FAQ
Here are some answers to many of the questions I receive frequently either via email or in the comments section.
Q: Who are you?
A: Just a random 30-year old gal!
Q: What do you truly think is better - to be overweight, or underweight?
A: I am not a dietitian, doctor or nutritionist, so I will have to plead the fifth on this one.
Q: Is this a pro-ana website?
A: No! Do you see any tips or tricks on here, or a manifesto to “ana” or anything like that? I mean, seriously! If you really want to visit a pro-ana site, search google. You’ll find plenty of ‘em. While you are at it, you should look up the definition of “pro ana”. This website clearly does not fit the criteria.
Q: If this isn’t a pro-ana website, why are there so many pro-ana comments?
A: I delete any and all pro-ana comments that I see. Believe it or not, there aren’t that many that come through. I consider pro ana comments to mean comments that are glorifying anorexia (or other eating disorders) or that talk about purging, etc. Keep in mind that just because someone comments that a particular celebrity is fat when they clearly aren’t doesn’t mean it’s a pro-ana comment. It only means that the person perceives “fat” differently than you do.
Q: What do you think about the whole “fat acceptance” thing?
A: It’s not healthy. It’s basically telling people it’s OK to be morbidly obese when in reality, that isn’t OK. It’s unhealthy and dangerous. (But keep in mind that I’m not a doctor or dietitian, so I could be wrong).
Q: Why is my comment going to moderation?
A: Because I don’t like you. No, just kidding.
Actually, this website receives a LOT of spam - most of which doesn’t ever get seen by anyone other than me. Unfortunately I have a mile-long list of words, IP addresses, email addresses, etc that are automatically filtered. Which means they go into the moderation queue. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but it’s necessary unless you guys want to see a million viagra, cialis and auto insurance ads in the comments section! I try to check the moderation page several times a day, but occasionally I’m away from the computer and it takes a little longer to get comments approved.
Q: Why was my comment deleted?
A: This question has been asked WAY too often. I’m going to keep it short, simple and sweet (instead of ranting and raving like I’d like to): How about this: pay my web hosting bill for me - (and trust me, you don’t want to, as it is several hundred dollars per month) - then YOU can deem which comments are worthy or unworthy to appear on the site. Right now, I’m paying the bill, and I prefer to keep the comments section free of spam, pro-ed comments, rude and abusive statements towards me and other posters, etc. Please note that links are also no longer allowed in comments due to spam. I’m going to be frank with you: as with all other sites, it is up to the site owner as to which comments they prefer to have posted. Period.
Q: Do you hate celebrities? Is that why you did this website?
A: Not at all. I feel many celebrities are very talented in various areas. They keep the world interesting. However, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to point out when they have gained or lost weight or talk about their diet and/or exercise plans.
Q: Do you have an eating disorder? Is that why you are doing this website?
A: I have never been diagnosed with one.
Q: Are you crazy?
A: Probably.
Q: Does it make you feel better about yourself to talk and/or make fun of celebrity weight?
A: Nope - that’s not why I do this site. And I don’t feel as though I make fun of anyone seriously. Reading about celebrity diets and exercise has always been a fascination of mine. And just seeing how thin some of them get is interesting. Seriously - it’s simply a hobby of mine that I managed to translate into a popular website.
Q: How many visitors does this website get every day? Is it popular?
A: On weekdays, this website receives between 70,000 and 100,000 visitors per day - and has gone as high as 270,000 people in one day. Currently the average is 85,000 people or so per day. And yes, that definitely translates into being a very popular site.
Q: Do you condone people who obsess about their weight? Do you do it?
A: It doesn’t matter if I condone it or not - it’s gonna happen regardless. And yes, I obsess about my weight.
Q: What do you think about the whole Pro-ED community?
A: “Live and let live” has always been my motto. So, do it if you want. I’m not going to judge you.
Q: Are you pro-ana?
A: No. I do not in any way want an eating disorder and sincerely hope I don’t already have one. I think if people are dieting, they should call it a diet. There is no need to hope for an eating disorder when all they do is ruin lives.
Q: Will you show pictures of yourself here so we can see what you look like?
A: Photos of me from four years ago (and older) are scattered across the internet. After all, this wasn’t my first well-known website… I am also the owner of ChickLitBooks.com (which was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal & USA Today back in 2005) and several others. I will not be posting pictures of myself here anytime soon. I’m not a celebrity, after all.
Q: I visit your website and it makes me feel bad about myself. What should I do?
A: Don’t visit it anymore and seek counseling!
