seem healthy to eat it everyday…
Heeeey everyone, i have a novel idea! I have the best diet secret there is and that every celebrity should do! Ready for it? ……
its called working out, eating HEALTHY and in MODERATION
Oh my gosh!!! Like, best diet secret ever!!
Really though, I’m so sick of the “diet secrets” of the stars. Give me a freaking break.
I’m with MScotton. Those workouts won’t get you a killer body.
I agree…but lets face it she has a nice body. I think the issue is that her workouts are not paying off. Either she needs to mix it up and do some weights or resistance training on her own or she needs to get a trainer to show her what to do. She can afford it. I once followed a vegetarian diet. If you are not very careful you can “not eat meat” and still look flabby. She needs better attention to her protein sources. I think she knows this and this is why she focused on them during the interview.
Looks good. Very natural and pretty. Awesome legs!! I don’t think that she works out that much. Very normal. I work out at least twice as much and I’m not a famous singer;-)
well that IS alot of exercise, but realise it syas UPTO meaning the maxium. clever choice of wording.
anyway, she looks naturally slim, and actually rather untonned.
no idea who she was until i came on here, as usual
I think she looks great – pretty, natural, healthy
but i also agree that she looks better with clothes on. For some reason, I expected more
oh and Quorn products kick ass! Its about as processed as I get when it comes to (cooked) food.
i think a four mile run six times a week is a lot actually, but maybe that says more about me :O
doesn’t sound like she gets a balanced diet anyway so maybe that is why she doesn’t look super toned
I’m sure that these ‘diet and exercise secrets’ that she apparently talked about aren’t all she does. And I think she’s gorgeous. It’s not simply about looking perfect (whatever that means), it’s about being able to do fun things like hike and rock climb without passing out because you’re too unfit. Henny-I agree.
I think your body is ALOT to do with genetics, i mean i look similar to this and i work my arse off at the gym 5 times a week, eat healthy good foods, and still her thighs look better than mine
My slim friend however lives on sweets and junk food (albeit 2000cals worth), does no exercise whatsoever and looks amazingly toned, with visible body muscle and good proportions. How unfair?!!
just goes to show that being vegetarian doesnt mean healthy (especially when your “secret” is eating a bunch of processed crap)
For all of you saying running 6 days a week is not alot…… what do you do then and what do you look like? That is 24 miles per week and running tomes your whole body as well. She just is not photoshopped here and GOD forbid just don’t look PERFECT like ya’ll must!!!!
where are you people getting that she runs 4 miles daily?! 30 min doesn’t equal 4 miles unless she is running a 7 1/2 min mile. for all we know she could be running at a 10 min a mile pace. or even 12 min! not to mention she switches the treadmill with a bike. stationary bikes really don’t burn the calories like running on a treadmill does unless its super intense and fast for 30 min straight…
I love her- she’s got one amazing voice, a cute body, and she has managed to stay pretty humble and she seems like a real person with values and stays true to them. I admire her for that- for a young person in Hollywood it’s rare.
Henny quote: “I’m so sick of the “diet secrets” of the stars. Give me a freaking break.”
ROGER THAT.
I think her body naturally wants to be chubbier. Remember when she was on American Idol? She was a lot heavier then. I bet she has to work out a lot just to look like this; which isn’t bad, but I agree it’s not the look of someone who is food diary/workout obsessed like she always seems to be. I bet she’d be chunkier if she didn’t work out.
Come on people! It is a given she eats fruits and veggies – being a vegetarian, they are only mentioning her carb/protein diet base to sub meat. Based on her healthy looks and exercise regime, she eats a balanced diet – a healthy intake always includes colourful fruits and veggies. and as a busy musician, of course she has to eat quick snacks, and that is what the article mentions. i am a veghead myself so i know the soy-based meat subs (like yves) are quick and easy snack sometimes, not *all the time*.
Kashi bars are disgusting.
@Kianna: I totally know where you’re coming from, I go through bad spells like these during which I completely neglect my healthy food and exercise routine. I seriously hope you feel better soon!!!
um, am i the only one who thinks she looks good?
not like a major athlete, but good figure in a bathing suit. yes, her thighs have a little softness at the top but not cellulite or a bad shape or anything.
if i ran 3 miles 6 days a week i would look more toned or “skinny” than this (or so i’d like to think… but have never actually ran that consistently). but maybe its because i eat chicken and turkey as well as walnuts for protein. since im not a vegetarian, i dont crave a lot of carbs.
Mm. I love Kashi bars.
i think they were just examples of the foods she eats… im sure she does include fruits and vegetables in her diet.
and to whoever asked if the vegan diet allows fruits and vegetables, yes it does… vegan diets do not allow anything thats comes from an animal (basically anyway)
i agree with others here, the exercise isnt much.
What do I think of her diet? As a vegan (vegetarian for 16 years) I find it rather crappy, to be honest with you. Sounds like she’s living off highly processed, frozen, high-sodium foods. A true vegetarian won’t depend on “mock meats” to fill their diet. Try whole grains, legumes, veggies and fruits. Sure, the occasionl splurge is fine but soy based or other fake meats shouldn’t be the base of anyone’s diet.
And 30 minutes a day is great but it sounds rather low to me unless she’s doing some crazy high intensity workouts.
But hey, who am I to judge??
honestly, I think she looks great. Amazing legs, nice abs, I love her shoulders… I bet if she were more toned that everyone would say she was “too bulky”. Sometimes I think there is no pleasing this group
People, the reason why her body isn’t that impressive is exactly because all she does is cardio. Cardio will make you burn calories, but it doesn’t shape your body. If you don’t do cardio AND resistance training, you’re not going to have muscle. Cardio without resistance training burns muscle. It doesn’t surprise me that she doesn’t have much muscle tone. Look at picture of marathon runners – they are all skinny with ugly butts. Running will make you skinny, but it doesn’t reshape your body.
A girl here said that she spends so much time in the gym and her thighs still look bad. Your butt and thighs are not going to shape up if all you are doing is cardio. Exercises like squats and lunges build muscle in your glutes, and it gives you shapely butt and thighs.
Also, “light weight training for toning” doesn’t make a difference. It’s a waste of time. If you are a girl and lift heavier, you won’t get bulky. Women just don’t have enough testosterone to build as much muscle as men. The women that you see with HUGE muscles take anabolic steroids. Look at fitness models. They have good bodies from doing resistance training. Fitness models have FEMININE, muscular bodies whereas bodybuilder women have huge bulky bodies.
“Diet secrets” are a bunch of hogwosh. Just exercise and eat right.
She has a great body.
when you are vegetarian it’s relatively easy to stay slim-all those lovely veggies! but to maintain muscle tone you have to work on getting protein. That’s why she’s working on toning and eating processed protein products.
@lucylondon – that is a very true statement, and one not too many people seem to comprehend.
You people are ridiculous… who says that’s all she eats? Just because she eats a very few processed foods doesn’t mean her entire diet sucks. Plus she doesn’t seem to work out very much. It’s consistent but not intense. That will help you maintain weight, but not gain a lot of muscle or anything. and I think she looks awesome.
I agree with MolliV… 30min does not equal 4 miles… plus, as someone else says, she sometimes substitutes and uses a bike. Thirty min, however, is a good amount of exercise, though not a lot.
i am really suprised. this woman looks incredibly healthy and realistic. so is her exercise routine. it is exactly the amount of exercise needed to maintain cardivascular health. and her body is an excellent weight for her bone structure.
a killer body is reserved for those who have the time and focus on a killer body. this woman may put more time into her family (i don’t know whether she has kids or not), hobbies, etc. if health is her main concern, this woman is dead on. also, she is well below the national average.
I think her legs look awesome. What she seems to be lacking overall is more muscle-tone. From what she says, she doesn’t lift weights. A little toning goes a long way.
Overall she looks really great. Her midsection needs some toning otherwise she’ a cutie.
If she runs 3.5 mi in that 30 minutes she is only burning aprox 350 calories. So she can lose a half a pound a week if she doesn’t eat anymore than she normally does without the workout.
But it seems like she is running for fitness and a healthy heart, I’m sure to look more fit as well.
She looks normal for her workouts.
The food’s she’s eating sounds something like organic junk food.. all the foods named for examples had somethin to do with an overprocessed food dish like sausage, pizza, nuggets. She looks healthy though.
I think she looks good. She looks thin and healthy.
and Kianna your workouts sound exhausting the swimming… I’m not much of a swimmer!
I hope you start feeling better =)
okay there is no secret!! Stars have bodies just like everyone else. They stay skinny by eating healthy and exercising.
I think Carrie looks young and healthy. Finally im glad to see a girl who is healhty and beautiful and not stick thin. This is NOT AVERAGE. The “average” american woman is like a size 14/16, i doubt carrie is bigger than a 2/4.
I’d be quite pissed if I exercised that much and looked like this. She’s slim, just not very toned.
…because fruit and veggies is lame…of course she eats them too
I think she has a nice figure although it seems she sucks her tummy in.
Sounds about like my diet and exercise program…and for me anyway, sure there are fruits and veggies but not anymore than any other normal people or non-vegetarians eat. Most people just kind of eat a variety of stuff. She looks fit and healthy.
Everyone is saying she should look better for how much she exercises, but she looks great for what she is doing. About 30 minutes of CARDIO work-outs, and she’s slim, healthy, flat stomach, thin arms and calves, but her thighs are curvy *not that I find that wrong.
Her work outs is working her where they should be the most, her stomach and legs. If you guys are expecting her to be more toned, she would be doing strength resistance exercises and body toning ones, or she would have to do high-intensity work outs (sprinting). She’s only doing cardio and it reflects on her body.
I do 35 minute med-intensity cardio 4-6 times a week and have hit a maintaining weight at 121 at 5′ 4″ for the past year. My thighs and calves are thick because it’s in my genetics, her thighs might be as well. My arms and stomach are soft, there’s not much muscle there because I don’t do high intensity nor do I do body building or strength resisting exercises.
It’s a cute body, not perfection (who needs that), but I still say most women her age would love to have it.
she looks like she works out as much as she says she does…i agree with you guys that posted this. 30 minutes isn’t a long time and it’s not grueling (at least…it shouldn’t be). It’s not like she said she swims and kickboxes AND runs on the treadmill daily…i’d expect her to have some serious muscle definition then. Overall, I think she looks really good! She’s small, not fluffy looking, just right imho.
skinny fat
nice legs but chub stomach
she needs to do some weight training!!
how come everyone liked her body on the original post.
but then when she put out her diet secrets she is getting bashed to death.
i dont think thats what her diet really is.
but i think we all did expect her to look better in a bathing suit. she looks good though.
She looks fine just clearly doesn’t work out too much. And her diet seems way too processed as others mentioned.
Completely 100% normal looking girl. Nothing great, but not bad either. I’d say given her “workout”….her body looks to be right. I bet if she’d add some weight training, she’d tone up a little. Very average and obtainable body.
Wow, this is a hard crowd to please. You’re either too big or too thin, too muscular or not toned enough. IMO, with her diet and her excercise routine this is exactly how Mother Nature intended her to look. It’s posing yourself unobtainable standards that makes most of us feel unhappy and unfulfilled. Kudo’s to her for trying to look her best and being pleased with the results of her efforts. To me, that is inspirational.
well i run 25 – 30 miles a week and i would love to look like her. I also just got diagnosed with hypothyroidism, so hopefully the thyroid medicine will help change all that.
i always thought she is super thin but these bikini photos changed my mind.
she looks pretty average.
pretty girl tho
I’m glad that the items described in her diet mostly sounded vegan-friendly, but they also mostly sound like a bunch of processed crap, nothing alive. I agree, Rian, what about fruits and vegetables! And what about the importance of organic? Genetically modified soy isolate = not good! As far as her body goes, thinness does not always reflect healthiness.
@ MICKEY VON DUTCH: i couldnt have said it better!
Just for the record, Quorn nuggets aren’t soy based – they’re a fungus based protein. And not one thing on that list is anymore processed than a diet soda. If thats all she eats, no, its not healthy or well balanced, but I doubt her diet is limited to four products. =P
Yes, a healthy vegetarian diet gets most of its protein from legumes and such, but lets be honest: they get pretty boring after awhile. Particularly if you grew up eating meat, fake-meat products can be extremely satisfying (there’s no shame in missing the flavor and texture of meat after going vegetarian), make cooking much easier and aren’t any worse for you than any other genetically modified and/or processed food – from diet soda, to “whole grain” cereal.
Eating mock meat – even if she does it often – has no bearing on whether or not she is a “true” vegetarian. No meat products (including fish) = vegetarian. Period. Diets within those stipulations are as varied from good to bad as meatatarian diets.
Last but not least, she might not look like a Victoria’s Secret model, but she looks great! Beautiful girl, and I love that she doesn’t have implants.
I think she looks really good. She could be a little more toned, but it’s nice to see a softer more natural body for a change. As for her workouts they don’t sound that intense to me either, seems about right for the way her body looks.
