Okay let me try this a second time without my cat stepping on the keyboard.
I think the book was very well written, I could definitely relate to it. I think she is lovely and I did watch her on Alley. I just hope that she truly is happy now.
Ps I think she looks great.
I love Portia, and she looks great here – the hairdo looks cute on her.
she looks really good. She’d look even better if she had dressed age-appropriate.
Something is ruining the look..maybe the boots?
the tshirt maybe? maybe its the hair? What do you guys think?
She almost looks like Paris Hilton in some of these!
Her story makes me think if she’s vegan only to maintain a low weight. She looks healthy tho.
o portia..no ma’am on the outfit.. but i will always love her because of Arrested Development. so gorgeous on that show.
@ Marty: I think that it’s the hair, t-shirt, skirt, boots, lack of make-up.
She’s very thin. On ‘Oprah’, she said that she doesn’t diet and doesn’t exercise (but does live an “active life”).
It’s def the skirt
She looks great and healthy here. So inspiring to see women that are since recovered from an ED. I’ve def seen her dressed better. Her character on Aressted D is hilarious…
She looks happy but shouldn’t have dyed her eyebrows blonde. They look yellow.
her writing this book would be like kelly osbourne writing a book about how she used to be overweight…yes, shes no longer fat but still overweight…as is portia still underweight. i think the book is a publicity stunt, personally.
Why do former anorexics always look a little anorexic even after they’ve recovered? Maybe their metabolism is permanently faster or smthg. I had a friend who was anorexic and after she recovered she never could gain weight because of stomach pain.
Could she seriously be any more adorable?
she does look a bit like Paris here…i used to find her very sexy and attractive, but since she “came out” she seems to have played down her beauty…she’s barely recognizable from her Ali Mc days, and NO, not when she was anorexic, but before when she was a healthy weight she looked stunning, now she looks very average…she ditched the make up and super blond hair…her whole style has changed, and not for the better since she came out….
I like her, a lot, and I remember watching her wither away as it happened and thought “is no one else seeing this?!” mind you, i was like 12 at the time. but, i am glad she is happy and can’t wait to read the book:
that being said, i think she has a defined style, but something about her outfits always seem wrong! either they are boring, or something doesn’t belong, or its not accessorized correctly – frustrating – fire your stylist and get a better one
I don’t like the t-shirt but I still think she looks really well. Anyone know her height/weight now?
She looks good. Also, she seems happy. Good for her.
I think she looks awesome!!!!
Horrible outfit, nothing matches. and the hair is god awful! on an unrelated note, I want to read her book!
ok this is my 1st time ever commenting and I have to say “OMG!! Such Negativity from people!” She looks lovely and can tell she is having fun. Good job & good luck Portia!
@connieculkins: unfortunately, It’s usually the opposite- you can ruin your metabolism by being anorexic. Your body goes into starvation mode and wants to hold on to every calorie you consume once you start eating. That’s what happened to me, and that’s generally why starving yourself for weight loss is a bad idea. I imagine what others are saying is right- she probably has a very strict vegan diet. I think a lot of people w/ eating disorders can recover to a point, but will always struggle w/ body image issues. Especially in Hollywood!
Oh, and I think she looks really cute. As a woman approaching 40, I think it’s okay to say “screw ‘age appropriate’”- at least sometimes!
The outfit and hairdo doesn’t look age appropriate. It looks like she’s headed out to a garage band gathering.
I like her a lot though. I would like to read her book soon.
I’m kind of excited to read her book, but I don’t think anything could come close to Marya Hornbacher’s Wasted.
She’s gorgeous and looks to be a healthy weight. Ellen’s style is rubbing off on her, what with the blazer and the hair.
I loved her book. It felt…honest, I guess. She has a very rational perspective on what happened and why. If she’s as self-aware as the book makes her seem, I don’t think her veganism is her eating disorder in sheep’s clothing.
i think she is a beautiful and charming person. i never met her but i’ve followed her for a long time … and she seems very genuine and sweet. i’m glad she is balanced these days. and i don’t think there is anything wrong with a little punk rock if you have the edge to pull it off. and she certainly can! okay i might be biased, i just <3 her so much.
‘i never met her but i’ve followed her for a long time’
haha not in a stalker way. i mean in the media.
@jaccattack: i don’t think this book is a publicity stunt at all! have you even read the book? i thought it was wonderful. let’s not forget that she was a thin girl to begin with. she initially gained weight (becoming overweight) after her horrendous bought with anorexia and bulimia because the body naturally does that after prolonged starvation. she has just returned back to what is normal for her frame… she looks fabulous. veganism is also not a eating disorder, it’s a way of life. she has expressed her love for animals, and it’s clearly not because she’s trying to diet. to everyone criticizing her/her book…at least read it first!!!
she´s so sweet..ellen´s one lucky lady!!
@connieculkins she probably still looks anorexic because of Hollywood. Anorexia in no way speeds up your metabolism.
I can’t wait to read her book.
Bad everything. I’m getting really sick of that hairstyle, pompadore or whatever it’s called.
I don’t understand how some of you are saying she’s still too skinny or anorexic. I think she’s at her ideal weight for her height. I’d say about 5′7 and 130lbs.
^^ are you kiddi’ ?! – I def. think she looks her BEST!
I really like her but the hair and outfit are a NO GO!!!
Those brows are an awful color. She usually looks gorgeous, not the case here…The outfit would have looked much better with jeans and not a Christmas tree skirt.
How unfortunate…who’s her stylist? Or does she not have one. Am a fan of hers, but this look is a disaster.
the skirt is hidious if she wore a pair of skinnies, and a pair of nice heels she would look amazing.
@Darling 24: I agree…so adorable…Love her!!!!
I think the outfit is adorable!! Not a big fan of the pouf in the hair, though…
Wonderful comedic actress! She really has looked great (healthy, happy) since she and Ellen got together. However, that hairstyle/outfit is what I’d expect to see on Ashley Tisdale or some such. Not age appropriate at all.
I think she looks gorgeous, but the hair is too yellow for her skin. I liked it better when it was more ashy.
Nice body, but terrible outfit!!!
I think she’s definitely at a healthy weight now, look at her legs they’re quite shapely. But those eyebrows are horrible, I agree.
Oh, I just love her, but I’m not digging the outfit at ALL. I have not read the book, but I plan too. I love her huge love and compassion for animals. I’m sure she stays trim by excercise and practicing a vegan diet. I am vegan and am able to eat a ton, but maintain a nice low weight. There are so many fabulous vegan recipes out there, I highly recommend anyone to give it a try!
I really want to believe she’s healthy, but she does look on the skinny side to me. But maybe she’s just naturally that size…She does speak very convincingly about having fully recovered, so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.
I wouldn’t say she’s 5′7″ and 130lbs. I know exactly what that looks like and I’d say she’s 123-125-ish but can’t tell for sure because her hips/buttt are hidden by a pleated skirt and the blazer.
To the previous comments re: Portia looking thin even though she’s recovered…I don’t think you ever fully recover. EDs have like, the lowest successful recovery rates in terms of stats. She’ll probably be recoverING for the rest of her life.
Hard to FULLY shake something like an ED.
I loved her memoir. It was heart wrenching and honest. She can wear whatever she wants and its fine with me. Even if it is hideous.
cuuuuuuute. she looks great!

“Why do former anorexics always look a little anorexic even after they’ve recovered? Maybe their metabolism is permanently faster or smthg. I had a friend who was anorexic and after she recovered she never could gain weight because of stomach pain.”
Probably because they still have an eating disorder. She may not be”anorexic” but i think, as many “recovered” anorexics do, they still struggle with eating disorders. As for your friend with “stomache pain” its amazing the lies that people with eating disorders can make up to convince themselves and others of problems that dont really exists. And i say this from experience.
Portia is still very slim, she may not starve herself, but as a vegan she is still clearly, and quite significantly, restricting her intake.
@connieculkins.. the reason they have a hard time gaining weight back is because of the lack of food and perging overtime, their intestinal lining has been thru truama and has a hard time absorbing nutrients so food just kinda goes right thru them. I mean, after time with good nutrition/ supplementation, you can make your cells more pliable, but until then… your body keeps purging on it’s own.
@ morticia
She has definitely toned down her look since she came out. It makes sense since she doesn’t have to “play it up” for a male audience anymore. I personally don’t blame her. That industry is cutthroat, and just prays on women who already have a proclivity toward compromised self-esteem. I’m really glad that she seems to have pulled through.
There is one thing, however. This probably hypocritizes (is that a word?) the above comment, but….
A little bit of makeup would is not a bad thing.
*preys*
i think she looks fantastic!
@Netha I totally agree, that book was an amazing read.
I think she looks good here weight wise, slim, I don’t like the outfit, if she teemed the tee and blazer with skinnies she would look far more age appropriate! Love her anyway!
What on earth is she wearing??
Like Portia’s plaid skirt & blazer…but the tee shirt is a “no go”! Her hairstyle is okay but would NOT want to see her wear it this way all the time. Think that Portia looks really healthy & at a good weight here. I’d say 5′7″ & maybe 125 to 130 lbs?
Love her book! I can totally relate to her “rigid restrictions” & exercise regiments! I can hardly believe that her life & mine were almost the same (not at the same time, though)! It did NOT trigger me but did remind me how much my E.D. controlled me/my life. Did not leave any place for “socializing” b/c you “don’t eat” in private & all of that. Didn’t have Portia’s issues w/bulimia but the ana part was so parallel!! Think Portia looks really cute here (would look better with skinnies)..but it’s cold in NYC so I’ll let her “pass” on the outfit. She’s dressing to stay warm!
Portia looks cute and healthy. Minus the t shirt and skirt. I commend her for speaking on her eating disorder. It’s a lifelong battle.
She’s 37 and if you can’t wear a mini skirt with thick tights in the winter at her age then there’s something wrong with your thinking!!!
I think she looks better now but still awfully thin.
And for her to be a vegan as a recovering anorexia sufferer is the worst thing she can do.
I am glad she is doing so much better than they days she wrote about in the book!
Rian, could we get some Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon or some Kristin Davis please! (Where have they all been?)
Her ’style’ looks contrived. The hair belongs on the runway, not real life.
@ERK and others — Actually, people who have had EDs in the past sometimes will end up with faster metabolisms because they become hypermetabolic during refeeding (to repair organ damage and such) and their bodies never quite settle back down.
Also, Portia is an intuitive eater, and many people who eat according to their hunger/fullness cues and honour their cravings end up at low-but-healthy (for them) weights. Proof that you can listen to your body and still be thin!
Love love LOVE her!!! Loved her book, love her hair, love her outfit, LOVE IT! She looks fantastic!
just watching Arrested Development at the moment. she looks nicer with darker eyebrows – they define her face. however, it isnt that big a deal.
You know what–I think I figured out this outfit…well possibly. It’s almost like she’s merging a little bit of Ellen’s style (whether she knows it or not) with this attempt still be girly and a little bit “edgy”. I know Ellen does a lot of blazers/jackets over T-shirts, and I also know that the more you hang out with someone, the more their style influences your own–at least most of the time.
Anyways, I totally want to read her book! I agree about the whole vegan thing though, being a way to hold on to her eating disorder. My strict vegetarianism started not soon before my eating disorder developed, and my choice to become vegan I’m sure has something to do with me holding on to my eating disorder a little bit, not totally ready to give it up. I certainly am concerned about animal rights and where our food actually comes from, as I’m sure Portia is too, but I’m sure there’s part of her that chose to be vegan because of the eating disorder.
It’s not true that having anorexia will speed up your metabolism. Well, maybe it can happen for some people, but I think for the majority, it slows it down, although it may settle and return to its premorbid rate.
@Cocottenubs – while it’s true most people don’t fully recover from an ED, it is possible. My boyfriend had severe anorexia for several years and he is COMPLETELY recovered now. It wouldn’t even occur to him to worry about food. I also know two girls with the same experience. I’m not saying Portia’s fully recovered, though…maybe, maybe not.
I’m almost done reading this book, its amazing. I think im one of the biggest arrested development fans out there and she is a truly talented actress. Aside from that I really hope that she is recovered, shes is both a inspiration to me as a person suffering from a eating disorder and also a lesbian.
I have read the book 3 times already and really commend her for being brave enough to share her struggles with everyone. I’m so glad that she has someone in her life now that she truly loves and in turn loves her too. I think her and Ellen are a match made in heaven!
As for the comments regarding her clothing-who cares. She is showing her own individual flare.
ummmm i thought that was paris hilton with a genuine, humble , and pretty smile. oops. I love portia..i don’t like her hair or getup it is too disney channel……I think she should have chosen the hair or the outfit not both. Her figure looks cute and i like her much more than paris!
Yet another memoir about anorexia.
I loved the book, it was very well written.
But most of all, I love her, she is such a cutie pie.
halfway through the book. it is really good, but heartbreaking to see into someone’s soul like that. and their mind. wow.
and she looks great. she is not underweight. look at her legs, she is definitely healthy.
My life has been such a parallel of Portia’s. I’m glad I can look up to her in this industry.
